Morning markets朝市

Oct–NovA merchant town in a mountain basin: preserved streets, two morning markets, sake breweries and Hida beef, all within a kilometre of the station.
Takayama is 2h 15m from Kanazawa by reserved bus (¥4,200) and about 1h 30m from Toyama on the Hida limited express (¥3,420 reserved). Give it one full day and two nights. See the markets and the old town before 10:00, when the day visitors arrive, and use a second day for Hida-Furukawa or Shirakawa-go.
A town of timber merchants in the mountains, not a temple city: dark wooden shopfronts, cedar balls over sake-shop doors and food from the hills. From Toyama it works as a day trip. From Kanazawa it does not (2h 15m each way), so cross once and stay. Kanazawa or Takayama? compares the two, and the crossing guide puts Shirakawa-go in the middle.
One way, 2026. There is no railway over the mountains from Kanazawa.

Built in 1692 as the shogunate's office for the Hida region and used as a prefectural office until 1969. It is the only magistrate's office in Japan whose main buildings survive, with tatami offices and a large rice storehouse. Open 8:45 to 17:00 from April to October, to 16:30 from November to March; last entry 30 minutes before.
Kami-Sannomachi, Kami-Ninomachi and Kami-Ichinomachi are the three main preserved streets: latticed merchant houses, sake shops and craft shops. They are crowded from 10:00 to 16:00 and nearly empty in the evening.
Try Hida beef as nigiri, skewers or a grill lunch, and hōba miso cooked on a leaf. Seven sake breweries stand close together in the old town; a cedar ball (sugidama) over the door means the new sake is ready. At Harada Shuzo you can taste more than ten kinds and keep the cup.
Sannō Matsuri, 14–15 April: 12 floats, with a night procession on the 14th, about 100 lanterns on each. Hachiman Matsuri, 9–10 October: the autumn festival. Both are on UNESCO's list (2016). The Festival Floats Exhibition Hall shows them all year (¥1,000). Next: 14–15 April and 9–10 October 2027.
