Out of the ticket gates, across the Tsuzumi-mon plaza, and into the lobby. The reliable choice for tight transit connections, late arrivals, and early departures.
Oct–NovSakura in early April, the snow wall from mid-April, firefly squid to early June, leaves that take two months to come down the mountains, then crab, yellowtail and powder. Every month has a reason to come, and a few have a reason to wait.
The best time to visit Hokuriku is mid-April to May or October to November: mild weather, sakura or autumn leaves, and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route open (15 April to 30 November in 2026). Come in December to February for snow crab, winter yellowtail and powder snow, accepting grey skies. See where to ski and what is in season. The quietest months are late January, late June and September. Early April and mid-November book out first.
Pick the month by what you want to see, not by the weather average. Hokuriku has no single best month, because its headline sights keep different calendars: the Alpine Route opens in mid-April and shuts at the end of November, the Kurobe Gorge Railway runs from late April, crab arrives on 6 November and the powder falls in January. The common mistake is picking "spring" or "autumn" and then finding the one thing you came for is a month away.
If I had one week to give a first-timer, it would be the second half of April. The sakura is just over in Kanazawa but still out in eastern Toyama, the snow walls are at their highest, firefly squid is on every menu in Toyama and the rainy season is two months off. The second choice is late October, when the torokko climbs through colour and the first crab is days away. Both are opinions; the table below is the facts.
Temperatures are Kanazawa's usual daily range. The mountains are 15–20 °C colder at the top of the Alpine Route. Dates are 2026–27 where the operators have published them.
| Month | Weather | What's on | Crowds | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 1–7 °C, snow and grey skies; about 62 hours of sun in the month | Snow crab, Himi kan-buri at its fattest, yukitsuri ropes, Shirakawa-go light-up on 11, 17, 24 and 31 Jan 2027 (reservation only), powder at Myōkō and Hakuba | New Year spike to about 3 Jan, then the quietest weeks of the year | Food and snow trip. Cheapest hotels of the year after New Year |
| February | 0–6 °C, snow, a few more clear days | Kenrokuen winter light-up 6–10, 13, 20, 27 Feb 2027; Gokayama light-ups (Suganuma 6–7 Feb, Ainokura 20–21 Feb); plum blossom from late February | Low in the cities; ski resorts busy around Chinese New Year | The best snow scenes, if you dress for them |
| March | 4–10 °C, snow turning to rain | Firefly squid season starts in late March; Hotaruika Museum live show from 20 March; yukitsuri come down mid-March; crab season ends 20 March | Quiet, rising at the end of the month | Good value, but the Alps are shut. Late March can catch early sakura |
| April | 8–17 °C, mild and mostly dry | Sakura, full bloom usually 1–10 April; Alpine Route opens 15 April; firefly squid boat tours (early April to early May); Asahi Spring Quartet; Kurobe Gorge Railway from 20 April; Tonami Tulip Fair late April | Heaviest of the year in sakura week; Golden Week from 29 April | The peak month, especially in Toyama. Book 3 months ahead |
| May | 13–22 °C, the best walking weather | Snow walls still high in early May (snow wall guide); Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival 1 May; firefly squid to early June; fresh green in the Kurobe Gorge | Golden Week (to 5 May) busy, then quiet | Mid to late May is the sweet spot of the whole year |
| June | 18–25 °C; rainy season from about 11 June | Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival, first weekend; iris at Kenrokuen; snow walls close 25 June (2026); Kurobe Dam water discharge from late June | Festival weekend busy, otherwise quiet | Early June is fine; late June is quiet and wet |
| July | 22–32 °C, humid; rainy season to about 23 July | Alpine flowers on the Murodō plateau, the most stable mountain weather after the rains, Kurobe Dam discharge | Moderate; Japanese school holidays from late July | Go high. The Alps are the reason to come in summer |
