In brief

Pick Kanazawa if you are travelling by rail between Tokyo and Kyoto: it is on the line, it is a real city with two days of sights, and it needs no detour. Pick Takayama if you want a small mountain town and are coming from Nagoya or heading to Matsumoto. With four days, do both and cross between them through Shirakawa-go.

The difference in one line each

Kanazawa is what a rich feudal city looks like when it was never bombed: a garden, a castle park, three teahouse districts, a samurai quarter and serious museums, spread across a city you cross by bus. Takayama is a merchant town in a mountain basin: six or seven preserved streets, two morning markets, sake breweries and Hida beef, all on foot, done by lunchtime.

What I would do with your days

01

Two days: Kanazawa only2日

On the Tokyo–Kyoto rail route

Do not spend half of a two-day stop on buses. Kanazawa, with a morning at Kenrokuen and an evening in Higashi Chaya. Kanazawa in 1, 2 or 3 days.

Add
Shirakawa-go day trip if 3 days
02

Four days: both, one-way4日

Kanazawa 2 nights → Shirakawa-go → Takayama 2 nights

The classic. Cross once, with the village as the break. Leave by Hida train to Nagoya or Toyama. The crossing, step by step.

03

Any length: the quieter version静かな北陸

Toyama, Takaoka, Gokayama

If the reason you are asking is crowds, neither is the answer at midday. Base in Toyama: Takayama is a 90-minute day trip, Kanazawa 20 minutes, and Gokayama gives you the thatched villages without the coaches. Takaoka has the merchant streets and the temple with nobody in them.

FAQ

Kanazawa or Takayama, answered

Is Kanazawa or Takayama better?

Kanazawa is better for travellers on the Tokyo to Kyoto rail route and for anyone who wants gardens, museums and food over two days. Takayama is better for a compact old town in the mountains. With four days, visit both.

How far is Kanazawa from Takayama?

2 hours 15 minutes by direct highway bus (¥4,200), or 1h 15m to Shirakawa-go and 50 minutes on to Takayama with a stop.

Which is better for visiting Shirakawa-go?

Takayama is closer at 50 minutes; Kanazawa is 1h 15m. The best plan is to visit Shirakawa-go on the way between the two.

Is Takayama worth it if I have been to Kyoto?

Yes. It is a merchant town, not a temple city, and feels very different: wooden shopfronts, sake breweries and mountain food.

Which is less crowded?

Neither at midday in peak season. Takayama empties in the evening. For fewer people overall, add Toyama, Takaoka or Gokayama.
