In brief

Inami (井波) is a wood-carving town in Nanto, 52–60 minutes by bus from Shin-Takaoka (¥820). Zuisen-ji (¥500, 9:00–16:30) has the best carving, and the studios on Yōkamachi-dōri are the reason to walk the town. Plan half a day, or stay at Bed and Craft (from ¥22,000 a person with breakfast), where a three-hour carving apprenticeship costs ¥13,000 and needs an overnight stay.

Why a temple made a carving town

Inami grew around Zuisen-ji (瑞泉寺), founded in 1390. After a fire in 1762 the temple was rebuilt with carvers from Kyoto, and local craftsmen learned from them. The result is a town where the main street still has working studios, and where the carving used to decorate houses, temples and shrines is made. The craft was certified as Japan Heritage in May 2018.

It is small and walkable, with no train: you come by bus or car. That is also its appeal. Inami is the quiet end of the same mountain country as Gokayama and Shirakawa-go, 15 minutes by car from the Tonami tulip fields, and it works best as a half day or a night, not a rushed stop between trains.

What to see

Six stops in and around the carving town

Zuisen-ji and Yōkamachi-dōri are the town. The two halls are for the carving itself. Hours and fees were checked on 14 October 2026; ring ahead for anything that matters.

A Jōdo Shinshū temple founded in 1390. It burnt in 1762 and was rebuilt with carvers brought from Kyoto, which is how the town learned the craft; the present main hall dates from 1885. This is where Inami carving started, and the buildings are the showroom.

Entry is ¥500 (high school and up), open 9:00–16:30 on the temple’s own page (another listing gives an 8:30 opening). No closing days are listed. The garden has wisteria in April and May and colour in November.

The Prince’s Hall is the building to look at slowly. Its carving is the most eye-catching in the temple. Walk round the outside before you go in, then look at the joinery: the carvers’ work is in the gaps, not only on the panels.

Most visitors read the carvings at eye level and miss the tabasami (手挟), the carved brackets under the eaves, shown here. The temple’s main hall has gold lacquer inside and zodiac and mythical beasts in the second hall, so bring a small pair of binoculars or your phone’s zoom.

From the temple gate down the main street

The town’s carving street. Studios sit next to cafés, galleries and sake shops, and the shopfronts carry carved seven lucky gods and the twelve zodiac animals: 31 cat statues have been counted. You will hear mallets through open workshop doors. Carvers use 200 to 300 kinds of chisel and knife.

Studios keep their own hours and some close without notice, so treat the street as a walk and the studios as a bonus. Some take carving experiences under a craftsman’s guidance: ask at the door.

Carving workshops and the craftsman stay

Two ways to try the work yourself. One is a short sake-cup session, the other is an apprenticeship attached to a night at Bed and Craft.

Carve a sake cupぐい呑み作り

Inami Tourist Information Centre · 2 to 8 people · ages 12 and up

There is a guinomi workshop: you carve a cup from Japanese cypress, brand “Inami” on it, then taste sake at Wakakoma Brewery. Book by 16:00, three days ahead. The workshop is closed from 28 December to 5 January.

The Nanto tourist office also runs a one-on-one Inami tour with a local guide that includes carving a cup at Kurokami-an (the entrance is shown here) and lunch. Its two language versions quote different prices (¥18,000 and ¥26,000), so confirm the figure when you book.

Seven houses, each for one group a night and each tied to a maker: a carver (TATEGU-YA, KIN-NAKA), a lacquer artist (taë), a potter (MITU), a Buddhist sculptor (TenNE), a garden designer (RoKu) and a craft designer (OUKA, the seventh house, opened in April 2026). Each has a kitchen. Guests can book an apprenticeship with the stay: ¥13,000 a person, about three hours, for a carved print, lacquered chopsticks, a lotus-shaped small dish or a spoon. A workshop alone is not sold; you must sleep at least one night.

Rates start at ¥22,000 a person with breakfast for two sharing at TATEGU-YA (up to 9 guests), ¥26,000 at KIN-NAKA and MITU, and ¥31,000 at OUKA. A cheaper sister, APARTMENTS by Bed and Craft, has rooms from ¥12,000 room only, for one person. The site says it was selected for the MICHELIN Guide 2026. It is not on Agoda: book on its own site.

The easiest way to see Inami and Tonami together, and the way to reach the Sculpture Hall and the roadside station. Neither bus is covered by a rail pass, and the Arch Pass only reaches Takaoka and Shin-Takaoka.

Practical tips

Before you go

Five things that decide whether Inami works as a day trip.

  1. 01
Count the buses before you commit. Roughly eight run from Shin-Takaoka outward, fewer come back, and the trip is about an hour each way. Pick your return bus before you pick your lunch.
  2. 02
Check the closing days. The Sculpture Hall shuts on the second and fourth Wednesday, nomi on Monday and Tuesday, NAT.BREW from Monday to Thursday, and Bed and Craft takes bookings Wednesday to Monday.
  3. 03
Time it for wisteria or colour. The temple garden is at its best in April and May, and again in November. Winter is quiet, so check studio hours before you go.
  4. 04
Pair it, do not stack it. Jōhana Station is 20 minutes from Zuisen-ji by the Nanto–Kanazawa bus, and the Tonami tulip fair is 15 minutes by car. Gokayama is a separate day: see Gokayama.
  5. 05
Bring cash. The bus does not take IC cards, and small studios and cafés often take cash only.
Where to stay

Sleep beside the work

Bed and Craft is the reason to stay in Inami. If it is full, the Tonami plain is 15 minutes away by car, and Takaoka has the train.

FAQ

Inami, answered

What is Inami famous for?

Inami (井波) in Nanto, Toyama, is known for wood carving. The craft grew around Zuisen-ji temple, founded in 1390 and rebuilt after a fire in 1762, and the town’s carving was certified as Japan Heritage in May 2018.

How do I get to Inami from Toyama or Kanazawa?

From Toyama, take the Shinkansen or Ainokaze line to Shin-Takaoka or Takaoka and then the Kaetsunō bus, 52–60 minutes and ¥820 from Shin-Takaoka. From Kanazawa Station West Exit, the Nanto–Kanazawa bus takes about 1h 10m, six times a day. Neither is covered by the JR Pass or Hokuriku Arch Pass.

How much does Zuisen-ji cost and when is it open?

Entry is ¥500 for high school students and over. The temple’s own page gives 9:00–16:30 and lists no closing days; another listing gives 8:30 as the opening time.

Can I try wood carving in Inami?

Yes. Guests of Bed and Craft can book a three-hour apprenticeship for ¥13,000 a person, but only with an overnight stay. There is also a guinomi sake-cup carving workshop for 2 to 8 people aged 12 and over, booked three days ahead.

Is Inami better than Shirakawa-go?

They are different. Shirakawa-go is a thatched village; Inami is a working craft town with a temple and studios, and far fewer visitors. For the thatched-village question, see Shirakawa-go too crowded? and Gokayama.

Is there somewhere to stay in Inami?

Bed and Craft has seven one-group houses and a room-only sister, APARTMENTS by Bed and Craft, from ¥12,000 a room. Both book on their own site. Other beds are in Tonami and Takaoka.
