Tobira Onsen Myōjinkan
A 1931 onsen inn alone at 1,050 m, with a standing bath open to the forest and French or Japanese dinner.
Oct–NovWhere Japan’s 3,000-metre Alps meet the sea, and where Japan eats best. Toyama City spends more on sushi per household than any other city in Japan. In Iwase, one old port district, MICHELIN-starred kaiseki and French are a short walk apart, and auberges like L’évo make dinner the reason for the stay. Four prefectures, one Shinkansen, better value than Tokyo and none of the Kyoto crowds.

For the first time in three autumns the torokko climbs the full 20.1 km from 1 October to 30 November. Add the Tateyama Ropeway over a valley of colour and Kenrokuen's free light-ups, all on one Shinkansen line.
Peak dates, booking & itineraries →Nine destinations along the Hokuriku Shinkansen and its connecting lines, from the Japan Alps to the Sea of Japan.
Japan’s deepest V-shaped gorge turns red and gold from late October, and the torokko runs the full line to Keyakidaira again from 1 October to 30 November. Stay a night at Unazuki Onsen, Toyama’s ryokan valley, or base yourself in Toyama City, one Shinkansen stop west.

Three geisha districts, Kenrokuen, 99% of Japan's gold leaf, refined Kaga cuisine, Michelin sushi.
Tōjinbō's pillar cliffs, the Zen head temple Eiheiji, Japan's dinosaur capital, Echizen crab, and our standout stay, Auberge Homachi.
Obama's chopsticks and grilled mackerel, heshiko, five lakes, Kumagawa-juku and Asia's first Blue Flag beach. The old Saba Kaidō ran from here to Kyoto; the train now takes about 2h, the drive 1h 40m. Now on the Arch Pass.
The first stop from Tokyo, then 45 minutes up the Nagaden: wild snow monkeys bathing at Jigokudani, Shibu Onsen's nine public baths opened with your inn's key, and Kanaguya, the 1936 wooden ryokan widely said to have inspired Spirited Away.
Powder resorts a Shinkansen ride and a short bus from Tokyo: Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen, Shiga Kōgen, Myōkō and GALA Yuzawa, 1h 11m from Tokyo. Most resorts open 12–19 December; the New Year weeks (28 Dec–5 Jan) need booking early. Season dates, lift prices, bus times and the inns at the lifts, in one guide.
One stay per region we would build a trip around: onsen ryokan, a MICHELIN Key inn and a village of machiya suites.
A 1931 onsen inn alone at 1,050 m, with a standing bath open to the forest and French or Japanese dinner.

One hotel in Toyama for the Alps, the gorge and Iwase's restaurant street, then Kanazawa's gardens and teahouses at an easy pace. Day by day
Tokyo to Osaka along the Sea of Japan coast on one Hokuriku Arch Pass (¥35,000, 7 days). Which pass pays. Coming back to Tokyo on the Tōkaidō instead? The Golden Triangle runs this loop in 7, 10 or 14 days with the fares worked out.
The full answers, with timetables and fares, are in the trip planner.
A week in Hokuriku covers Toyama and Kanazawa properly, with whole days for the Alpine Route, the Kurobe Gorge and Kanazawa's gardens. Two weeks is the trip to take if you can: add Awara Onsen, Fukui and the Wakasa coast, then finish in Kyoto by Thunderbird. With only 3 days from Tokyo, stay in Toyama and Kanazawa. See Slow Hokuriku and the day-by-day itineraries.
The Hokuriku Shinkansen runs from Tokyo Station to Toyama in 2h 4m (¥13,180 reserved) and to Kanazawa in 2h 24m (¥14,600) on the fastest Kagayaki, then on to Fukui and Tsuruga. The Kagayaki is all-reserved, so book a seat even with a rail pass. See the Hokuriku Shinkansen guide.
Hokuriku is called the quiet side of Japan because it faces the Sea of Japan, away from the Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka corridor that most visitors follow, and it sees a small fraction of their tourists. In our view it has more mountains, fresher fish and better sake than any of them. See why Hokuriku.
The Hokuriku Arch Pass (¥35,000, 7 days, foreign visitors only) is the best-value pass for Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka through Toyama, Kanazawa and Fukui. The nationwide 7-day JR Pass (¥50,000 from JR, ¥53,000 through agents such as Klook from 1 October 2026) only pays off for longer trips, and a Tokyo to Kanazawa return alone is cheaper on normal tickets. See getting around.
Mid-April to May and October to November are the best times to visit Hokuriku, with sakura or autumn leaves, clear days and the Alpine Route open. Winter brings snow crab and powder snow but grey skies, and June to July is the rainy season. See when to visit.
Hokuriku has seasonal sights no other region does: firefly squid glowing in Toyama Bay (March–May), the Yuki-no-Otani snow wall on the Alpine Route (from mid-April), the 3,000 m Tateyama range seen across the sea on clear winter days, snow crab from 6 November and winter yellowtail. See when to visit.
Three quietly good things happening across Hokuriku this autumn.

Peak hiking, cycling the coast, jade hunting, and alpine air. Warm and humid by the sea; cool at altitude. Fireworks festivals along the coast.
Our favourite season. Clear skies, crimson maples in the gorges, and beni-zuwai crab is already in season from September. Peak foliage in late October.
Legendary deep-powder ski season in Myōkō and Hakuba. Hokuriku’s snowiest region. Onsen ryokan at their most atmospheric; monkfish hotpot everywhere.
