In brief

Katayamazu Onsen (片山津温泉) is the lake town of Kaga Onsen, 10–15 min by bus from Kaga-Onsen Station (about ¥290). Its Sōyu (¥500, 6:00–22:00) is a glass bathhouse by Taniguchi Yoshio on Lake Shibayama, with two baths that swap sides daily. Nearby are the Nakaya Ukichirō snow museum (¥560), the floating Ukimi-dō hall and, in August, nightly fireworks.

Katayamazu sits on the shore of Lake Shibayama, with the Hakusan range beyond the water. Its spring is a salty chloride water at 72.5°C, and the town is built around the lake rather than a bath square, so the best moments are by the water: an evening bath, dinner, then a walk to Ukimi-dō.

It is the easiest of the three Kaga towns to fit into a half day, and the one with the most going on in summer. The stops below start at the Sōyu.

Four stops by the lake

01

Katayamazu Sōyu, the glass bathhouse片山津温泉総湯

Lake shore, centre of town · 0761-74-0550 · CAN BUS and bus stop 50 m

A glass-walled public bath on the edge of Lake Shibayama, designed by Taniguchi Yoshio (谷口吉生), the architect of the 2004 rebuild of New York's Museum of Modern Art. It opened on 21 April 2012. There are two baths: Kata-no-yu (潟の湯), where the water seems to run on into the lake, and Mori-no-yu (森の湯), facing a green courtyard. They swap between men and women by date: on odd days women have the lake bath, on even days men do.

The source is the town's No. 2 spring: 72°C, about 400 litres a minute, a salty sodium calcium chloride water (pH 6.6). The café upstairs (closed Thursdays) looks over the lake, and the ground-floor shop sells eggs boiled in the spring water at ¥90 each. Closed all day on 15 October 2026 for maintenance.

Ukimi-dō and Lake Shibayama浮御堂・柴山潟

Yu-no-moto Park, centre of town · CAN BUS stop 11

A small floating hall reached by a pier from Yu-no-moto Park. It enshrines the dragon king of the town's founding legend and Benzaiten, and locals call it Uki-uki Benten. It is lit at night. The lake is said to change colour up to seven times with the weather, and on a clear day the Hakusan range stands behind it, snow-capped in winter.

The free Engawa foot bath in nearby Sunahase Park (5:00–24:00) runs on undiluted spring water.

Shiozu-chō · CAN BUS stop 9, about 38 min from the station; route bus about 16 min, then 150 m · 0761-75-3323

Built by Kaga city in the birthplace of Nakaya Ukichirō (1900–1962), the physicist who made the first artificial snow crystals and wrote that snow is a letter sent from heaven. The building is by Isozaki Arata. Experiments show diamond dust and supercooled water, and you can make an ice pendant. It reopened on 4 April 2026 after a year closed for repairs to damage from the 2024 Noto earthquake. The fog effect in the courtyard sculpture has been paused since September 2026; the courtyard itself is open.

Summer fireworks over the lake納涼花火まつり

Lake Shibayama · 0761-74-1123 (tourist association)

In 2026 the fireworks ran every night from 1 to 30 August, at about 21:00 for ten minutes, over the lake. Watching from the shore is free. The pier to Ukimi-dō costs ¥300, and guests at Katayamazu inns get a free ticket at the front desk. Rain cancels them. The 2027 dates are not yet out; the festival normally runs from early to late August. Lanterns go onto the lake on 16 August (¥900 each, booked through the Aizen-ji temple).

The water and the seasons

When to come

Katayamazu works best as a lakeside evening: a bath, dinner, then the water at dusk.

  1. 01
The water. Salty chloride water at 72.5°C. The tourist association notes that it holds heat well. Most inns cool, heat and recirculate it; the Sōyu is the plain way to try it. Ask your inn which baths are free-flowing.
  2. 02
August. Fireworks most nights (2026: 1–30 August), the lantern float on the 16th and, in late August, the Yu no Matsuri bath festival with its mikoshi fights. On 22 August 2026 the mikoshi fight pushed the fireworks back to 21:20.
  3. 03
Winter and crab. Male snow crab runs from 6 November to 20 March, female kōbako to about 29 December (snow crab season). Tokigasane's crab plans are listed with others on the Kaga crab ryokan guide.
  4. 04
Combine it. The CAN BUS Sea route (one way, about 1h 23m for the whole loop) passes Hashitate, then the snow museum, then Katayamazu.
FAQ

Katayamazu Onsen, answered

How much is the Katayamazu Sōyu and what are the hours?

¥500 for adults and children aged 12 and over, ¥150 for ages 6 to 11 and ¥70 for ages 3 to 5. It opens 6:00–22:00 every day apart from occasional maintenance closures (all day on 15 October 2026). The two baths swap between men and women each day.

When are the Katayamazu fireworks?

In 2026 they ran nightly from 1 to 30 August at about 21:00 for ten minutes, over Lake Shibayama, free from the shore and weather permitting. The 2027 dates were not published at the time of checking; the festival normally runs from early to late August.

How do I get from Kaga-Onsen Station to Katayamazu?

By Hokutetsu route bus in about 10–15 minutes for about ¥290, by CAN BUS for ¥500, or by taxi in about 10 minutes. From Kanazawa the Shinkansen to Kaga-Onsen takes 14–19 minutes (¥3,170 reserved).

Is the Nakaya Ukichirō snow museum open again?

Yes. It reopened on 4 April 2026 after closing from 1 April 2025 for repairs to earthquake damage. Entry is ¥560 for adults, 9:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed on Wednesdays unless a public holiday.

Katayamazu or Yamashiro: which Kaga Onsen town should I choose?

Choose Katayamazu for a lake view, a modern bathhouse and the August fireworks. Choose Yamashiro for a walkable bath square with older buildings and museums, or Yamanaka for the gorge walk. The Kaga Onsen guide compares all three.
