The tour

What the guide shows you

Built as a prayer hall for the Maeda lords and fitted like a fortress.

01

A maze behind a plain face妙立寺の仕掛け

Main hall · inside the 40-minute tour

From outside it looks like a two-storey temple. Inside there are four floors across seven levels, 23 rooms and 29 staircases, with hidden stairs, trapdoors, a lookout and a well said to connect to Kanazawa Castle.

The nickname does not mean ninja lived here; it comes from how complicated the building is.

02

Why it was built this way前田家の祈願所

Nomachi, on the Teramachi side of the Sai River

The temple was built in 1643 under Maeda Toshitsune, the third lord of the Kaga domain, and moved from near Kanazawa Castle. It served as a prayer site for the lords and as an outpost-like fortress among the Teramachi temples.

Tall buildings were restricted at the time, which is why a four-floor hall is built to look like two.

Teramachi and Nishi Chaya寺町・にし茶屋街

On foot · about 6 minutes

The temple sits in the Teramachi temple district, on the quieter side of the Sai River. Nishi Chaya, the smallest of Kanazawa's three geisha districts, is about 6 minutes' walk, and its small museum, the Nishi Chaya Shiryōkan, is free.

It is the part of Kanazawa that residents use, not tour groups.

Practical tips

Before you go

Five things to know before you dial.

  1. 01
Phone as soon as your dates are fixed. Bookings open one month ahead and close when the tour is full, and weekends fill first.
  2. 02
Be there 10 minutes early. Entry starts 10 minutes before your time and the tour leaves on schedule. A late booking is cancelled.
  3. 03
Expect Japanese only. The guide speaks Japanese and a companion cannot interpret during the tour. Ask for the English booklet when you phone and read about the building beforehand.
  4. 04
Bring cash and clean socks. Admission is paid in cash at the entrance, you take your shoes off, and photography inside is not allowed.
  5. 05
Use a Monday. The temple is open on Mondays, when the 21st Century Museum and most city museums are closed.
