In brief

Wakasa is the old province that became western Fukui: the crinkled coast of Wakasa Bay from Tsuruga to the Kyoto border at Takahama. For 1,300 years it was a Miketsukuni (御食国), a province that fed the imperial court, and its salted mackerel went south on foot to Kyoto along the Saba-kaidō (鯖街道). Since March 2024 the Hokuriku Shinkansen ends at Tsuruga, which makes this the newest easy-to-reach corner of the corridor.

Eat mackerel five ways. Grilled whole on skewers in Obama, cured a year in rice bran as heshiko, fermented again into narezushi in Tagarasu, pressed into saba-zushi. Polish your own chopsticks in the town that makes over 80% of Japan's lacquered pairs. See the Mikata Five Lakes from the Rainbow Line terraces, then the 45 m lake-bed core that became the world's clock for radiocarbon dating. Wakasa runs about 85 km east to west along the JR Obama Line. Most visits pick two clusters.

Mikata Five Lakes三方五湖

Mihama · Kiyama · Mikata stations · 21–31 min from Tsuruga

Five linked lakes, each a different shade because each holds a different mix of fresh and salt water. See them all from the Rainbow Line summit park (terraces, foot baths, ¥1,000 lift), then take a lake cruise past the plum orchards.

Obama and Onyu小浜・遠敷

The capital of the mackerel coast. Grilled saba in the old port, Sotomo sea-cave boats (Apr–Nov), a food museum where you polish a pair of Wakasa-nuri chopsticks for ¥1,100, and more old temples than anywhere on the Sea of Japan coast.

Kumagawa-juku and Uriwari Falls熊川宿・瓜割の滝

Kaminaka station · 50–56 min from Tsuruga, then bus

The best-preserved stop on the Saba-kaidō: a kilometre of merchant houses along a fast stone channel, 1h 30m from Kyoto by car. Ten minutes away, Uriwari Falls is a cold spring on Japan's Top 100 Waters list, named because it was cold enough to split a melon.

Takahama and Wakasa Wada Beach高浜・若狭和田ビーチ

Wakasa-Wada station · 1h 29m–1h 40m from Tsuruga

Fine white sand, shallow clear water and mountain views. In 2016 Wakasa Wada became Asia's first Blue Flag beach. Ten minutes' walk from the station; 25–30 minutes from Higashi-Maizuru on the Kyoto side.

Covers the Shinkansen, the Thunderbird (seat reservation required) and the Obama Line. Worth it only if you also travel well beyond Hokuriku and Kansai. Prebooked, it costs ¥53,000, and sellers such as Klook post it to your home, so it is in hand before you fly. The official price is ¥50,000, but you buy it at a major JR station in Japan, where the queues can be long.

Wakasa questions, answered

How do you get to Wakasa from Tokyo?

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tsuruga (fastest Kagayaki 3h 6m, about ¥16,580 reserved), then the JR Obama Line west. Tsuruga to Obama is 1h 4m–1h 9m and ¥990.

Can you visit Wakasa as a day trip from Kyoto?

Yes. The Thunderbird reaches Tsuruga in 52m, or take the Kosei Line to Ōmi-Imazu and the JR bus over the Saba-kaidō to Obama (about 2h, ¥2,340), stopping at Kumagawa-juku on the way. Obama is the easiest single-town day trip.

Does the Hokuriku Arch Pass cover the Obama Line?

Yes, since 14 March 2026. The Arch Pass (¥35,000, 7 days) covers the Shinkansen to Tsuruga, the Thunderbird and the whole JR Obama Line. The JR Pass covers it too.

Do I need a car in Wakasa?

Not for the towns: the Obama Line stops at Mihama, Mikata, Kaminaka, Obama and Wakasa-Wada. A car helps for the Rainbow Line summit park, Uriwari Falls with Kumagawa-juku in one day, and the auberges on the Uchitomi peninsula. Hire at Tsuruga Station; Tsuruga to Obama is 35 minutes by expressway.

What food is Wakasa known for?

Mackerel. Grilled whole on skewers in Obama, cured in rice bran as heshiko, fermented again into narezushi in Tagarasu, and pressed into saba-zushi. Winter brings Wakasa fugu and crab; summer, wild rock oysters and guji tilefish.

What is the best time to visit Wakasa?

July and August for Wakasa Wada Beach (season 11 July to 30 August in 2026) and Sotomo boat trips; November to February for fugu, crab and winter mackerel; early March for plum blossom at the Five Lakes and the Omizu-okuri on 2 March.
