In brief

The Michelin Guide Hokuriku 2021 starred 39 restaurants in Ishikawa, most of them in Kanazawa, and gave its only three stars that year to Ryōri Komatsu. Lunch kaiseki (a multi-course dinner) starts at ¥9,900 at Kyomi Kai, Kataori runs ¥40,000 and up, and a market kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) is ¥1,200–¥2,500. Book the top tables before you land.

The tables worth a night sit in five places: Higashi Chaya and Kazuemachi, Ōmichō, Katamachi, Nomachi and the station. Every area below ends with somewhere to sleep.

Kanazawa packs its fine dining into one city

I live in Hokuriku, and what I tell people about Kanazawa is how much serious cooking there is for one compact city: kaiseki rooms, Edomae (Tokyo-style) sushi counters, tempura and French within a short taxi ride of each other. By food I mean all of it. A ¥1,200 mini kaisendon at 7:00 in Ōmichō Market is as much Kanazawa as a ¥40,000 kaiseki, and both are below. When you want more, Toyama is 18–23 minutes away by Shinkansen: see where to eat in Toyama.

I checked these places on 14 October 2026. Hyakumeiten are Tabelog’s yearly “100 best” lists by cuisine and region. Prices are price bands unless a course price is given, and a band is not a menu: for the top tables reviewers report more. Hours and closed days change, so confirm each when you book. If you are weighing Kanazawa against Kyoto for food, the Hokuriku-instead-of-Kyoto page says it straight: Hokuriku wins on seafood, Kyoto has far more places to eat late.

Michelin facts on this page come from the Michelin Guide Hokuriku 2021 special edition (347 restaurants across Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui), the latest edition I found, so read “starred” as “starred in 2021”. I call a place starred only where I could confirm it. For the rest of the region see the Hokuriku food guide; for the Toyama counters, best sushi in Toyama; for a day plan, the Kanazawa itinerary; and for a base, where to stay in Kanazawa and the Kanazawa guide.

Higashi Chaya, Kazuemachi and Hikosan

Higashi Chaya and Kazuemachi: kaiseki by the river

The tea-house quarters are for lanterns and geiko (Kanazawa’s geisha; see Higashi Chaya), but the cooking is a few streets away: Kataori in Namiki-chō, Kyomi Kai on the Higashiyama slope and two small rooms in Hikosan-machi. Take the bus to Hashiba-chō, about 10 minutes from Kanazawa Station, and walk.

Katamachi and Kōrinbo

Katamachi and Kōrinbo: oden, sushi and tempura after dark

Katamachi is the neon, Kōrinbo the department stores, and the lanes between them (Kimachi, Ikeda-machi) are where the sushi and tempura counters sit. It is also the best place to walk home from dinner: the three entries below are within a few minutes of each other.

Akadama Honten金澤おでん 赤玉本店 · あかだま

Katamachi 2-21-2 · on the corner of the Katamachi scramble · oden since 1927

Kanazawa oden is not the convenience-store kind: kurumafu (wheel-shaped wheat gluten) soaking up the broth, the red-edged fish-cake roll, daikon and egg. Akadama is on the Katamachi scramble, with 75 seats over two floors, oden from ¥130 a piece and a typical bill of about ¥3,000. From 6 November to 29 December counters add kani-men, the female crab’s shell packed with meat and roe; I could not confirm Akadama’s own start date, so ask before you sit.

Tuesday to Friday 16:00–22:00, Saturday from 15:00, Sunday and holidays 15:00–21:00 (last order 30 minutes before closing). Closed Mondays. It may be cash only, so pay in cash.

A food weekend

Two nights, three days of eating in Kanazawa

A Friday to Sunday plan built around the closed days above, on any weekend from 6 November, when snow crab opens, to 29 December, when the female crab ends. The Kagayaki from Tokyo takes about 2h 24m, and the Hokuriku Arch Pass covers it. If you want more, Toyama is 18–23 minutes away by Shinkansen: see where to eat in Toyama.

