Kenrokuen兼六園

The two-legged stone lantern that's basically the symbol of Kanazawa itself. One leg short, resting on a rock; the other long, standing in the shallow water of Kasumigaike Pond. The asymmetry is the point, imperfect balance creating a haunting beauty.

The most-photographed spot in the garden, expect crowds. Best in soft afternoon light, or in winter when the yukitsuri ropes frame the scene.

The most spectacular tree in the garden. A black pine grown from seeds the 13th Maeda lord Naritaka brought from Karasaki on Lake Biwa. Its branches stretch out over Kasumigaike and reflect on the water surface.

Each November, the yukitsuri (雪吊り) conical rope-and-bamboo support is built around it to brace the branches against snow weight. Installed Nov 1, removed mid-March. The image of yukitsuri-on-Karasaki-Pine over Kasumigaike Pond is Kanazawa's winter postcard.

The insider tip few visitors know about. The garden is free to enter before regular opening hours via designated gates. Hours by season:

Mar: 5:00–6:45 · Apr–Aug: 4:00–6:45 · Sep–Oct 15: 5:00–6:45 · Oct 16–31: 5:00–7:45 · Nov–end Feb: 6:00–7:45.

You must exit 15 min before regular opening. Genuinely empty, peaceful, the best photographic light of the day. Especially recommended in summer (avoid heat + crowds) and in winter for the snow.

The two were originally one estate, Kenrokuen was the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle until the Meiji separation. The Maeda clan built the castle in 1583; most original structures burned through the centuries.

Don't miss the Ishikawa-mon Gate (Important Cultural Property, original 1788), the faithfully reconstructed 2001 Hishi-yagura turret + Gojikken Nagaya storehouse + Hashizume-mon (¥320 to enter), the Gyokusen-immaru Garden reconstructed in 2015, and the Stone Wall Walk with 30+ varieties of stone-fitting techniques.
