In brief

Uozu (魚津) is 25 minutes and ¥600 from Toyama Station on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway. Spring mirages show mainly from mid-March to early June, on warm calm days, and cannot be booked. The sure things are the Buried Forest Museum (¥640, 9:00–17:00) and the aquarium (¥1,000, closed Mondays from 1 December to 15 March). The Tatemon Festival is the first Friday and Saturday of August.

Come for the mirage, stay for the museums

A mirage makes distant things look different: stretched, or turned upside down. Over Toyama Bay it happens when warm air lies over cold water, and Uozu is the town best known for it. The prefecture’s guide counts about 20 appearances a season between late March and early June, and local lore says seeing one brings luck.

The rest of Uozu works whatever the weather. Cedar stumps that were buried 2,000 years ago stand in a water-filled hall, an aquarium that opened over a century ago shows the fish of the bay, and the station has two of the best sushi counters in the prefecture. This page sets out the hours, the fares and the closed days, since the mirage itself is not on a timetable.

What to see

A mirage, a forest, an aquarium and a festival

The first two cards are the weather-dependent part. The museum and the aquarium work in any weather and any month.

The mirage: where and when蜃気楼

Shinkiro Road, Uozu Port to Kyōden · viewing point and museum deck

Mirages show over Toyama Bay from mid-March to early June, most often in April and May. On a good day a layer of warm air over cold water bends the light and the far shore looks stretched or turned upside down. Seeing one is said to bring good luck.

Watch from the designated viewing point on Shinkiro Road (しんきろうロード), the coast road from Uozu Port toward Kyōden, from the observation deck at the Buried Forest Museum, or from the car park at Umi-no-Eki Shinkiro (海の駅 蜃気楼). The usual window is late morning to about 16:00 on a warm, clear, calm day, with air above about 18 °C. Uozu city posts a forecast, and the museum’s website links live cameras.

Appearances are not guaranteed

The numbers differ by source. The prefecture’s guide counts about 20 appearances along the Uozu coast in a season; tourism media say only about five a year are clear to the naked eye. Treat a mirage as a bonus. This one was photographed in winter, so spring is the main season but not the only one.

If you want to see the phenomenon whatever the weather, the High-Vision Theater at the Buried Forest Museum shows mirage footage on a 300-inch screen: two 10-minute films every 30 minutes, with English subtitles on request.

Tatemon Festivalたてもん祭り

Suwa Shrine and the streets around it · first Friday and Saturday of August

Seven tatemon, poles about 16 m high hung with lanterns (90 on each, in the prefecture’s guide), are pulled through town to pray for a good catch and safe sailing. It is on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. In 2026 it was on 7 and 8 August, with evening hours of about 20:30–23:00 and a sea fireworks display on the 8th. It falls on the first Friday and Saturday of August, so expect 6 and 7 August 2027; confirm with the Uozu Chamber of Commerce (0765-22-1200). Rain cancels.

Practical tips

Before you go

Five things to know before you plan around the mirage.

  1. 01
Do not build the trip around the mirage. It can appear for minutes or hours and may not appear at all. Pair it with the museum and the aquarium, both of which work in rain.
  2. 02
Check the closing days. The aquarium shuts on Mondays from 1 December to 15 March, the museum on Thursdays from 15 December to March, and both around New Year.
  3. 03
Book the Tatemon weekend early. Rooms in Uozu and Toyama fill, and rain cancels the festival. Expect 6 and 7 August 2027.
  4. 04
Book dinner at Daimon or Tasuke. Both take reservations only, and Daimon is closed on Mondays. Details are on the sushi page.
  5. 05
Check the Uozu Station name. The Ainokaze station is the one for the museum; Dentetsu-Uozu is a different station on the Toyama Chitetsu line.

Uozu, answered

Can you see the Uozu mirage, and when is the best time?

Mirages appear over Toyama Bay mainly from mid-March to early June, most often in April and May, on warm clear days with a calm sea, from late morning to about 16:00. They cannot be guaranteed: the prefecture counts about 20 appearances a season, but only some are clear to the naked eye.

Where is the best place to see the Uozu mirage?

How do I get to Uozu from Toyama?

Take the Ainokaze Toyama Railway local train from Toyama Station to Uozu Station: 25 minutes, ¥600. The museum is 5 minutes by car and the aquarium 10 minutes by car from the station. The JR Pass does not cover the line.
