In brief

Natadera (那谷寺) is a cave temple in Komatsu, founded in 717, built into a cliff of pale rock. Entry is ¥1,000, 9:15–16:00 every day, with free parking. Allow 30–40 minutes. Colour peaks about mid-November. From Kaga-Onsen Station the CAN BUS Mountain route takes about 35 min (¥500) and a taxi about 20 min. Michelin gives it one star. It is a quieter autumn alternative to Kyoto: see Kyoto alternatives.

Natadera belongs to the Kaga area but stands just over the line in Komatsu. Its setting, a cliff of white tuff and caves above a pond, is what drew Bashō in 1689, and the red of autumn maples against that white rock is the reason people come in November.

It takes less than an hour, so it pairs well with a stay at nearby Awazu, or with Kaga Onsen and the day trips from Kanazawa.

What to see

Six things at Natadera

01

Kigan Yūsenkyō, the rock garden奇岩遊仙境

Beside the pond · part of general admission

The centre of the temple: a cliff of pale tuff pitted with caves and pinnacles, rising behind a lily pond. A visiting Ōbaku monk gave it its name in the Edo period. In autumn the red maples against the white rock are what the temple itself calls one of Hokuriku's best views of colour. The rock and its setting are a national Place of Scenic Beauty, listed among the landscapes of Oku no Hosomichi.

The monk Taichō founded the temple in 717, enshrining a thousand-armed Kannon in a cave on the mountain, as an outpost of the Hakusan faith; it was first called Iwaya-ji, the cave temple. The caves are treated as a mother's womb, and passing through the rock is a rebirth. In 989 the retired emperor Kazan is said to have renamed it Natadera, joining syllables from Nachi-san and Tanigumi-san, the first and last temples of the Saigoku pilgrimage.

Bashō's haiku芭蕉句碑

A stone beside the rock garden

In 1689 the poet Matsuo Bashō came here on his journey recorded in Oku no Hosomichi and wrote Ishiyama no / ishi yori shiroshi / aki no kaze: the autumn wind is whiter than the rocks of Ishiyama. The pale rock of Natadera is what he saw. A stone carved with the verse stands in the grounds.

The cedar avenue and Maeda's buildings参道・金堂・三重塔

From the gate to the hall

After fires in the wars of the 1500s, Maeda Toshitsune, the third lord of Kaga, rebuilt the temple in 1640–42: the main hall, the Chinese-style gate, the worship hall, the three-storey pagoda, the bell tower and a garden. Seven buildings are Important Cultural Properties. The cedar-lined approach is also from his time. Moss grows thick under the trees.

Special viewing: Shoin and garden特別拝観

Extra ¥200 · resumed 1 September 2026

The special viewing opens the Shoin (study hall) and Kuri (kitchen-house) garden, both nationally protected, with the three standing stones of the Ryūbi-en pond. It adds ¥200 and about 15 minutes, and closes when snow lies. The garden is attributed to the tea master Kobori Enshū's guidance.

Autumn colour and the light-up紅葉

Through November · forecasts on our autumn leaves page

The temple lists foliage for October and November. Usually colour peaks about the middle of November (our forecast is about 14 November). A light-up called NAKED Yozanpo ran on Friday to Sunday evenings and holidays from 3 to 26 October in 2025 (¥2,000 for adults); no 2026 dates had been found on 14 October. Other seasons: cherry blossom and rhododendron in April, hydrangeas in June, rope snow-supports in winter.

Kyoto or Natadera

What each does better

Natadera is not a replacement for Kyoto's autumn; it is a quieter single temple with the same ingredients.

  1. 01
Where Natadera wins. Entry is ¥1,000 with no booking; Kyoto's moss garden Saihō-ji costs about ¥4,000 and must be reserved (Kyoto alternatives). There is free parking for 200 cars.
  2. 02
Where Kyoto wins. Dozens of temples within a day's reach, night openings and a dense transport network. Natadera takes 30–60 minutes, so pair it with Yamashiro or Yamanaka's Kakusenkei gorge.
  3. 03
Timing. Open 9:15–16:00 every day, all year. Michelin gives it one star in its Green Guide.
  4. 04
More autumn. See autumn leaves in Hokuriku for dates across the region.
FAQ

Natadera, answered

How much is Natadera and what are the opening hours?

¥1,000 for adults (junior high and up), ¥300 for elementary school children, free for under-sixes. Open 9:15–16:00 every day of the year. The special viewing (Shoin, garden, three stones) is another ¥200. Parking is free. Allow 30–40 minutes, or about an hour with the special viewing.

When are the autumn leaves at Natadera?

The temple lists colour for October and November, and the peak is usually about the middle of November. Our autumn leaves forecast gives about 14 November for 2026. Check the temple's news page (natadera.com) for the current state.

How do I get to Natadera from Kaga-Onsen Station?

The CAN BUS Mountain route takes about 35 minutes (¥500 a ride, or ¥1,300 for a one-day digital ticket). A taxi is about 20 minutes. By train and bus, take the IR Ishikawa Railway to Awazu and a Hokutetsu Kaga Bus to Natadera, and check the timetable.

Is Natadera a good alternative to Kyoto in autumn?

For one temple and one rock garden, yes. It costs ¥1,000 against Saihō-ji's ¥4,000 and needs no reservation, but it is one temple, not a city of them. From Kyoto it is 1h 39m to Kaga-Onsen (¥6,370) plus the bus. See Kyoto without the crowds.

What is the Bashō haiku at Natadera?

In 1689 Matsuo Bashō wrote ishiyama no ishi yori shiroshi aki no kaze, meaning the autumn wind is whiter than the rocks of Ishiyama, when he saw Natadera's pale rock. A stone with the verse stands in the grounds.

Is there a light-up at Natadera in 2026?

None had been announced on 14 October 2026. In 2025 the NAKED Yozanpo light-up ran on Friday to Sunday evenings and holidays from 3 to 26 October, 17:00–21:00, at ¥2,000 for adults. Check the temple's site before planning around it.
