Shirakawa-go白川郷

The viewpoint photo of Shirakawa-go that's on every brochure, looking down on a valley of thatched roofs with mountains as backdrop. Walk it (15–20 min uphill) for the experience and photo stops along the way; or take the shuttle bus (¥200, ~5 min) if pressed for time.

Best photographed in morning for soft light and fewer tourists in shot, in late afternoon for golden-hour shadows, or in winter mornings for the famous snow-and-mist version.

The largest gassho-zukuri farmhouse in Shirakawa-go (300+ years old) and a designated National Important Cultural Property. The Wada family still owns and lives in part of the house, what you tour is the front portion.

Inside: the 1F living quarters with sunken hearth (irori), reception room, family altar; the 2F silkworm-rearing loft with massive structural beams, smoke-darkened from generations of fires below. Tools and family artefacts span the 17th–20th centuries.

Most lunch shops occupy traditional gassho buildings and serve Hida-gyu (飛騨牛), Gifu's prized black wagyu, one of Japan's top brands. Three approaches:

Hida beef burger at Cafe Genmai-no-Yado (¥1,800). Hida beef bowl (Hida-don) at multiple shops (¥2,500). Or hoba miso, beef + Hida miso grilled on a magnolia leaf (¥2,000). Local Shirakawa-go fortified soba, kameyama-mochi rice cakes, and Watari sake round out the menu.

Reservations not required for most lunch service. Recommended: Tagamine (田辺屋), Sho-no-Sato (荘の郷), or Cafe Saito for coffee + sweets in a renovated gassho.

The open-air museum across the river, 9 transplanted gassho-zukuri farmhouses from outlying villages assembled into a walkable mini-village. Different house types and eras, plus traditional-life demonstrations (silk-making, bamboo weaving).

Worth visiting after the main village because it's quieter, has no modern intrusions in photos, and shows variety the inhabited village can't.
