In brief

You can ski from Tokyo by Shinkansen at GALA Yuzawa, Naeba, Kagura, Nozawa Onsen, Shiga Kōgen, Hakuba and Myōkō, and each has an onsen nearby. GALA Yuzawa is 71 minutes away with a station inside the resort (day ticket ¥8,000). Nozawa Onsen is Iiyama (about 1h 40m) plus a 25 minute bus (¥7,800). Hakuba and Shiga Kōgen are Nagano (1h 20m) plus a 70 minute bus. Myōkō is Jōetsu-Myōkō, about 2h. Most resorts open between 5 December (Shiga Kōgen) and 19 December (Nozawa, GALA Yuzawa); Goryu runs one lift area from 21 November and Kagura opens on 28 November. West of Nagano, the Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui hills are small, cheap and depend on snow.

Why ski in Hokuriku

I live in Hokuriku, and winter here means skiing plus seafood. Cold air off the Sea of Japan drops its snow on the mountains behind the coast: Nozawa Onsen averages 366 cm of snowfall in January (1991–2020, village station at 576 m) and Myōkō reports up to 13 m a season. The Hokuriku Shinkansen then puts those mountains 1h 20m to 2h from Tokyo, and the same line carries on to Kanazawa, where Kansai joins it at Tsuruga. After the slopes there is a bath in the village and, from 6 November to 20 March, snow crab.

Niigata is part of Hokuriku. The Hokuriku Shinkansen runs through Niigata Prefecture and stops at Jōetsu-Myōkō and Itoigawa, so Myōkō is on the line. See the Niigata guide. Echigo-Yuzawa, GALA Yuzawa, Naeba and Kagura are also in Niigata, but on the Jōetsu Shinkansen, a separate branch from Takasaki. It is not on the Arch Pass, and the JR East Pass covers it. I include them because they are the quickest snow from Tokyo.

This is not Hokkaido. The big terrain is in Nagano and Niigata, and the hills in Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui are small: IOX-Arosa in Toyama ran only from 3 January to 8 March last winter. Where a resort had not published 2026–27 prices by 14 October, I give last winter's figure and mark it. Below: a table of the ski areas, the season month by month, each area with places to stay, how to get there and which pass covers what.

Prices are adult day tickets (13 or 15 and over, depending on the resort), tax included. 2026–27 figures were read on 14 October 2026; "last winter" means 2025–26 and is shown where the resort has not posted this year's. Top, vertical, lifts and courses are the resort's or its prefecture's own figures where given; Hakusan, JAM Fukui Katsuyama, Gokayama Taira, Yume-no-Taira and Tateyama Sanroku's top are less certain, so check them. n/a means not checked. The English column is my own summary, not a measured score: high means English-speaking schools and rental are routine, some means an English website and signs, little means Japanese for most things.

First time on skis

Where to go for a first day

A first day needs a wide, gentle slope, a slow lift and a school at the base. These five say they have them.

FAQ

Skiing in Hokuriku, answered

Which ski resorts can I reach by Shinkansen from Tokyo?

Six areas, on two lines. On the Jōetsu Shinkansen, GALA Yuzawa has its own station inside the resort (71 minutes from Tokyo at the fastest), and Naeba and Kagura are a bus from Echigo-Yuzawa (about 70 minutes plus about 50 minutes). On the Hokuriku Shinkansen, Nozawa Onsen is Iiyama (about 1h 40m, ¥8,890) plus a 25 minute bus, Hakuba and Shiga Kōgen are Nagano (about 1h 20m, ¥8,450) plus a 70 minute bus, and Myōkō is Jōetsu-Myōkō (about 2h, ¥9,660) plus a local train or shuttle.

Is Niigata part of Hokuriku?

Yes. Hokuriku is Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui, and Niigata is usually counted as the fourth prefecture. The Hokuriku Shinkansen runs through Niigata Prefecture and stops at Jōetsu-Myōkō (for Myōkō) and Itoigawa. Echigo-Yuzawa, GALA Yuzawa, Naeba and Kagura are also in Niigata, but they are on the Jōetsu Shinkansen, a separate line from Takasaki. The Arch Pass does not cover it; the JR East Pass does.

When does the 2026–27 ski season start and finish?

Most resorts open in December: Shiga Kōgen's ticket runs 5 December to 5 May, Naeba opens on 18 December, GALA Yuzawa runs 19 December to 5 May, and Nozawa's regular period is 19 December to 28 March. Two open early on a little snow: Goryu in Hakuba on 21 November 2026 (Tōmi No.1 lift area only) and Kagura on 28 November. Happō-One, Hakuba47, Tsugaike, Suginohara, Lotte Arai and Nozawa's lift dates had not been announced on 14 October. The small hills in Toyama and Ishikawa open only when the snow lies, and ran from late December or January last winter.

How much is a ski lift ticket in Hokuriku in 2026–27?

An adult day ticket is ¥11,100 for the Hakuba Valley pass (10 resorts), ¥9,500 at the window and ¥8,500 online at Shiga Kōgen (18 areas), ¥8,000 at GALA Yuzawa, ¥7,800 at Nozawa Onsen, ¥7,000 at Akakura Onsen, and ¥11,800 for the combined Naeba and Kagura ticket. The Toyama and Fukui hills are cheaper: ¥5,500 on weekdays at JAM Fukui Katsuyama, and about ¥5,000 at Tateyama Sanroku and IOX-Arosa (last winter's prices, 2026–27 not yet posted).

Does the Arch Pass or JR East Pass cover a ski trip?

They cover the Shinkansen, not the buses. The Hokuriku Arch Pass (¥35,000, 7 days) reaches Nagano, Iiyama, Jōetsu-Myōkō, Toyama and Kanazawa, and the JR Ōito Line to Hakuba, but not the Jōetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa. The JR East Pass (¥35,000, 5 days) covers the Jōetsu line and the Hokuriku line as far as Jōetsu-Myōkō. For one ski trip from Tokyo, tickets usually win: Tokyo to Nagano and back is ¥16,900.

Can I combine skiing with Kanazawa or snow crab?

Yes, and it is what makes the region different. Nagano to Kanazawa is 1h 5m on the Kagayaki (¥9,170), and Toyama to Kanazawa 18–23 minutes. Snow crab season runs from 6 November 2026 to 20 March 2027 and Himi's winter yellowtail from November to February. See the snow crab and Toyama food guides.

Which Hokuriku ski resort is best for a first-timer?

Tsugaike Kōgen in Hakuba has three beginner slopes and a beginner-area day ticket at ¥5,900, against ¥9,800 for the whole mountain. Goryu's Tōmi slope is long, wide and gentle, with night skiing. From Tokyo, GALA Yuzawa has its station inside the resort and beginner courses (Melody, 350 m, and Edelweiss, 1,600 m). Nozawa Onsen and Ikenotaira also have wide, gentle slopes for a first day.

Can I take a ski lesson in Chinese in Hokuriku?

Mostly in Hakuba. Evergreen International Ski School (Happō-One, Tsugaike, Iwatake, Cortina) lists Mandarin for its Platinum Experience private lesson and lets you choose a full-day private instructor by language. JSKI teaches in Chinese at Tsugaike, Cortina, Goryu and Lotte Arai, and Hakuba Valley's school directory lists Hakuba Snow Sports School and Gran Paradiso Snow Academy as Chinese-speaking. Ask for the language when you book: the schools give Chinese as a request, not a guarantee.
