The Hokuriku Shinkansen connects Tokyo through Nagano and Toyama to Kanazawa and Tsuruga. From Tokyo: Kagayaki (fastest, limited stops, reserved seats only) does Toyama in 2h 8m, ¥12,960. From Osaka and Kyoto: take Thunderbird to Tsuruga, then transfer (~3h–3h 30m total).

A coverage caveat to know up front

The JR Pass covers all JR-operated lines including the Hokuriku Shinkansen, but not the Ainokaze Toyama Railway, Toyama Chiho Railway, Toyama City Tram, or Manyo Line. These are third-sector and private lines, billed separately (¥200–¥900 per leg). For most Toyama trips, the Hokuriku Arch Pass is better value than the full JR Pass, see the Passes section below.

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route ticket and the Kurobe Gorge Railway are not covered by any pass, they’re separate purchases (~¥13,000 and ~¥1,980+ respectively).

Hokuriku Shinkansen, Tokyo → Toyama北陸新幹線

Kagayaki (fastest) · Hakutaka (frequent)

Direct from Tokyo Station. Kagayaki in 2h 8m (¥12,960 ordinary, reserved-only); Hakutaka in 2h 30m. Either service to Toyama is straightforward; book in advance during peak periods (April, Owara, Golden Week).

Times from intermediate stops: Ueno ~2h, Omiya 1h 40m, Nagano 45m, Joetsu-Myoko 40m, Itoigawa 25m, Kurobe-Unazuki-Onsen 15m, Shin-Takaoka 10m, Kanazawa 25m, Tsuruga 1h 20m.

From Osaka / Kyoto via Tsuruga関西から

Thunderbird → Tsuruga → Hokuriku Shinkansen

Since the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension opened to Tsuruga in March 2024, the fastest route from Osaka or Kyoto is now via Tsuruga: Thunderbird limited express (Kyoto or Shin-Osaka) → Tsuruga (~1h 20m from Shin-Osaka), then Hokuriku Shinkansen → Toyama (~1h 20m).

Total from Shin-Osaka: ~3h 30m; from Kyoto: ~3h. From Nagoya, two options: Tokaido Shinkansen via Tokyo (~3h 15m) or Limited Express Shinano via Nagano (~3h 30m, more scenic). From Takayama, the JR Hida limited express runs to Toyama in ~1h 30m through the Hida mountains.

By air, Toyama Kitokito Airport (TOY)富山きときと空港

~20 min by airport bus to Toyama Station

The regional airport, “Kitokito” is the Toyama dialect word for “fresh, lively”, named in honour of the seafood culture. Daily ANA flights from Tokyo Haneda (HND) → Toyama, ~55 min. Seasonal services from Taipei (TPE) and Seoul (ICN).

From the airport: airport bus to Toyama Station ~20 min, ~¥420; taxi ~30 min, ~¥3,500; rental car desks at the airport (compare rates on Rakuten Travel). From Tokyo, the Shinkansen is typically faster door-to-door, flying makes more sense from Sapporo, Fukuoka, or further origins.

Night bus from Tokyo夜行バス

Shinjuku → Toyama, overnight

Highway buses run overnight from Tokyo (Shinjuku) to Toyama for around ¥5,000–¥9,000, significantly cheaper than the Shinkansen. Journey ~7–8 hours. Best for budget travellers willing to lose a night’s sleep.

Also useful as a backup if Shinkansen reservations are sold out during peak periods.

Toyama City Tram

¥220 per ride · ¥650 day pass

Japan’s most thoughtfully redesigned tram network. Centram (Loop) circulates the city core; North–South Line reaches the university and Iwase Port; Toyama Light Rail extends to Iwase. Day pass pays for itself with three rides.

Ainokaze Toyama Railway

~¥200–¥900 per leg

Third-sector railway running east–west along the coast, replaced JR Hokuriku Main Line. Toyama → Takaoka 20 min ¥370; Namerikawa 15 min ¥390 (firefly squid); Uozu 25 min; Kurobe / Nyuzen 40 min. Not covered by JR Pass.

Toyama Chiho Railway (Chitetsu)

~¥1,880 to Unazuki

Charming old-style local railway. Main Line: Toyama → Unazuki Onsen ~1h 40m, ¥1,880, with retro rolling stock. Also Fujikoshi and Kamidaki Lines for Tateyama access. Not covered by JR Pass.

Manyo Line tram

~25 min Takaoka → port

Small interurban tram from Takaoka to Shinminato Kitokito Market and Etchū-Nakada. Runs the Doraemon Tram on select days.

15–30 min from Takaoka

Small JR line along the Toyama Bay shore, Takaoka to Amaharashi (15 min) and Himi (30 min). Scenic. Covered by JR Pass and Hokuriku Arch Pass.

Takaoka → Tonami ~20 min

From Takaoka via Shin-Takaoka to Tonami (Tulip Fair) and Johana (Gokayama bus connection). Covered by JR Pass and Hokuriku Arch Pass.

Practical tips

Before you go

Six things first-time visitors usually wish they’d known.

    Reserve oversized luggage online. Since 2020, Shinkansen requires advance reservation for suitcases over 160 cm combined dimensions. Reserve when booking the seat, at the ticket window or online.

    Don’t expect Ainokaze or Chitetsu to be on a JR Pass. They’re third-sector and private. Pay individual fares (¥200–¥900) or use IC cards.

    Toyama City Tourism Centre is at Toyama Station. English support, maps, booking assistance, and the day-pass tram tickets. Excellent first stop on arrival.

    Tateyama Alpine Route closes mid-Nov to mid-Apr. Kurobe Gorge Railway too. Plan winter trips around onsen, Himi kan-buri, Gokayama Light-Up, not the alpine attractions.

    Firefly squid boat tour: book in January. Online reservations open in January each year for the spring tours. Capacity 40, books out fast.
  6. 06
    Coin lockers are concentrated at Toyama Station. Smaller selection at Shin-Takaoka, Takaoka, and Unazuki-Onsen. Book luggage forwarding (Yamato) for multi-stop trips with bulky bags.
