Shōmyō Falls称名滝
The drop is 350 m in four tiers: 70, 58, 96 and 126 m from the top. The plunge pool is about 60 m across and 6 m deep. The viewpoint (滝見台) is at the end of the walk. The photo shows the falls from a distance in autumn colour.
Oct–NovShōmyō Falls drops 350 m in four tiers into a gorge above Tateyama Station. A bus covers 7 km of the way, then it is a 30 minute walk. The slimmer Hannoki Falls, taller still, appears with the snowmelt.
In 2026 the walkway to the viewpoint opened on 28 April and the Shōmyō Falls bus runs 11 May – 10 November, six departures a day, ¥500 one way. A bear injured a visitor on the walkway on 14 May 2026; the town installed high-frequency bear deterrents at three points on 17 June. The road shuts in heavy rain. Autumn colour comes here in early November, after the Alpine Route's peak.
Shōmyō Falls (称名滝) drops 350 m in four tiers, the tallest waterfall in Japan that flows all year. From Tateyama Station take the Shōmyō bus (15 min, ¥500 one way, 6 departures 8:30–15:10 in 2026), then walk 1.3 km, about 30 min, to the Takimi-dai viewpoint. Hannoki Falls (ハンノキ滝), about 500 m, runs beside it only in the snowmelt. The walkway opens in late April and the bus stops on 10 November. It pairs with the Alpine Route: do the falls first.
The Shōmyō River, fed from the Tateyama mountains, drops into a narrow gorge cut in welded tuff. The falls are a national Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, and appear on the lists of Japan's 100 Waterfalls (日本の滝百選) and 100 Soundscapes (日本の音風景100選); they are sometimes counted among Japan's three great waterfalls. The name is said to come from Hōnen, who heard the roar as the chant 称名念仏, Namu Amida Butsu.
It is one of the easiest big sights in Toyama to add to a Tateyama day: the Chiho Railway to Tateyama takes about 65 minutes, and the same station is where the Alpine Route starts. For that side, see Murodō and tickets.

A maintained path follows the gorge with the river beside it and bridges over the water. The road to the car park is a separate stretch with a gate, and the walkway is a public path, not a ticketed attraction: no entry fee is listed. E-bikes, electric kick scooters and folding electric carts can be rented at the Tateyama tourist information office in front of the station. See the Tateyama Town tourism association for prices.
Hannoki Falls drops 497 m, usually rounded to 500 m, which is taller than Shōmyō but not always there. It runs when snowmelt feeds it, and it joins Shōmyō to make a V shape. In the highest flows a third fall, Sōmen Falls, appears to its right. Because it is intermittent it does not count as Japan's tallest. In winter it freezes into an ice fall that climbers attempt; NHK filmed the first solo climb in 2021.
About 100,000 years ago the falls stood roughly 15 km downstream, near Omi (小見). The river has cut back through the tuff by about 10 cm a year, leaving the steep Akujō-no-kabe (悪城の壁) on the way. In 1945 a power company cut an intake into the cliff beside the third tier; the war ended and the dig was abandoned, and the scar is still there. In 2020 the Tateyama Caldera Sabo Museum reported a fifth step forming at the foot, which began around 2005.
Shōmyō can also be seen across the valley from the Alpine Route side, as in this July 2010 photo, but at that distance it is small and hard to read. The walk is what takes you to its foot.
The bus is the practical way. This is the operator's 2026 timetable dated 15 April 2026; the season is planned as 11 May – 10 November.
| Up bus from Tateyama Station | Arrives at the falls | Return that works | Back at the station | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8:30 | 8:45 | 10:00 | 10:15 | Earliest start; leaves time for the Alpine Route afterwards |
| 9:30 | 9:45 | 11:00 | 11:15 | |
| 10:30 | 10:45 | 13:10 | 13:25 | The 11:00 return is too early for the walk |
| 12:40 | 12:55 | 14:40 | 14:55 | |
| 14:10 | 14:25 | 15:30 | 15:45 | Tight: 65 minutes for a 60 minute round walk |
| 15:10 | 15:25 | None | None | The last return, 15:30, leaves 5 minutes after arrival |
All return departures from the falls are 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 13:10, 14:40 and 15:30. Fare ¥500 adult, ¥250 child, one way. The bus stops in rainfall regulation or heavy traffic. The "return that works" column is my arithmetic: 30 minutes each way plus 15 at the viewpoint is about 75 minutes.
