In brief

Iwase (岩瀬) is 21 minutes from Toyama Station on the Toyama Port Line (¥240, ¥220 with IC). Plan half a day: sake at Saseki (10:00–17:00, closed Tuesdays, ¥200–500 a glass), the Baba house (¥100), the Taizo glass studio, then dinner at one of four Michelin-listed tables. The Mori house is closed after the Noto earthquake, until at least fiscal 2027.

A port that grew rich on rice, sake and kelp

Iwase (岩瀬) appears in the Muromachi-era shipping code as Etchū Iwase, one of the “three ports and seven harbours”. In the Edo and Meiji periods the Kitamae-bune merchant ships called here: rice and sake went north, and kelp and herring came home. That trade is why Toyama eats so much kelp, and why this small port once held some of the richest houses in the prefecture.

Those houses survive, and now they hold a brewery bar, craft studios and some of the hardest tables to book in Toyama. The Toyama base plan sends everyone here for a sake tasting; this page is the longer version, with hours, fares and what is closed.

What to see

Seven stops on the Kitamae-bune street

Half a day covers the lot. The Mori house is the one you cannot enter; everything else below is open, with the caveats shown.

The tram to Iwase富山港線

Toyama Station to Higashi-Iwase · 21 min · Toyama Port Line

The Toyama Port Line (富山港線, also called the Toyama Light Rail) runs from Toyama Station to the old port. It takes 21 minutes to Higashi-Iwase and costs ¥240 (¥220 with an IC card) on 14 October 2026; the line ends at Iwasehama. Get off at Higashi-Iwase for the street and Saseki (about 10 min on foot), or at Keirinjo-mae for Cave Yunoki (5 min) and GEJO (476 m). The line belongs to Toyama Chitetsu, so the JR Pass does not cover it.

The Kitamae-bune merchant street北前船の廻船問屋街

Ōmachi, Niikawa-chō and Higashi-Iwase-machi · 20–30 min on foot

Iwase was one of the ports of the Kitamae-bune merchant ships: rice and sake went north from here, and kelp and herring came back. A great fire in the early Meiji period burnt the town, and the shipping agents’ street that was rebuilt came through the Second World War. Today the old wooden houses hold workshops, bars and restaurants, and the retro banks are worth a look too.

Walk it slowly. The long, narrow plots, deep eaves and storehouses behind the street are the point, and it takes 20 to 30 minutes with no stops.

Baba House旧馬場家住宅

Higashi-Iwase-machi · 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30)

The largest shipowner’s house in Iwase, from one of the five leading families. A 30 m earthen corridor (tōri-niwa) runs through it, and a room holds 33 tatami. Entry is ¥100 for adults (¥90 for groups), free for high school students and younger, cash only. It is closed over New Year.

A craft brewery, KOBO Brew Pub, opened in 2020 in the family’s old granary, with ten rotating taps and a sake-lees beer. It is the easy daytime stop on the street.

Mori House (closed)旧森家住宅

108 Higashi-Iwase-machi · closed after the 2024 Noto earthquake

A nationally designated Important Cultural Property, built around 1878 as a shipping agent’s house. It is closed for seismic reinforcement after the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, and the city plans to reopen it sometime after fiscal year 2027. Admission when open was ¥100, 9:00–17:00. The photograph shows its main house.

Its storehouses are in use: Cave Yunoki and the Taizo Glass Studio are both in the Mori storehouse row.

Masuizumi and Saseki満寿泉・沙石

Masuda Shuzō, 269 Higashi-Iwase-machi · Saseki, 93 Iwase-Ōmachi

Masuda Shuzō (桝田酒造店, founded 1893) brews Masuizumi. The brewery is a working one, so the place for visitors is its standing bar and shop, Saseki (沙石), opened in 2019, which pours about 100 kinds. It is open 10:00–17:00, closed Tuesdays. You pay ¥200–500 a glass, or ¥1,000 for 15 minutes or ¥2,000 for 30 minutes of all you can drink, once a day (prices from a July 2024 report, updated January 2025). Snacks are ¥300.

The brewery’s own counter keeps weekday hours and is closed at weekends, and brewery visits are by reservation, so use Saseki unless you have booked.

Taizo Glass StudioTAIZO GLASS

Mori storehouse row, Higashi-Iwase-machi

Taizo Yasuda founded his glass studio in 1997 and moved it in 2005 into a corner of the Mori family storehouses. He makes handblown, multicoloured pieces in the Venetian manner. I could not confirm the studio’s opening days, so ring ahead or check its social media before you walk over. For a bigger look at glass, the Toyama Glass Art Museum is in the city.

Practical tips

Before you go

Six things that decide whether a half day in Iwase works.

  1. 01
Book dinner before you go. All four Michelin tables are reservation-only. GEJO’s cancellation fee starts at 50% four days ahead.
  2. 02
Mind the Tuesday and weekend closures. Saseki is closed on Tuesdays, Cave Yunoki and Oryōri Fujii on Mondays, and the brewery’s own counter at weekends.
  3. 03
Do not plan around the Mori house. It is closed. The Baba house is open and nearly as good.
  4. 04
Bring cash. The Baba house takes cash only, and Saseki’s snack counter is small.
  5. 05
Check the last tram. A dinner seating at 18:30 can end after it. Look at the timetable before you book, or plan a taxi back to Toyama Station.
  6. 06
Go while the boat runs. The 2026 season ends on 23 November on the listing I found, so autumn is the last chance this year.
Where to stay

Base yourself at Toyama Station

Iwase has hardly any beds, and the tram takes 21 minutes from the station, so sleep in Toyama.
