Firefly Squid蛍烏賊

Gather at 1:30 AM, board the sightseeing boat into the dark bay, cruise ~20 minutes to two fixed-net sites. As the fishing crew hauls the net, the squid begin to glow from stress and the dark sea turns electric blue. Fishermen wave the net to trigger glow waves; at the second boat they often cook fresh squid over an open flame and offer passengers a taste.

~50% chance of departure, tours are cancelled if sea conditions are poor. If cancelled you get free admission to the Hotaruika Museum as consolation.

The only museum in the world dedicated to a single squid species. From 20 March to 31 May, the live theatre lets staff shake a tank of live squid for visitors, they emit their blue glow in unison. Off-season the show substitutes bioluminescent plankton and other deep-sea light-emitting creatures.

Other exhibits: Spring of Deep Sea Wonders (touch tank with deep-sea creatures), excellent English signage on lifecycle and ecology, the squid mascot Kirarin, and a museum restaurant serving batter-fried squid, squid pizza, squid tempura, and squid curry during season.

Five canonical preparations:

1. Boiled with spicy miso (酢味噌 / sumiso), the classic Toyama bar snack. 2. Sashimi (nama hotaruika), raw, but must be frozen first to kill parasites; rich, creamy, slightly sweet. 3. Okizuke (沖漬け), pickled in soy sauce and sake; bar-food staple. 4. Tempura, whole squid in light batter. 5. Pasta / aglio e olio, Italian restaurants in Toyama feature hotaruika peperoncino in spring.

April is the “peak Toyama month”, a single trip can chain several spring phenomena. Add:

Shiroebi (white shrimp, peak Apr–Jun), cherry blossoms at Matsukawa River and Castle Park, Asahi Funakawa Spring Quartet (early April), Tonami Tulip Fair (late April–early May), Nyuzen Flower Road, and Yuki no Otani snow walls at Tateyama opening mid-April. Build a 3–5 day itinerary around these.