Booking

Booking Kanazawa from abroad

Six things that decide if you get a table.

  1. 01
Book online, and early. Kataori, Komatsu Yasuke, Sushi Kibatani, Respiración, Tempura Koizumi and Hirayama all list online booking, and Kyomi Kai takes Tabelog or TableCheck. New guests at Otome Sushi can book two months ahead, and Kifune opens each month’s bookings on the 1st at 10:00. Several phone lines were closed outside Japanese hours when I checked, so use the web form.
  2. 02
Use the concierge for phone-only tables. Our Kanazawa food guide names the Hyatt Centric and Hotel Nikko concierges for this. Give the date, party size, allergies and a mobile number you can answer.
  3. 03
Read the cancellation terms. Kyomi Kai may cancel a table not taken within 30 minutes; Tempura Koizumi points to its own site for the fee; course bookings at Akadama cost 100% a head if cancelled after 16:00 the day before. Assume any counter is non-refundable inside two days.
  4. 04
Check the age rules. Kataori takes no children, Budō no Mori Les Tonnelles takes junior-high age and over, MAKINONCÎ’s counter is for ages 12 and up, Kyomi Kai from age 10. Kibatani seats a child who eats the same course; Otome allows children.
  5. 05
Carry cash. Ryōri Komatsu, Iki-iki-tei and Tokkuriya take no cards, and most counters take cards but not e-money. Service of 10% is added at Kataori, Respiración and MAKINONCÎ (5% at Koizumi, 7% at Kyomi Kai, 8% at Kifune).
  6. 06
Say if you are alone. Ryōri Komatsu needs two guests, and single bookings are not accepted at Koide. Counters buy fish for the number booked, so tell them allergies and your arrival time, and phone if you will be late.
FAQ

Eating in Kanazawa, answered

What is the best restaurant in Kanazawa?

On Tabelog on 14 October 2026 the order was Kataori (4.70), Kisanuki (4.57), Respiración (4.45), Komatsu Yasuke (4.29), Hamaguri-zaka Maekawa (4.28) and MAKINONCÎ (4.24). The Michelin Guide Hokuriku 2021 gave its only three stars to Ryōri Komatsu.

How many Michelin-starred restaurants are in Kanazawa?

The Michelin Guide Hokuriku 2021 special edition starred 39 restaurants in Ishikawa, most of them in Kanazawa. Covered here: Ryōri Komatsu (three stars), Kataori, Otome Sushi, Tempura Koizumi, MAKINONCÎ and Respiración (two), and Sushi Kibatani and Hamaguri-zaka Maekawa (one). I found no newer Hokuriku edition, so read “starred” as “starred in 2021”; Toyama had 20.

Where can I eat Kanazawa oden and kani-men?

Akadama Honten in Katamachi (closed Mondays) has served oden since 1927, and Kuroyuri inside the station since 1953. Kani-men, the female crab’s shell packed with meat and roe, is a counter special from 6 November to 29 December; ask each counter whether it has it that day.

Can I eat well in Kanazawa without booking?

Yes. The easy ones are Iki-iki-tei (a queue, not a booking; kaisendon from ¥1,200 from 7:00), Curry no Champion (about ¥800–¥1,500), Ōmichō Shokudō (80 seats) and Kuroyuri, and Menya Tsumiki (ramen from ¥1,650) takes no reservations. For Kataori, Ryōri Komatsu or Respiración, book before you fly.

Can I book these restaurants without Japanese?

Several, yes: Kataori, Komatsu Yasuke, Sushi Kibatani, Respiración and Hirayama list online booking, and Kyomi Kai takes TableCheck. For phone-only tables ask your hotel, and give allergies and a mobile number you can answer.

Is Kanazawa or Toyama better for a food trip?

Do both if you can. Ishikawa had 39 starred restaurants in the 2021 guide and Toyama 20, and Toyama is 18–23 minutes away by Shinkansen. See where to eat in Toyama for Iwase, L’évo and the rest.
