In brief

GALA Yuzawa (ガーラ湯沢) is a ski resort in Yuzawa, Niigata, with its own station on the Jōetsu Shinkansen: 71 minutes from Tokyo at the fastest, then straight onto the gondola. Skiing runs from 19 December 2026 to 5 May 2027. An adult day ticket is ¥8,000, or ¥7,500 on the web. It is not on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, so the Hokuriku Arch Pass does not reach it; the JR East Pass and the JR Pass do. The South area is closed this winter.

The ski resort at the end of the Shinkansen

This is the easiest ski day from Tokyo, and the one I would give to a visitor with only a few days: no bus, no transfer and no car, just the Jōetsu Shinkansen to a platform inside the resort. The mountain has a vertical of 823 m, 16 courses in four areas (the South area is shut this winter) and a longest run of 2,500 m, with 35% of the terrain rated beginner and 45% intermediate.

It also sits at the Tokyo end of the corridor that leads to Hokuriku: ride back to Takasaki or Tokyo and the Hokuriku Shinkansen carries on to Lotte Arai, Madarao, Toyama and Kanazawa. Below: the train and car, how a pass fits, the lift tickets, the courses, and where to stay in Echigo-Yuzawa.

Getting there

By Shinkansen, or by car

The train is the point of GALA Yuzawa; the car is for adding other resorts.

By Shinkansen

Tokyo to GALA Yuzawa · 71 min at the fastest

Jōetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to GALA Yuzawa Station, which is part of the resort: the platform connects to the ski area and the gondola. The station is open for the ski season, so check the timetable for your date. If a train does not stop there, ride to Echigo-Yuzawa (1h 07m from Tokyo, ¥6,900 reserved) and take the free shuttle, about 10 minutes.

The resort has a spacious locker room, and rental pick-up opens at 7:30, so an early train from Tokyo puts you on the snow in the morning.

Passes: the JR East Pass (Nagano, Niigata area) and the JR Pass cover the Jōetsu Shinkansen. The Hokuriku Arch Pass does not reach this line. For one ski day, ordinary tickets cost less than any pass.

By car

Echigo-Yuzawa Station · 1.5 km from the resort

Collect the car at Echigo-Yuzawa Station; the resort is 1.5 km away, a few minutes. From central Tokyo it is about 190 km on the Kan-Etsu Expressway, roughly 2h 45m with no traffic, and ski weekends are slower.

Winter tyres are needed. Ask for them when you book the hire car. A car makes sense mainly when you want to add Naeba or Kagura, or the Uonuma countryside, to the trip. Licence rules are in our car-hire notes.

Where to stay

Near the lifts and around Echigo-Yuzawa Station

Eleven stays, all within about 2 km of the lifts. Check rates shows tonight's price for your dates.

How to choose: the ski area has no big slope-side hotel, so the choice is between a ryokan close to the lifts (the first six) and the Echigo-Yuzawa Station area, with its shops, sake hall and restaurants, a few minutes further on. Most of these are onsen ryokan, so a bath comes with the night. If you only ski for a day from Tokyo, you do not need to stay at all.

After the lifts

Echigo-Yuzawa is a rice and sake town in snow country, and the station is the place to start.

  1. 01
Sake. Ponshukan, the sake tasting hall inside Echigo-Yuzawa Station, lets you try many Niigata brews before the train home. See the Niigata sake notes.
  2. 02
Rice and soba. The Uonuma area around Yuzawa grows famous Koshihikari rice, and hegi soba, buckwheat noodles served on a wooden tray, is the local noodle dish. See the Niigata guide.
  3. 03
The bath. Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen is the reason to stay a night: most of the ryokan above have their own baths, and Takahan's Snow Country inn is worth a look even if you stay elsewhere.
  4. 04
A bigger mountain. Naeba and Kagura are a bus from Echigo-Yuzawa and sit on a larger lift network; the Hokuriku ski overview compares all three.
  5. 05
Back to Hokuriku. The Skiing in Hokuriku guide shows how to string GALA, Myōkō and Nagano onto one trip, and our ski guides cover each resort.
