The museum cluster金沢の美術館

Kanazawa's most popular museum and one of Japan's most-visited contemporary art museums. The building is a circular structure with no clear front or back, designed by SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa), winners of the 2010 Pritzker Prize. The architectural concept: a museum that's open to the city like a park.

The free Communication Zone alone is worth the trip, Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool from above (paid ticket gets you the underwater view from below), James Turrell's Blue Planet Sky (a square cut from the ceiling perfectly framing the sky, the sky is the artwork), Florian Claar's outdoor sound pipes, and Iwasaki Kazuhiko's giant rabbit chair. Restaurant Fusion 21 inside the museum does buffet-style modern Kaga lunch.

One of Japan's most beautiful contemporary buildings, and a meditation on the philosophy of Daisetsu Teitarō Suzuki (1870–1966), the Kanazawa-born Buddhist scholar who introduced Zen to the Western world. Designed by Yoshio Taniguchi (architect of MoMA's 2004 redesign); opened 2011.

Three buildings (Reception, Exhibition, Contemplation) connected by outer corridors and a central "Water Mirror Garden". The Contemplation Space is a small empty room overlooking the water. Visitors sit, watch ripples, and think. The architecture enacts Suzuki's Zen philosophy rather than explaining it. Best on a quiet rainy weekday, mid-morning, when the water mirror reflects the muted sky.

Relocated from Tokyo in October 2020, moved from Kitanomaru Park to take advantage of Kanazawa's craft heritage. Officially the National Crafts Section of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. A major identity moment for Kanazawa as a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts.

Modern and contemporary Japanese crafts: ceramics, lacquerware, dyeing, metalwork, glass. National Living Treasure (人間国宝) works are featured prominently. The relocated Meiji-period building (former Imperial Army headquarters) is itself a treasure. Rotating special exhibitions in wood/textile/metal sections.

The headline museum for classical Ishikawa art, particularly Kutani-yaki ceramics. Holds Japan's National Treasure "Pheasant" (色絵雉香炉), a 17th-century Ko-Kutani porcelain incense burner by Nonomura Ninsei, one of Japan's most famous ceramics, full stop. A wide Ko-Kutani collection (the original 1660s Kutani before the kiln went mysteriously silent for 100 years) gives context.

Modern Ishikawa-born artists in painting, kimono, and lacquerware fill out the rotating exhibitions. Inside the museum: Patisserie Le Musée de H, a famous café-pâtisserie. Even if you skip the museum, the desserts are worth the walk.
