Walk the lanes市場の路地

Ichiba-kan and the covered arcades

Fruit, vegetables, pickles, sweets and souvenirs fill the lanes between the fish shops. It is a market that people still shop in, so keep to one side of the aisle and ask before photographing a stall.

Eating while walking is not allowed. Take your food to the shop's table or a designated rest area; many counters have stand-only seats for this.

Practical tips

Before you go

Five things worth knowing before you queue.

  1. 01
Come between 7:00 and 9:00. The counters that open at 7:00 are serving fish that has just come off the morning auction, and the aisles are clear. By 11:00 the best-known counter has a queue of 30 minutes or more.
  2. 02
Check the day. About a fifth of the shops close on Wednesdays and the whole market closes on 1–4 January. The market is still busy on a Wednesday, but ring the restaurant you want first.
  3. 03
Carry cash. Restaurants mostly accept cards and IC cards, but fish shops are sometimes cash only and Iki-iki-tei takes no cards.
  4. 04
Eat at the shop. Eating while walking is not allowed in the market. Use the shop table, the stand-only counter or a rest area.
  5. 05
Taking fish home? Bring an ice pack or cooler bag. The depachika at Korinbo Daiwa (basement) sells gel packs.
