When to visit四季の金沢

Cherry blossoms peak in early April at Kenrokuen, the Asano River banks (gorgeous reflections in flowing water), Sai River, and Kanazawa Castle. Free Kenrokuen entry during the bloom week, exact dates announced annually. Plum blossoms in Kenrokuen open about two weeks earlier in late February.

Hotaru-ika (firefly squid) season runs March–May, at Omicho boiled, occasionally as sashimi when freshest, and as kuro-zukuri ink-fermented. Yukitsuri ropes are removed mid-March, early March is the last chance to see them. Bookings: 3+ months for sakura week, 2+ for Golden Week (Apr 29 – May 5).

The Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival (early June) is the city's biggest annual celebration, commemorating Maeda Toshiie's founding of Kanazawa in 1583. Friday-evening fireworks along Asano River, Saturday's main parade with 4,000+ Edo-period costumed participants from Kanazawa Station to Castle Park (Lord Maeda on horseback), Sunday tea ceremony at the Castle and traditional dance at Kenrokuen. Asano River Yuzen Nagashi runs the same weekend, Kaga-yuzen kimono fabric being rinsed in the river.

Iris (kakitsubata) bloom in Hyotanike Pond at Kenrokuen late May–early June. Fireflies appear along the Onosho Channel in Nagamachi on humid June evenings. July–August is hot and humid; the museums become air-conditioned escapes. Obon week (Aug 13–15) draws heavy crowds with local Bon Odori dances.

September is one of Kanazawa's quietest months, beautiful weather, sansai mountain vegetables and matsutake beginning, and almost no tourists. Foliage starts in October and peaks mid-November at Kenrokuen, the Asano River banks, and Castle Park. ~300 maples reflect on Kasumigaike Pond.

The hidden gem: yukitsuri snow ropes are installed Nov 1, so early-November visits catch foliage AND yukitsuri in one frame, a rare overlap window. Snow crab fishing season opens late October, and the nodoguro top quality begins. Kenrokuen autumn light-up runs select weekends. Bookings: 2+ months for foliage weekends.

Snow crab (zuwai-gani) is at its absolute peak, tagged Kano-gani (male) and Kobako-gani (female with prized roe Nov–Dec only). Crab kaiseki at high-end ryotei runs ¥20,000–¥40,000+.

Free Kenrokuen entry Dec 31 – Jan 3. Kenrokuen winter light-ups run select weekends. The Shirakawa-go winter Light-Up is just five evenings across Jan–Feb; tickets sell out 6+ months ahead. Plum blossoms in Kenrokuen begin late February. Hotel pricing is the lowest of the year (excluding the New Year holiday spike), January is genuinely Kanazawa's quietest period.
