Kanazawa is compact, most major sights sit within a 4-km radius around Kanazawa Station, and you'll mostly rely on the Castle Town Loop Bus or your feet rather than long taxi rides. Things worth knowing

Five practical points that save first-time visitors money or stress.

    Peak seasons sell out months ahead. Cherry-blossom week (early April), 3+ months. Autumn foliage (mid-November), 2+ months. Snow-crab season (Dec–Feb weekends), 1–2 months. Hyakumangoku Matsuri (first weekend of June), 4+ months. Mid-week stays open up at the last minute.
  2. 02
    The Kenrokuen pre-opening trick. Garden is free before regular hours from designated gates (4:00 AM in summer). Stay near the Kenrokuen edge, First Hotel, Camellia, or Hakuchoro Sanraku, to actually use it.
  3. 03
    Free shuttles you might miss. Hakuchoro Sanraku runs a free shuttle from Kanazawa Station West Exit. Yuwaku Sansoy runs a free shuttle with reservation. Both are listed only in Japanese on their booking pages, ask via email if your booking site is in English.
  4. 04
    Tattoo policies vary. Larger chain hotels (Hyatt Centric, Nikko, Dormy Inn) tend to be flexible. Traditional ryokan in Yuwaku may still prohibit. Check at booking, some allow with stickers, some accept day-use only.

    Loop Bus day-pass beats taxis. ¥800 day pass on the Castle Town Loop covers all the major sights. From any Korinbo / Kenrokuen / station hotel you'll never need a taxi between attractions, just the bus.
