In brief

Nagoya to Shirakawa-go takes about 2h 42m and costs ¥3,600–¥4,700 one way, by date. Buses leave the Meitetsu Bus Center at 07:50, 08:50, 09:20, 09:50 and 15:00 (plus 08:20 from December to March) and every seat is reserved. The last bus back leaves the village at 17:15 and reaches Nagoya at 20:00. Going via Takayama costs ¥8,940 and takes from 3h 27m, so do that only for a night in Takayama.

The bus is the way

Shirakawa-go has no railway, so from Nagoya you choose between one direct bus, a train to Takayama plus a short bus, or a coach tour. The direct bus is faster than the others and costs about half. Gifu Bus, Meitetsu Bus and Hokutetsu run it together on the Tōkai-Hokuriku Expressway, calling at Kakamigahara, Seki, Gujo Hachiman IC and Hirugano Kogen before the Shirakawa-go bus terminal (白川郷バスターミナル) at the edge of Ogimachi (荻町). The 09:50 and 15:00 carry on to Kanazawa: Nagoya to Kanazawa has the train alternative. The rest of this page is the questions people ask before they book: snow, bears, the January light-up and tours. For the whole region from Nagoya, see Nagoya to Hokuriku; for the village itself, Shirakawa-go and the Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go and Takayama bus.

Snow by month

When Shirakawa-go has snow

Reliable cover from late December to late February.

Has it snowed yet? Not this year: on 24 October 2026 the village is in autumn colour, and the first snow normally falls from late November. For the postcard with thatch under snow, go between late December and early March, and book the bus a month ahead because January is when it fills.

MonthAverage snowfallWhat you will see
October0 cmAutumn colour. No snow in the village.
November12 cmA dusting at most. The first flakes arrive in the last weeks; the village is usually bare.
December201 cmSnow arrives and starts to lie. Reliable cover from about Christmas.
January340 cmDeep, fresh snow on every roof. The four light-up evenings are in this month.
February251 cmThe deepest pack, 1–2 metres on the ground. Heavy snow can still delay the bus.
March149 cmSnow lies in the first half and melts through the month.
April19 cmGone from the village.

Average monthly snowfall at the Shirakawa weather station, 1991–2020 (Japan Meteorological Agency); May to September is 0–1 cm. These are averages, so a given year can be early, late or thin. Persistent cover usually runs from late December to late February; mid-January to mid-February is the safest window. Buses run with chains and can be delayed or cancelled in heavy snow, so keep a night of slack on either side from December to February.

Bears

Bears at Shirakawa-go: what happened and what to do

  1. 01
What happened. On 5 October 2025 a Spanish visitor was scratched on the arm by a bear near Wada-ke, at the stop for the observation deck shuttle. The shuttle was suspended and ran again on 7 October; the walkway to the deck stayed closed until 10 October. It was the first injury to a person from a bear in the village since 2014.
  2. 02
The 2025 season. There were about 100 sightings from April 2025, against around 35 in an ordinary year, after a poor beech-nut crop. The village cancelled the autumn light-up (25–26 October and 1–2 November 2025) and put up BEWARE OF BEARS signs.
  3. 03
What has been done. Six bears were trapped near the village and fruit trees that draw them were cut. By April 2026 the village had installed ten Kuma Sonic units, which play a high-pitched sound bears dislike, each covering about 200 metres.
  4. 04
What the village advises. If you meet a bear, stay calm, do not provoke it and leave quietly. The usual guidance in Japan adds: do not run, do not step into the bushes for a photo (the 2025 incident began that way), stay on the village lanes and out of the wooded edges and riverbank at dawn and dusk, and leave no food on the path.
  5. 05
Now. Risk is highest in autumn, before hibernation, in a year when food is short. Bears normally sleep through the winter, so the snow season and the January light-up are the low-risk months. On 24 October 2026 no village notice about bears and no autumn light-up for 2026 were listed; check the village office and Gifu Prefecture's bear information before you go.

Before you board

  1. 01
Book the bus first, then the hotels. Seats open one month ahead and the cheap D and C fares go early. Weekends and the January light-up sell out.
  2. 02
Keep luggage small. Space in the hold is limited and Gifu Bus asks passengers to keep bags small. Forward the big suitcase by takkyubin (宅急便) to your next hotel, or use a Nagoya Station coin locker if you return the same day.
  3. 03
Do not miss it. The bus leaves on time and does not wait at stops. Tickets can be changed or refunded only before the printed departure time.
  4. 04
Bring cash for the village. Lunch shops and the museums often take cash only. Hida beef bowls run about ¥1,800–¥2,500.
  5. 05
Leave slack in winter. From December to February buses run with chains and can be late or cancelled in heavy snow; Gifu Bus phones passengers when it cancels. Do not book a tight Shinkansen the same evening.

FAQ

Nagoya to Shirakawa-go, answered

Is there a direct bus from Nagoya to Shirakawa-go?

Yes. Gifu Bus, Meitetsu Bus and Hokutetsu run a reserved highway bus from the Meitetsu Bus Center beside Nagoya Station to the Shirakawa-go bus terminal. It takes about 2h 42m and costs ¥3,600 to ¥4,700 one way depending on the date. Five buses leave a day (07:50, 08:50, 09:20, 09:50 and 15:00), with an extra 08:20 from December to March.

How do I book the Nagoya to Shirakawa-go bus?

Every seat is reserved. Seats go on sale one month before travel on Highway Bus.com, or by phone to Gifu Bus on 058-201-0489. Book early for weekends, autumn colour and the January light-up. Tickets can be changed before the printed departure time, not after it.

Can I visit Shirakawa-go from Nagoya in a day?

Yes. Take the 08:50 bus (11:32 in the village) and the 15:55 back (Nagoya 18:41) for 4h 23m on the ground. The 07:50 out and the 17:15 back give 6h 43m if a seat is free. The last bus leaves the village at 17:15.

Is there snow at Shirakawa-go?

Reliably from about late December to late February. January (340 cm of snowfall on average) and February (251 cm) are the deepest, with 1 to 2 metres lying. Early December and March are patchy, November is usually bare, and October has no snow.

Are there bears at Shirakawa-go?

In 2025 there were about 100 sightings against around 35 in a normal year, a visitor was scratched near Wada-ke on 5 October 2025, and the autumn light-up was cancelled. The village has since put up sound deterrents and trapped bears. If you see one, stay calm, do not provoke it and leave quietly. Bears hibernate in winter, so the snow season is low risk.

When is the Shirakawa-go light-up in 2027, and can I go from Nagoya?

It is on 11, 17, 24 and 31 January 2027, from 17:30 to 19:30, by reservation only. From Nagoya the practical way is a day tour that includes the light-up (09:00 to 22:30), or a night in Takayama or Kanazawa for their light-up buses. The ordinary direct bus is not enough, because no scheduled bus runs back after the event.
