Tokyu Stay Hida-Takayama Musubi no Yu
Opened in 2020, with a hot-spring bath and a washer-dryer, microwave and mini kitchen in every room. The practical pick after a week on the road.
Check rates ↗Oct–NovTakayama is small. The station, the bus centre, the old merchant streets and the morning markets all sit within one kilometre, so choose by the kind of night you want, not by location.
Stay near Takayama Station if you arrive or leave by bus (the Nōhi Bus Center for Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa and Matsumoto is next door). Stay in or beside the old town for one special night in a ryokan. Two nights is right: one evening and one full morning for the markets and the Sanmachi streets before the day visitors arrive.
These are places I would send a friend, grouped by area. I have not listed prices because Takayama rates swing three-fold between a January Tuesday and festival week. Each button opens live rates. The festival dates are fixed: 14–15 April and 9–10 October.
| Area | Walk to old town | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Station side (west and east exits) | 10–12 min | Bus connections, newer hotels with rooftop onsen, late arrivals | Less character on the street outside |
| Old town and Miyagawa river | 0–5 min | Ryokan nights, morning markets at the door | Fewer rooms, book early, some stairs and futons |
| Hillside resorts | Shuttle bus | Big baths with a view, families | You depend on the shuttle in the evening |

Two. That gives one evening, one full morning for the markets and old streets before day-trippers arrive, and an afternoon for Hida Folk Village or Hida-Furukawa.
Many mid-range hotels pump hot-spring water to a shared bath, often on the roof. For open-air baths in the mountains, stay in the Okuhida onsen villages an hour away.
During the spring festival on 14–15 April, the autumn festival on 9–10 October, Golden Week, and autumn-leaf weekends. Book three months ahead for those.
