FAQ

Festival questions, answered

Which Hokuriku festival is worth a special trip?

Owara Kaze no Bon (1–3 September) for atmosphere, Takayama (14–15 April and 9–10 October) for the floats and karakuri puppets, and Nozawa Onsen's fire fight (15 January) for spectacle. In Golden Week, Takaoka (1 May), Nanao (3–5 May) and Jōhana (4–5 May) fall within five days. Almost all are free to watch.

Are the 2027 dates confirmed?

Some fall on the same dates every year: Owara on 1–3 September, Takayama on 14–15 April and 9–10 October, Takaoka on 1 May and Nozawa on 15 January. The Owara organiser and Zenkō-ji (Gokaichō, 4 April to 19 June 2027) have published theirs. The rest follow a weekday rule, such as the first Friday and Saturday of August for Uozu Tatemon, and are labelled "expected" until the organiser confirms, usually in spring. Nagano Tōmyō Matsuri and Tsuruga Matsuri had no 2027 dates on 27 October 2026.

Do I need tickets or reservations?

Most street festivals are free. The exceptions: Nozawa's fire fight (in 2026 only villagers and guests staying in the village got viewing tickets), the Shirakawa-go light-up (reservation only: a room, a car-park space or a bus seat), the Omizu-okuri torches (¥2,500 each in 2026, booked through the Wakasa Obama tourist information centre) and paid seating or indoor stage shows at Owara and Fushiki.

What happens if it rains?

Takayama's puppet shows, procession, float display and night festival are cancelled in rain, with no day in reserve. Owara's street dancing pauses in rain and the indoor stage shows go on. In Furukawa the Okoshi-daiko drumming runs in rain, but the float lineup on the 20th does not. Tsuruga's float procession, folk dance and carnival are cancelled in rain.

Are the Noto festivals running after the 2024 earthquake?

Several are. Nanao's Seihaku-sai pulled its three floats on 5 May 2026, and Noto Town and Nanao published 2026 dates for Abare (3–4 July) and Ishizaki Hōtō-sai (1 August). Wajima Taisai is smaller than before. Confirm each with the local contact before you travel; our Noto page lists every summer kiriko festival.
