The pool & the free zone

What you can do without, and with, a ticket

The pool is the headline; the rest of the free zone is worth the walk on its own.

01

The Swimming Pool, from aboveスイミング・プール

Open-air courtyard · seen free from the Public Zone

Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool is a real pool basin with about 10 cm of water on a glass floor, so people standing in the room below look as if they are underwater. From the courtyard you see the water surface and the people beneath it, and that view costs nothing.

The courtyard side can be crowded at weekends; it is calmer on weekday mornings. In rain or when the water is being changed the pool can be closed.

Basement · reserved slot · exhibition ticket needed

To stand in the dry room under the water you reserve a time slot, which opens at 9:00 on the day. Join the waiting list online (airwait.jp) or at the ticket machine at the Honda-dori entrance information desk. No phone bookings and no booking by a third party, and every viewer needs one, children aged about 2 and over included.

Then buy an exhibition ticket for that time. You are emailed and go to the front of Gallery 6; if you are not there within 20 minutes the booking is cancelled, and you can stay in the basement for 5 minutes or less.

Blue Planet Sky and the free worksブルー・プラネット・スカイ

Public Zone · 9:00–22:00

James Turrell's Blue Planet Sky is a square room with a rectangular opening in the ceiling, so the sky is the artwork. On the lawn outside, Olafur Eliasson's rainbow-coloured glass pavilion changes the light as you walk round it.

The free zone also holds the museum's current free exhibitions, a shop and the Fusion21 café-restaurant, and the round glass wall lets you walk through the whole building without a ticket. Check the floor map for which works are in which zone.

Practical tips

Before you go

Six things that decide whether the pool works out.

  1. 01
Be at the museum for 9:00. Pool slots open at 9:00 on the day and weekends sell out fast. Book a slot, then explore the free zone while you wait for the call.
  2. 02
Monday still works. The Exhibition Zone is closed, but the Public Zone is open 9:00–22:00 and you can see the pool from above and the free works. You cannot go down into the pool on Monday.
  3. 03
Come on a Friday or Saturday evening. The Exhibition Zone stays open to 20:00 and the Public Zone to 22:00; the glass building is lit and quiet after dinner.
  4. 04
Skip the pool and you save the ticket. From 31 October the exhibition is ¥1,200. If you only want the pool from above and the free works, you spend nothing.
  5. 05
Plan around the renovation. The museum is due to close from 6 May 2027 to March 2028. The city plans the Kanazawa Machinaka Art Festival around the city centre meanwhile.
  6. 06
Check the date. The museum is closed on a few extra days around holidays: 24 November, 12 January and 23 March, and it was closed on Tuesday 27 October 2026.