| August | Hot and humid in the cities | Uozu Tatemon Festival (first Friday and Saturday); Toyama Bay fireworks; mountain hiking; Obon | Obon week (13–15 Aug) is one of the busiest of the year | Mountains yes, city sightseeing only early and late in the day |
| September | 19–27 °C, cooling, with late-summer storms | Owara Kaze no Bon in Yatsuo 1–3 Sep; first colour at Murodō at the end of the month | One of Kanazawa's quietest months | Underrated: pleasant, uncrowded, moderate prices |
| October | 14–21 °C, crisp and often clear | Kurobe Gorge full line to Keyakidaira from 1 Oct 2026; Alpine Route colour moves down the mountain; Kurobe Dam discharge to 15 Oct | Moderate; holiday weekends busy | One of the two best months |
| November | 9–17 °C, rain returns in the second half | Yukitsuri from 1 Nov; snow crab from 6 Nov; Kurobe Gorge peak; Kenrokuen peak mid to late November, free light-ups 7, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 Nov 2026; Alpine Route and torokko close 30 Nov | Foliage weekends and the 3 and 23 Nov holidays book out | Excellent early in the month for leaves plus ropes, late for crab |
| December | 4–9 °C; the wettest month (301 mm in Kanazawa) | Crab and kan-buri season, ski resorts open from 5 to 19 December (Goryu in Hakuba runs one lift from 21 November), onsen weather | Quiet until the New Year holiday from about 28 Dec | A food trip. Bring waterproofs, not a camera plan |
Weather: 1991–2020 normals for Kanazawa. Festival and opening dates are for 2026–27; they move a little each year. See Kanazawa by season and Toyama's festival calendar for the detail.

The Japanese forecasters expect Hokuriku's 2026 colour to run slightly later than average, so lean to the second half of each window. Every peak date and itinerary →
Snow season in Hokuriku runs from December to March. The cities see light to moderate snow, heaviest in January and February; the mountains behind them get far more, up to 13 m a season at Myōkō's resorts.
Closed in winter: the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (reopens mid-April) and the Kurobe Gorge Railway (reopens late April). The Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go bus runs all year but does not stop in Gokayama from December to March, and heavy snow can delay it.
Hokuriku is one of the wettest and cloudiest regions of Japan. Kanazawa averages 2,401 mm of precipitation a year and Toyama 2,374 mm, against 1,598 mm in Tokyo. In January, Kanazawa gets about 62 hours of sunshine and Toyama 68, against 193 in Tokyo (1991–2020 normals). The Hokuriku saying is bentō wasurete mo kasa wasureru na (弁当忘れても傘忘れるな): forget your lunch if you must, never your umbrella.
The rainy season (tsuyu, 梅雨) in Hokuriku runs from about 11 June to 23 July on average (normals). Late summer brings storms, and November and December are wet again as the winter monsoon sets in. What follows is how I plan round it.
The quietest times in Kanazawa are late January, late June and September. January also has the year's lowest hotel prices, outside the New Year holiday. Toyama and Fukui see far fewer visitors than Kanazawa.
| When | Why it's quiet or busy | Book |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet: mid to late January | After New Year, before Chinese New Year; lowest hotel prices, best crab | 2 weeks – 1 month |
| Quiet: September | After Obon, no big Kanazawa festival, cooling weather | 2 weeks – 1 month (not Owara, 1–3 Sep) |
| Quiet: late June | After the Hyakumangoku Festival, in the rainy season | 2 weeks – 1 month |
| Busy: sakura week, early April | Kenrokuen free and full; Toyama's peak month | 3+ months |
| Busy: Golden Week, 29 Apr – 5 May | Japan's biggest holiday week; Alpine Route queues | 2+ months |
| Busy: Obon, 13–15 Aug | Family travel across Japan | 2+ months |
| Busy: mid-November | Kenrokuen colour, light-ups, first crab | 2+ months |
| Busy: 28 Dec – 3 Jan | New Year; Kenrokuen free 31 Dec – 3 Jan, Omicho shut 1–4 Jan | 2+ months |
Even in busy weeks, Kanazawa's crowds concentrate at Kenrokuen and Higashi Chaya from late morning to mid-afternoon. Go at opening or after 16:00, and you will have most of the city to yourself. Why that is, and how Hokuriku compares with Kyoto: Why Hokuriku.
