Asahi & Nyuzen朝日・入善

The most photographed spring view in Toyama. Local farmers planted cherry trees, tulips, and rapeseed along the Funakawa River in deliberate composition with the snow-capped Mount Shirouma and Mount Asahi as backdrop.

280+ cherry trees form a tunnel along both river banks. Early-flowering tulip varieties were chosen specifically to bloom with the cherries. Fires are lit on select evenings for atmospheric night viewing. The river’s stillness makes for perfect mirror reflections at sunrise.

The grand-scale alternative to the Funakawa Quartet. 3 million tulips in 100+ varieties across ~8 hectares of fields, with the snow-capped Northern Alps as immediate backdrop. The location rotates each year, so every annual event feels fresh.

Less commercialised than Tonami, fewer food stalls, more pure flower focus. You can walk into the fields for picture-making positions; deep reds, yellows, oranges, pinks, purples in massive intersecting blocks.

One of the most unusual forests in Japan, a National Natural Monument. A 2.67-hectare cedar forest growing on a natural spring-water swamp at the northern limit of where Tateyama cedar can grow. The only flat-land cedar swamp in Japan.

Watch for fukujō kōshin (伏條更新), fallen trunks pressed down by snow take root and grow new trees, normally only seen in high alpine forests. A wooden boardwalk threads through the moss, streams, and ponds. In mid-April, the rare Nyuzen Otome Kikuzakura cherry, cultivated only here, is in bloom.

Nyuzen is fed by 1–2 °C deep-sea water pumped from 384 m offshore. Kakinohoshi bathes oysters from across Japan in this water for two days before serving, eliminating bacteria and viruses more thoroughly than government standards require.

Order the Kakinohoshi set (~¥3,000) for a variety with rice and miso, or just raw oysters from Hiroshima/Miyagi. The adjacent shop offers free tastings of four water types and ¥100 cups of deep-sea-water coffee, surprisingly sweet and smooth.
