In brief

The 2027 Shirakawa-go light-up is on 11, 17, 24 and 31 January, 17:30 to 19:30. You cannot turn up. Entry is limited to people with one of five reservations: a room in the village, a reserved car-park space (by car or taxi), or a seat on a light-up bus run by a bus company or a tour operator. From Kanazawa the Hokutetsu bus costs ¥18,500 and goes on sale at 14:00 on 13 October for the first night.

What happens if you have no reservation

You can still visit by day. On light-up days the ordinary car parks take their last cars at 15:00 and everyone without an event ticket must be out by 17:00. No scheduled route bus runs back after the event, so a daytime bus ticket does not get you into the evening.

On the night

What to bring and expect

Two hours outdoors at −10 to 0°C.

  1. 01
Dress for standing still. Insulated boots with grip, a down layer, hat, gloves, hand warmers. The paths are packed snow and ice.
  2. 02
Bring a torch. Lanes between the houses are dark, and that is the point.
  3. 03
The viewpoint is ticketed separately. Only holders of a deck ticket (a lodging plan that includes one, or a bus tour that includes one) can go up. The deck is split into three viewing groups and you cannot choose the slot. Tripods are banned there, and so are pets. It is a 15–20 minute walk each way from the village, and heavy snow can close it. The village lanes need no ticket beyond entry.
  4. 04
Eat before you go. Most village restaurants close in the afternoon.
  5. 05
Snow can disrupt it. Heavy snow can delay or stop the expressway buses. Leave slack the next morning.

Where to stay for the light-up

A room in Ogimachi is the best seat and the hardest to get: a lottery (1–31 October), results by 10 November, then a first-come window at 13:00 on 26 November for rooms that were declined or cancelled. Everyone else sleeps in a city and rides the light-up bus. No scheduled route bus runs back after the event (on ordinary days the last one leaves in the late afternoon), so book the bus before the hotel and pick a hotel near where it leaves. Light-up nights fill up, so reserve a refundable room early.

FAQ

Shirakawa-go light-up 2027, answered

Do I need a reservation for the Shirakawa-go light-up?

Yes. Entry is by advance reservation only: a village lodging booking, a reserved car-park space, or a seat on a light-up bus or tour. Walk-ins are turned away.

How do I book the light-up bus from Kanazawa?

Hokutetsu sells seats online and by phone from 14:00 on 13 October (for 11 January), 19 October, 26 October and 2 November 2026. The fare is ¥18,500 for adults and includes an observation deck ticket.
