In brief

Shiramine (白峰) is a snow-country village in Hakusan City, Ishikawa, about 2 hours from Kanazawa by train and bus (the Hokutetsu bus from Tsurugi takes about 1 hour, ¥1,190). Its old houses are a national preservation district (selected 2012); the Shiramine Onsen Sōyu bath costs ¥750; the Yukidaruma snowman festival is an evening in early February. Weekend buses leave early (last back 14:12), so stay the night. JR passes do not cover the line or the bus.

What to see

Houses, a public bath, snowmen and chestnut mochi

The village is one long street. Allow three hours to walk it, bathe and eat.

Shiramine was selected as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings on 9 July 2012 (10.7 ha, a mountain-village and silkworm-farming district). The landmark is the large headman’s house, the Yamagishi-ke (旧山岸家住宅), with ochre walls and tall narrow windows, designated an Important Cultural Property in 2020. Edo- to Meiji-era houses line the street, and some are now cafés and shops.

A guided 1.5-hour walk costs ¥5,000 for 1–5 people, starts at the Sōyu and must be booked by the evening before with the Hakusan City Tourism Federation (076-259-5893). The Hakusan Foothills folk museum, with old houses moved from the valley, closes in winter.

Tochi-mochi and mountain food栃餅

Shops on the main street

Tochi-mochi is rice cake pounded with horse chestnut, bitter at the edge and sweet with red-bean paste. A confectioner called Shinsa sells single pieces, and reviewers say it is best eaten the day you buy it. The folk museum holds a mochi-pounding event in December.

The village’s other dishes are oroshi udon, botamochi and kata-dofu, a very firm tofu. Stalls sell them at the snowman festival.

Yukidaruma, the snowman festival雪だるままつり

Evening in early February · free

Shiramine gets over 2 m of snow, nearly 4 m in some winters, and each February residents build snowmen across the village and light them with candles. In 2026 it fell on Friday 6 February: lighting 17:00–21:00, food stalls 16:00–21:00, no through traffic 15:00–21:30. Entry is free; parking is by voluntary contribution.

The 2027 date is not announced. The last scheduled bus leaves hours before the lighting, so book a room: see Where to stay.

Climbing Hakusan白山 別当出合

Bettodeai trailhead · about 19 km past Shiramine

Hakusan is one of Japan’s three sacred mountains. The Ishikawa-side trailhead is Bettodeai, up the mountain road from Shiramine past the Ichinose car park (市ノ瀬). That road usually closes from late November until late May or June, and the summer climbing season is ending as the huts close for the winter.

In 2025 private cars were barred between Ichinose and Bettodeai at busy times, with a shuttle at ¥1,000 each way. A 2025 guide gives about 2 hours for the Hokutetsu climbing bus from Kanazawa Station to Bettodeai. The 2026 shuttle fare and dates were not confirmed.

The Tedori Gorge road手取峡谷

The bus route from Tsurugi

The bus follows the Tedori River up the valley for about an hour, from the plain at Tsurugi into the snow country. The area is part of the Hakusan Tedorigawa UNESCO Global Geopark and the Mount Hakusan Biosphere Reserve, and winter snow in the village exceeds 2 m.

If you have time at Tsurugi, the Shishiku Highland Ropeway (¥500 one way, closed December to March) is a 20 to 40 minute walk from the station.

Practical tips

Before you go

The bus timetable decides the day.

  1. 01
Stay the night. At weekends the last bus back leaves at 14:12. A day trip works best on a weekday, with the 8:20 bus out and the 14:45 or 18:00 back.
  2. 02
Check the holiday timetable. It runs on 13–15 August and 29 December to 3 January, not on the weekday pattern.
  3. 03
Mind the Sōyu’s closed day. Tuesdays, and 31 December and 1 January. It opens at noon on weekdays.
  4. 04
Winter needs planning. Snow is over 2 m and the road to Bettodeai is closed from late November. For lift skiing near Hakusan see skiing in Hokuriku.
  5. 05
Autumn is short. The White Road closes on 10 November and the Hakusan huts close for the winter. Colour at lower levels runs into November.
  6. 06
Combine it with Kaga. Shiramine fits a loop with Kaga Onsen and the other Kanazawa day trips, not a rush.
FAQ

Shiramine questions, answered

How do I get from Kanazawa to Shiramine?

Take the IR Ishikawa Railway to Nishi-Kanazawa (3 minutes, ¥220), walk about 100 m to Shin-Nishi-Kanazawa, take the Hokutetsu train to Tsurugi (25 minutes, ¥540), then the Hokutetsu bus marked “Shiramine” (about 1 hour, ¥1,190). On a weekday the 8:20 bus from Tsurugi arrives at 9:14. A few buses run through from Kanazawa Station. By car it is about 1h 30m.

When is the Shiramine Yukidaruma snowman festival in 2027?

The 2027 date had not been announced when this page was checked. The festival is held on one evening in early February: 6 February in 2026 (candle-lit snowmen from 17:00 to 21:00, food stalls from 16:00, free entry), 8 February in 2019 and 2 February in 2018. Ask the Shiramine Tourism Association (076-259-2721).

How much is the Shiramine Onsen Sōyu?

¥750 for adults and ¥360 for elementary school children on current listings (older ones say ¥650–¥670). It is open 12:00–21:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 at weekends and holidays, last entry 30 minutes before closing, and closed on Tuesdays (the next day if a holiday), 31 December and 1 January. It has an open-air bath and a sauna.

Can I climb Mt Hakusan from Shiramine?

Shiramine is the last village on the road to the Ishikawa-side trailhead at Bettodeai (about 19 km on), but you do not climb from the village. The summer climbing season is ending, and the road to Bettodeai usually closes from late November until late May or June. In 2025 private cars were restricted to a ¥1,000 shuttle between Ichinose and Bettodeai at busy times. The 2027 dates and fares come out in spring.

Is the Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road open?

In 2026 it opened on 12 June and is due to close on 10 November, weather permitting. The toll is ¥1,700 for a car, ¥1,400 for a kei car and ¥5,000 for a microbus. Hours are 8:00–17:00, opening at 7:00 from 26 September to 18 October for the morning cloud sea. It is a car road; there is no scheduled bus.

Can I visit Shiramine as a day trip from Kanazawa?

Only just. On a weekday the 8:20 bus from Tsurugi gives about 5 hours in the village before the 14:45 bus back, or you can stay for the 18:00. At weekends the last bus back leaves Shiramine at 14:12, so an evening festival or a bath after dinner means staying the night.
