In brief

Book the gold leaf workshop first. Sakuda in Higashi Chaya takes 60 minutes from ¥1,760 and fills its four daily slots in peak weeks. After that: tea ceremony at Gyokusen-en (¥5,000), a geiko show from ¥1,500, and a kimono for the lanes of Higashi Chaya. Most of these are small workshops that take bookings by phone or on their own site; Klook has real listings for tea, kimono, geiko, a gold leaf walk and a sushi class, and we link them where they exist.

What is worth the money

Kanazawa is a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art and makes about 99% of Japan's gold leaf, so a workshop here is with the people who actually do it. The cheap ones (gold leaf, wagashi) cost less than a museum ticket. The dear ones are evenings with geiko and private dinners. If you only have a day, do gold leaf in the morning, tea in the garden at noon and a geiko show or dinner in the evening, all within walking distance of Higashi Chaya. For what to buy afterwards, see the crafts guide.
