Morning: Kanazawa to the village金沢 → 白川郷
Bags go in the hold. The bus climbs the Tōkai-Hokuriku Expressway through a run of tunnels and comes out in the valley.
Oct–NovThere is no railway through these mountains. A single reserved highway bus links Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go and Takayama, and the classic move is to ride it one way with the village as a four-hour break.
Take a morning bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go (1h 15m, ¥2,800), spend about four hours, then take an afternoon bus on to Takayama (50 minutes). Reserve both seats when booking opens one month ahead. Put your suitcase in the bus hold and then in storage at the village terminal. In reverse, Takayama to Kanazawa works identically.
If Kanazawa is your only base, do Shirakawa-go as a return day trip: that guide is here. If your trip continues to Takayama, Matsumoto or Nagoya, do not double back. Cross once, with the village in the middle. It saves three hours of bus and a hotel change.
Shirakawa-go is one of the most visited villages in Japan and feels it between 10:00 and 15:00. Be on the first bus, walk to the far end of the village first, and leave the viewpoint for after lunch when the tour coaches have gone. For the same houses with a tenth of the people, Gokayama is 30 to 45 minutes down the same valley.
Run jointly by Hokutetsu and Nōhi Bus.

Yes. Book two separate legs: Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go, then a later bus from Shirakawa-go to Takayama. Four hours in the village is enough for most visitors.
Suitcases travel in the bus hold. The village bus terminal has coin lockers and luggage storage; on busy days go there first.
Only the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass, ¥19,800 for 5 days. A seat reservation is still required.
Either. Go in the direction your trip is already heading: from Tokyo or Kyoto by rail, start in Kanazawa; from Nagoya, start in Takayama.