The best time to visit Hokuriku, Kanazawa included, is mid-April to May or October to November: mild weather, sakura or autumn leaves, and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route open (15 April to 30 November in 2026). Early April and mid-November are also the busiest weeks, so book rooms 2 to 3 months ahead. For food, come from December to February for snow crab and winter yellowtail.
Cherry blossom in Kanazawa and Toyama usually opens in late March or early April and reaches full bloom in the first ten days of April. The average full-bloom date is 8 April for both cities (1991–2020 normals); in 2026 Kanazawa reached full bloom on 3 April and Toyama on 2 April. The blossom lasts about a week, so watch the March forecasts before fixing dates.
The best cherry blossom spots in Hokuriku are Kenrokuen and Kanazawa Castle Park in Kanazawa, the Matsukawa River in Toyama (500+ trees), Takaoka Kojo Park (about 1,800 trees), the Asuwa River in Fukui (about 600 trees along 2.2 km) and the Asahi Funakawa Spring Quartet in eastern Toyama. Most peak in early April; Funakawa runs a few days later, into mid-April. Kenrokuen is free for about a week at blossom time.
Autumn leaves in Hokuriku start high and work down: Murodō on the Alpine Route turns in late September, the Kurobe Gorge peaks from late October to mid November, and Kenrokuen in Kanazawa peaks from mid to late November. In 2026 the Kurobe Gorge Railway runs the full line to Keyakidaira from 1 October to 30 November. Forecasts point to a slightly late season. See the autumn leaves 2026 guide.
Snow season in Hokuriku runs from December to March, heaviest in January and February. Kanazawa city gets light to moderate falls; the mountains get far more, up to 13 m a season at Myōkō's resorts. Kenrokuen's yukitsuri snow ropes go up from 1 November and come down in mid-March. Ski at Myōkō or Hakuba from December; the Alpine Route and the Kurobe Gorge Railway are closed all winter.
Hokuriku is one of Japan's wettest regions: Kanazawa averages 2,401 mm of precipitation a year against 1,598 mm in Tokyo, and December is its wettest month (301 mm). The rainy season (tsuyu) runs from about 11 June to 23 July on average. Winter is the real trade-off: Kanazawa averages 62 hours of sunshine in January, about a third of Tokyo's 193. Carry an umbrella in every season.
A rainy day in Kanazawa works well indoors: the 21st Century Museum, the D.T. Suzuki Museum, the National Crafts Museum and the Prefectural Museum of Art are all within 10 minutes' walk of each other, and Omicho Market, the Kaikaro and Shima teahouses and a gold-leaf workshop at Sakuda are under cover. Most museums close on Mondays. In Toyama, pair the Glass Art Museum with a sushi counter.
The quietest times to visit Kanazawa are late January (after the New Year holiday), September and late June, and January has the year's lowest hotel prices outside New Year. The hardest weeks to book are early April (sakura), Golden Week (29 April to 5 May), the Hyakumangoku Festival weekend in early June, Obon (13 to 15 August) and mid-November. Book those 2 to 3 months ahead.
Hokuriku's seasonal specialities are hard to find elsewhere in Japan: firefly squid (hotaru-ika) glowing in Toyama Bay from March to early June (boat tours early April to early May), the Yuki-no-Otani snow walls on the Alpine Route (15 April to 25 June in 2026), the 3,000 m Tateyama range seen across Toyama Bay on clear winter mornings, powder snow at Myōkō and Hakuba, Himi kan-buri winter yellowtail (November to February) and snow crab from 6 November.
Snow crab season in Ishikawa and Fukui opens on 6 November and runs to 20 March for male crab; the smaller female kōbako crab is sold only in November and December. A single-crab plate at Omicho Market costs about ¥4,000 to ¥8,000, and a crab kaiseki at a Kanazawa ryōtei runs ¥20,000 to ¥40,000 or more. December to February is the best-value stretch for winter fish.
