Oct–NovGarden at opening, museum at your pool slot, samurai streets before the tour buses and the geisha district at dusk. Every sight is 5 to 15 minutes from the next on foot, so the order matters more than the transport.
One day covers the core loop: Omicho, Kenrokuen and the castle, the 21st Century Museum, Nagamachi and Higashi Chaya at dusk. Two days covers the city at an easy pace, one day each side of the river. Three days adds a day trip: Shirakawa-go by bus (1h 15m, ¥2,800 each way), Kaga Onsen or Fukui. Avoid a museum day on a Monday.
Kenrokuen first. It opens at 7:00 from March to mid-October and 8:00 in winter, and tour groups arrive from mid-morning. Book the Swimming Pool at 9:00. The 21st Century Museum releases the underwater slots on the day only, from 9:00; book on your phone wherever you are and turn up at your time. Nagamachi before 11:00, when the tour buses reach Korinbo. Higashi Chaya at dusk, but be inside the teahouses by 16:30: Kaikaro closes at 17:00 and Shima at 17:30.
On a Friday or Saturday the museum's exhibition zone stays open to 20:00, so you can move it to the evening and keep daylight for the gardens.
Starts with breakfast at Omicho, so it suits a night in Kanazawa. Arriving on the first Kagayaki (Tokyo 06:16, Kanazawa 08:43)? Skip breakfast and start at Kenrokuen at 9:00.

Friday or Saturday: Kenrokuen, the castle, Nagamachi, lunch at Omicho, Higashi Chaya 14:30–17:00, then the 21st Century Museum 17:30–20:00 and dinner in Katamachi. Rain: keep Omicho, swap the garden and Nagamachi for the museum cluster (21st Century, D.T. Suzuki, the National Crafts Museum and the Prefectural Museum of Art, all within 10 minutes' walk) and finish indoors at Kaikaro and Shima. Monday: no museums, so add Myōryū-ji, the "Ninja temple" (¥1,200, book by phone on 076-241-0888), and Nishi Chaya before Higashi Chaya at dusk.
Gardens, museums and samurai streets on day 1; the market, crafts and geisha districts on day 2, so the trip ends at dusk in Higashi Chaya. If one of your days is a Monday, make it day 2.

Higashi twice is deliberate: the interiors in the morning without crowds, the streets in the evening for the light. Rain: put all four museums on one day and Kenrokuen and Nagamachi on the drier one; Omicho, Kaikaro, Shima and the workshop all work in rain. Saturday: Castle Park opens free until 21:00 and the Light-up Bus runs from 19:00.
A day-3 tour saves booking the bus a month out, and the rail pass covers the Shinkansen legs if Kanazawa is one stop of several.

Six things that save time on the day.
One day covers the core loop: Omicho, Kenrokuen and the castle, the 21st Century Museum, Nagamachi and Higashi Chaya at dusk. Everything is 5 to 15 minutes apart on foot. You won't have time for the D.T. Suzuki Museum, the crafts museums or a workshop, and on a Monday the museums are shut.
Two days covers the city at a comfortable pace, one day each side of the Asano and Sai rivers. Three days lets you add a day trip: Shirakawa-go by bus (1h 15m, ¥2,800 each way), Kaga Onsen (18 minutes by Shinkansen) or Fukui (23 to 35 minutes).
Walk the core, it's compact: Omicho to Kenrokuen 15 minutes, Kenrokuen to Higashi Chaya 15 minutes, the 21st Century Museum to Kenrokuen 5 minutes. The Loop Bus is ¥220 a ride or ¥800 for a day, runs every 15 to 20 minutes until about 18:00, and pays off from the fourth ride. Buy the day pass at the station bus offices before boarding.
Two nights in Kanazawa and one or two in Takayama is the usual split. Link them by the Shirakawa-go bus: leave Kanazawa in the morning, stop at Shirakawa-go for a few hours and continue to Takayama (Kanazawa to Takayama 2h 15m, ¥4,200). Reserve both legs a month ahead in peak seasons.
Yes. Take the 9:10 bus from the West Exit Bay 4 (arriving 10:35) and the 15:55 back (arriving 17:20). The last bus back is 17:30. Seats are reserved only and cost ¥2,800 each way, with no return discount.
Monday for a museum-heavy day: the 21st Century Museum, D.T. Suzuki and the National Crafts Museum close. Kenrokuen, Nagamachi, Higashi Chaya and Omicho stay open. Many Omicho shops close on Wednesdays, and the market shuts Jan 1 to 4.
One night: by the station, for the train and the luggage. Two: Korinbo, with Nagamachi and dinner on the doorstep. Three: Owari-chō, between Omicho and Higashi Chaya.
