The Alpine Route, and so the dam, is open to 30 November 2026. The tourist discharge ended on 15 October (it ran 26 June–15 October). The Kurobe Lake cruise ended on 10 November 2024. Nothing is announced for 2027.

In brief

Kurobe Dam (黒部ダム) is 186 m tall, the tallest dam in Japan, with a 492 m crest, and it sits in the middle of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. There is no road to it. From Nagano the Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus from Ōgizawa takes 16 minutes (¥1,800). From Toyama it is ¥9,140 one way to Kurobeko, then a 15-minute walk over the dam. Allow 1–2 hours there. No separate admission fee is listed: you pay the route fare.

A wall of concrete at 1,500 m

Kansai Electric built the dam between 1956 and 1963 to feed the Kuroyon power station, and 171 workers died on the job. The arch holds back Kurobe Lake (黒部湖), about 200 million m³ of water, inside Chūbu-Sangaku National Park. The only ways in are the tunnel bus from Ōgizawa and the cable car and ropeway from the Toyama side.

Most people cross it on the Alpine Route and stop for an hour or two. The works route from Keyakidaira, the Canyon Route, also comes out at the dam, but only on guided tours. For fares and booking see the Alpine Route tickets guide; this page covers the dam itself.

The dam and the discharge観光放水

Summer only · 26 June–15 October in 2026

Each summer the dam releases water from two valves high on the wall, a spray of 10 tonnes a second or more that falls into the gorge. It keeps the Kurobe River running through the gorge below, including past Unazuki, when the summer flow is low. On sunny days a rainbow forms in the mist.

The 2026 discharge ended on 15 October. If you are here for it, plan for late June to mid October in 2027 (this year ran 26 June–15 October); the dates are not announced.

Four viewpoints展望台・レインボーテラス

From Kurobe Dam Station · most within 20 minutes

The observation deck is up 220 steps from the tunnel bus station, at about 1,508 m. The discharge viewing stage is on a barrier-free path from the front of the rest house, so prams and wheelchairs reach it. The Rainbow Terrace (レインボーテラス), the newer viewing plaza, is the closest view of the discharge, almost level with it and misty. You can also walk the 492 m crest.

Without the discharge, the deck and the crest are still the views: the arch, the green lake and the peaks behind it.

Kurobe Lake, and no cruise黒部湖

Kurobeko Station is at the lake end · 15 min on foot to the dam

The lake behind the dam is what the Toyama-side route runs beside. From Kurobeko Station, at the lake end, you walk 15 minutes along the dam to the tunnel bus station; it is the one stretch of the crossing that costs nothing extra.

The Garbe lake cruise, about 30 minutes on Kurobe Lake, ended on 10 November 2024. Its operator, Kanden Amenix, cited falling passenger numbers and an ageing hull. Older guides still list it.

The leaves at the dam were at peak on 20 October this year; by the last week of November there can be snow on the slope. The photograph here is from the closing day in 2024. Wear what you would for the high mountains: the dam stands at about 1,500 m and the mist from the wall makes it colder.

From Nagano: Ōgizawa and the tunnel bus

Shinano-Ōmachi ¥2,000 · Ōgizawa to the dam ¥1,800

The quickest way to the dam alone. The Alpico express bus from Nagano Station East Exit reaches Ōgizawa in about 1h 35m (the first leaves at 7:50 and arrives at 9:25; roadworks can slow it), or take the local bus from Shinano-Ōmachi in 40 minutes. Then the Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus, 16 minutes, ¥1,800 each way. You book the Ōgizawa departure time when you buy. Return for the dam is ¥3,600 plus the local bus. The last local bus to Shinano-Ōmachi leaves Ōgizawa at 17:55. There is no direct Ōgizawa to Hakuba bus in 2026.

From Toyama: Tateyama and the cable cars

Tateyama to Kurobeko ¥9,140 one way

Six stages with about 1h 20m of riding each way before queues, then the 15 minute walk over the dam. It is a full day: the main guide plans 8–10 hours for the whole crossing. A return from Tateyama is ¥16,480. Same-day tickets were almost gone on 8–13 October, so book the time slot.

Before you go

Tips for the dam

It is cold, wet and high, and the buses run to a timetable.

  1. 01
Book the Ōgizawa time. The tunnel bus out of Ōgizawa is one of only two rides with a booked departure on the route, and the WEB ticket fixes it with the fare.
  2. 02
Dress for 1,500 m. It is much colder than Toyama or Nagano, and the spray from the wall wets the viewpoints. In late November expect near-freezing weather and slippery steps.
  3. 03
Take the stairs slowly or skip them. The deck is 220 steps up; the discharge stage and the crest are on level, barrier-free paths.
  4. 04
Fog and snow can close sections. If the operator suspends a section, a WEB ticket is refunded without a fee. Missed connections are not refunded.
  5. 05
Use the lockers. Kurobe Dam is one of six stations with lockers. The official luggage forwarding service ran 15 April–8 November 2026.
  6. 06
Check the last bus. From the Toyama side the last through connection to Ōgizawa is the 15:00 cable car from Tateyama; the last local bus from Ōgizawa to Shinano-Ōmachi is 17:55.