| How | Time and cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Chiho Railway to Tateyama | About 65 min, ¥1,420 from Dentetsu-Toyama | The same station as the Alpine Route. The Super Tateyama limited express adds ¥1,000 from 15 April 2026. |
| Bus from Tateyama Station | 15 min, ¥500 one way | 7.1 km up the Shōmyō road to the car park, six departures a day. |
| Car | Gate at Katsuradai, then the car park | Gate open 7:00–18:00 in April–June and September–November, 6:00–19:00 in July and August. It is locked outside those hours. Set the sat nav to 称名平駐車場. |
| Walking from the station | Not practical | The road to the car park is 7.1 km before the 1.3 km walk, so use the bus or a rental. |
The walk is short, but the valley is a bear area and a closed road in heavy rain.
The 8:30 bus is easy from Toyama on the Chiho Railway, so a Toyama night works. Sleep in Tateyama if you want the falls and the first cable car in one morning. Hotel Tateyama at Murodō closed to overnight guests on 31 August 2026; the lodges are on the Murodō page.
A hotel near Tateyama Station, so the 8:30 falls bus and the 7:00 first cable car are a short step away. The operator lists it among the stays whose guests can forward luggage across the mountain.
A hotel in Arimine, Tateyama town, listed by the Alpine Route operator among the stays around Tateyama Station. A base for the falls, the cable car and an early start.
Opened in 2022 on the upper floors of the JR Toyama Station building, run by JR West Hotels. Upper floors face Tateyama or the city, and Dentetsu-Toyama is a short walk away for the Chiho Railway.
Yes for a waterfall that flows all year: 350 m in four tiers (70, 58, 96 and 126 m). Hannoki Falls (ハンノキ滝), which runs beside it, is about 500 m (497 m measured) and taller, but it only flows with the snowmelt, so it is not normally counted as Japan's tallest.
Take the Toyama Chiho Railway from Dentetsu-Toyama to Tateyama (about 65 minutes, ¥1,420). From the station front take the Shōmyō Falls bus (15 minutes, ¥500 adult, ¥250 child, one way), then walk 1.3 km, about 30 minutes, to the Takimi-dai viewpoint. By car, set the sat nav to the Shōmyōdaira car park (称名平駐車場), not 'Shōmyō Falls', which can route you wrongly.
In 2026 the walkway from the Katsuradai gate to the viewpoint opened on 28 April and the bus runs 11 May – 10 November, six departures a day. Everything stops in heavy rain, and the road closes for winter. The 2027 dates are not announced (checked 14 October 2026); plan for late April to early November.
The walk from the car park to the viewpoint is 1.3 km, about 30 minutes each way. With 15 minutes at the viewpoint you need about 75 minutes, so the 8:30 bus (back on the 10:00), the 9:30 (back on 11:00), the 10:30 (back on 13:10) and the 12:40 (back on 14:40) work. The 14:10 up leaves only 65 minutes before the last bus down at 15:30, and the 15:10 up cannot make it.
In the snowmelt season, roughly spring into early summer, when it appears to the right of Shōmyō and the two make a V shape. In the highest flows a third fall, Sōmen Falls (ソーメン滝), appears further right. At other times only Shōmyō is running. Hannoki is also climbed as a frozen fall in winter, when the road is closed.
May and June for snowmelt volume and Hannoki Falls, or early November for colour: the colour reaches Tateyama Station and Shōmyō Falls then, with the bus running to 10 November. July and August are green and warm, and the gate hours are longest. Combine it with the Alpine Route by doing the falls first on an early bus.
