In brief

Kaga Hashitate (加賀橋立) is a preserved village of Kitamae-bune shipowners, 7.9 km from Kaga-Onsen Station (about 15 min by taxi or car). The Ship Museum is ¥350 (9:00–17:00, daily) and Zorokuen ¥400; lunch is at the working port, where crab runs 6 November to 20 March. Inland, the red-tile charcoal hamlets of Kaga Higashitani are a second national preservation district, reachable only by car or taxi.

The Kitamae-bune (北前船) were the trading ships that sailed between Osaka and Hokkaido along the Sea of Japan from the late Edo period into the Meiji era. Hashitate was not a port of merchants but a shipowner village: the homes of the owners and captains. A register of 1796 names 34 owners and 8 captains. A fire in 1872 destroyed about 60% of the village, and it was rebuilt on a grander scale. When steamships and railways ended sail, many owners moved to Hokkaido and Kobe, leaving the houses.

The 11-hectare district became an Important Preservation District on 27 December 2005. The shipowners' houses are tall two-storey buildings entered from the gable end, roofed in red-brown tile, with walls of reused ship planks. The stone walls and paving are pale blue-green Shakudani stone from Fukui. Because this was a village of owners and captains rather than a port of wholesalers, the houses spread over rolling ground, not along a quay.

FAQ

Hashitate and Higashitani, answered

What is Kaga Hashitate?

Kaga Hashitate (加賀橋立) is a village of Kitamae-bune shipowners on the coast of Kaga, Ishikawa. It became a national preservation district on 27 December 2005, and it forms part of the Kitamae-bune ports Japan Heritage story (2017). At its peak it owned over 100 ships, and in 1916 a magazine called it Japan's richest village.

How much is the Kitamae-bune Ship Museum and when is it open?

¥350 for adults, 9:00–17:00 with last entry at 16:30, open every day. High school students and under are free. Zorokuen, the shipowner's mansion nearby, is ¥400 but closes at irregular times: phone 0761-75-2003 first.

Can I watch the crab auction at Hashitate port?

No. The auction is held in the evening and is not open to visitors. Eat crab at a harbour restaurant or at your inn instead. Male snow crab is in season from 6 November to 20 March.

How do I get to Higashitani without a car?

There is no bus to the hamlets. Take the Hokutetsu bus from Kaga-Onsen to Yamanaka (30–40 min), then a taxi of about 30 minutes to the hamlets; arrange the return pick-up with the driver. A car from Kaga-Onsen takes 20–30 minutes.

Is Hashitate worth a visit from Kanazawa?

Yes if you like old houses and seafood: it is 18 minutes by Shinkansen to Kaga-Onsen plus about 15 minutes by taxi. Allow half a day for the museum, a walk through the village and lunch at the port.
