How crowded is Shirakawa-go, in numbers?
Shirakawa Village recorded 2,083,442 visitors in 2024, of whom 1,114,244 (53.5%) were from overseas, the first year foreign visitors were the majority. In 2023 the count was about 1.72 million (tabi-mag). Almost nobody stays: 34,637 foreign and 48,308 Japanese overnight stays were recorded, about 4% of the visitor count, so the streets are at their fullest between 10:00 and 16:00 and nearly empty after dark.
Nearly half arrive in groups. About 970,000 people (48.4%) came by tour bus in 2024 (Travel Voice). The village has one main road in and out, which is why weekends, holidays and event days produce queues of cars and buses. The peaks are Golden Week, Obon in mid-August, and October to November (Unseen Japan).
The village has responded in three steps. In 2023 it adopted a "responsible tourism" code of five rules (including use the car parks, take litter home and no evening sightseeing by day-trippers). From October 2025 parking rose from ¥1,000 to ¥2,000 for cars and from ¥3,000 to ¥10,000 for tour buses at the three lots nearest the village. From 1 December 2026 tour buses must reserve space at the main gateway bus parking, with bookings open up to 8 months ahead since 1 June 2026. Individual visitors still walk in. Gokayama publishes no matching annual count that I could confirm; its scale is set by houses and buses, below.
