Sep–NovOne of the easiest classical Japanese cities to reach. Hokuriku Shinkansen direct from Tokyo, Thunderbird + Tsurugi from Kansai, Komatsu Airport for further-afield. Compact and walkable once you're in town.
The Hokuriku Shinkansen delivers Tokyo to Kanazawa in 2h 27m on the fastest Kagayaki service, faster than Tokyo to Kyoto. From Kansai, the Thunderbird limited express runs to Tsuruga where you change to the Tsurugi shinkansen (~2h from Kyoto, ~2h 30m from Osaka since the March 2024 extension).
The Kagayaki has no unreserved car, always reserve. During peak periods (Golden Week, Obon, autumn weekends, New Year), reserved seats sell out 2–3 weeks ahead. The slower Hakutaka runs the same route in 2h 50m–3h 04m and has unreserved seats.
For most international visitors, the Hokuriku Arch Pass (¥30,000 / 7 days) is significantly better value than the full JR Pass for a Tokyo–Hokuriku–Kansai loop. See the passes section below.
Kagayaki in 2h 27m (¥14,380, reserved-only). Hakutaka in 2h 50m–3h 04m (¥14,180, has unreserved). Both run from Tokyo Station; trains roughly 1–2 Kagayaki per hour during the day plus more frequent Hakutaka.
From Ueno ~2h 25m, Omiya 2h 5m. First Kagayaki departs Tokyo ~06:16 (Kenrokuen by 9 AM); last ~21:04 arriving Kanazawa ~23:30.
Since the Hokuriku Shinkansen extended to Tsuruga in March 2024, the routing changed: Thunderbird from Osaka or Kyoto → Tsuruga (1h 20m from Shin-Osaka, 50m from Kyoto), transfer at Tsuruga to the Tsurugi shinkansen → Kanazawa (50m).
Total: Kyoto ~2h, Shin-Osaka ~2h 30m. From Nagoya: JR Limited Express Shirasagi to Tsuruga + Tsurugi shinkansen, ~3h. The scenic alternative is the JR Hida through the mountains via Toyama (~3h 30m).
Kanazawa's main aviation gateway. Daily flights from Tokyo Haneda (~1h, ANA + JAL); seasonal services from Sapporo, Sendai, Naha, Fukuoka. Limited international (seasonal Taipei, Seoul charters).
From the airport: limousine bus to Kanazawa Station (East/West exits) and Korinbo, ~40 min, ¥1,300, every 30–60 min timed with flights. Taxi ~¥10,000+. Major rental car desks at the airport, compare rates on Rakuten Travel.
Significantly cheaper than the Shinkansen at ¥4,000–¥9,000. Operators include Hokuriku Tetsudo, JR Bus Kanto, and Nishitokyo Bus. Book on Highway Bus dot com or Willer Express.
Useful for budget travellers who don't mind losing a night's sleep, or as a backup if Shinkansen reservations are sold out during peak periods.
The city is compact, Kenrokuen, Higashi Chaya, Nagamachi, the 21st Century Museum, and Omicho Market are all within a 4 km radius around Kanazawa Station. Walking is genuinely viable for full days.
Two loops (left / right) connecting Kanazawa Station with all the major sights, Higashi Chaya, Kenrokuen, 21st Century Museum, Nagamachi. Every ~15 min. Day pass also covers regular Hokutetsu city buses in the central zone, pays for itself on your fourth ride.
Public bike-share with 70+ pickup/return stations across the city. Excellent way to see widely-spread sights in a single day; faster than the bus during the day.
Higashi Chaya → Kenrokuen 20 min, Kenrokuen → Nagamachi 15 min, Nagamachi → 21st Century Museum 10 min. The Asano River walk between Higashi Chaya and Kazuemachi is one of the best free things in town.
Regular city bus network. ¥210 in the central zone (covered by the Loop Bus 1-day pass). Useful for connections the Loop Bus doesn't cover.
Saturday/Sunday/holiday-only loop bus, simpler route than the Loop Bus, hits the major tourist spots. Cheap if you're only making 1–2 hops.
From Kanazawa Station to most tourist destinations. Useful for late evenings or when buses get crowded. Plentiful at the station East exit.
