Unazuki Onsen宇奈月温泉

The main reason many travellers visit Unazuki. A small open-sided trolley train runs ~20 km along the Kurobe Gorge, Japan’s deepest ravine, passing under towering cliffs, across gravity-defying bridges, and through tunnels.

Three intermediate stations (Kuronagi, Kanetsuri, Keyakidaira) let you get off to hike, soak in outdoor baths, or view waterfalls. The full Keyakidaira return takes ~3.5 hours including a stop. Reserved enclosed cars cost more; the open-sided cars are the iconic experience.

A free walking trail that follows an old railway bed above the gorge. The best short walk in town, with views across to the trolley trains below and the mountains beyond. About 30 min one-way.

Pair with the Yamabiko Mountain Scenery Viewpoint next to the station, a short detour for a different angle of the gorge mouth.

Small craft brewery using pure Kurobe River water. Tasting room with ice-cold craft lagers and ales, seasonal specials, and a small restaurant, a nice afternoon break from onsen between the trolley return and dinner.

A short walk away, the Unazuki Onsen Station Area includes a free outdoor footbath, souvenir shops with local masuzushi and Unazuki-branded beer, and the Tourist Information Centre.

The reason most travellers come for an overnight. Unazuki kaiseki blends Toyama Bay seafood (shiroebi, buri in winter, hotaruika in spring) with Kurobe mountain vegetables (sansai), Kurobe River trout (ayu, iwana), and masuzushi as a starter.

Most ryokan baths look out over the Kurobe River. Many serve novelty plates like Kurobe Dam curry or onsen manju sweet buns. Ensei-en is the storied premium choice; smaller ryokan like Kuroshio have distinctive riverside open-air baths.
