In brief

Zenkō-ji (善光寺) can be walked at any hour, free. Tickets are bought at the temple: ¥800 for the inner sanctuary and the Okaidan, ¥800 for the Sanmon gate, ¥500 for the Kyōzō sutra library, or ¥1,500 for all of them plus the museum. The inner sanctuary closes at 16:30 from April to October (16:00 in winter). The morning service, O-asaji, starts at 5:30 in midsummer and 7:00 in midwinter. From Nagano Station it is 25–30 min uphill on foot, or ¥150 by bus.

One temple, no single sect

Zenkō-ji belongs to no one school. Priests of the Tendai and Jōdo sects run it together, which is why the dawn service is held twice, once by each. Pilgrims have come for centuries on the saying that you should visit once in a lifetime, and Nagano grew up around its gate. This page is the everyday visit. Every six or seven years the temple shows its stand-in Buddha at the Gokaichō, next on 4 April to 19 June 2027.

What to see

Five things to do at Zenkō-ji

01

Niōmon and Nakamise-dōri仁王門・仲見世通り

From Nagano Station up Chūō-dōri, or the Zenkōji-Daimon bus stop at the top

The outer gate, the Niōmon, guards the start of the approach. From there a stone-paved lane, Nakamise-dōri, runs to the Sanmon, lined with soba shops, oyaki stalls and souvenirs. It is free, and it is the best 10 minutes of the visit in the early morning, before the shops open.

The main hall本堂

Past the Sanmon, at the head of the stone path

The main hall was rebuilt in 1707 after a fire in 1700 and is a National Treasure. Its T-shaped plan is called shumoku-zukuri (撞木造), after the bell striker it resembles. The outer hall is free to enter; the inner sanctuary and the Okaidan below it need the ¥800 ticket.

Inner sanctuary and Okaidan内陣・お戒壇巡り

Inside the main hall, ¥800 (included in the ¥1,500 set)

The inner sanctuary holds the gilded altar. The original Buddha, the Ikkō Sanzon Amida (一光三尊阿弥陀如来), is an absolute secret image that nobody sees; what you see is a stand-in. Beneath the altar a pitch-dark corridor, the Okaidan-meguri (お戒壇巡り), runs under it: keep your right hand on the wall until you find the “key to paradise” (極楽の錠前), a metal latch under the hidden Buddha. Touching it is said to bond you with the Buddha. It takes a few minutes in a normal week.

Sanmon and Kyōzō山門・経蔵

Sanmon, Kyōzō and museum: 9:00–16:00

The two-storey Sanmon gate dates from 1750. Climb to the upper floor (¥800, or in the set ticket) for a view over the roofs of the temple and across Nagano. Beside it the Kyōzō (経蔵) is a sutra library with a revolving case: turning it once is held to equal reading the whole Buddhist canon (¥500).

Oyaki, soba and a free brewery tourおやき・そば

Nakamise-dōri and the lanes beside it

Oyaki are Nagano's stuffed dumplings, sold hot along Nakamise-dōri. Yawataya Isogorō sells shichimi spice at the gate. Nishinomon Yoshinoya, a sake and miso brewer beside the Daihongan since 1637, runs a free tour and tasting from 8:30 to 17:00.

O-asaji: the dawn service and the rosary blessing

O-asaji (お朝事) is the temple's first service of the day and is held every day of the year. Priests of both sects chant in turn, Tendai in the first 30 minutes and Jōdo in the next, about an hour in all. Before and after, the two head priests, from Daikanjin and Daihongan, walk the approach and touch the heads of kneeling visitors with a rosary (お数珠頂戴). That blessing and the outer hall cost nothing; a seat in the inner sanctuary for the chanting needs the ¥800 ticket.

Read from the chart in the temple's leaflet, which eases the start time by about a minute a day between the steady stretches. The exact time for each day is on zenkoji.jp/event or from the temple office on 026-234-3591 (9:00–16:30). Offerings and prayers can be requested from 30 to 10 minutes before the start.

Practical tips

Before you go

Small things that make the day easier.

  1. 01
Buy the set ticket if you want more than two things. The inner sanctuary (¥800), Sanmon (¥800) and Kyōzō (¥500) come to ¥2,100 on their own; the set is ¥1,500 and adds the museum.
  2. 02
Come for O-asaji. The hall is quiet, the chanting carries, and the inner sanctuary opens an hour before. In summer that means a start from about 4:30.
  3. 03
Walk up, ride down. The 25–30 min climb along Chūō-dōri is the traditional approach and the bus is easy to catch from the temple end.
  4. 04
Take care in the Okaidan. It is completely dark. Keep your right hand on the wall and shuffle; children and anyone unsteady should go with someone.
  5. 05
Do not expect the real Buddha. The original image has never been shown, not even at a Gokaichō. Any listing that promises it means the stand-in.
  6. 06
Book a shukubō by phone. The 39 temple lodgings take bookings through the Zenkō-ji Shukubō Association on 026-237-7676 (9:00–16:30).
FAQ

Zenkō-ji questions, answered

How much does Zenkō-ji cost?

The grounds and the outer main hall are free. The inner sanctuary with the Okaidan is ¥800 for adults, the Sanmon gate ¥800 and the Kyōzō sutra library ¥500. A set ticket covering all three plus the museum is ¥1,500. High school students pay ¥600 for the set and elementary children ¥200; preschoolers are free. Prices are from 1 April 2026.

What time does Zenkō-ji open?

The grounds are open at any hour. The inner sanctuary and Okaidan open one hour before the morning service, about 4:30 in midsummer and 6:00 in midwinter, and close at 16:30 from April to October, 16:15 in March and November and 16:00 from December to February. The Sanmon, Kyōzō and museum are open 9:00–16:00.

When is the Zenkō-ji morning service?

O-asaji starts at about 5:30 around midsummer and about 7:00 from late December to mid February, with the start easing by a minute a day in between, for example 6:30 from mid March to late April and about 6:00 in September and October. It lasts about an hour and is held every day. The rosary blessing on the approach and the outer hall are free; the inner sanctuary needs the ¥800 ticket.

How do I get from Nagano Station to Zenkō-ji?

Walk 25–30 min uphill along Chūō-dōri, or take a bus from stop 1 (routes 10, 16 or 17) to Zenkōji-Daimon in about 10 min for ¥150. From Tokyo the Kagayaki Shinkansen takes 1h 20m (¥8,450 reserved).

What is the Okaidan at Zenkō-ji?

A pitch-dark corridor under the main altar. You walk it with your right hand on the wall until you touch the “key to paradise”, a metal latch beneath the hidden Buddha, which is said to bond you with the Buddha. It is included in the ¥800 inner sanctuary ticket and takes a few minutes.

Can I stay overnight at Zenkō-ji?

Yes. The 39 shukubō (temple lodgings) on the approach serve vegetarian dinners and walk you to the dawn service. Book through the Zenkō-ji Shukubō Association on 026-237-7676 (9:00–16:30). Normal prices start at about ¥13,200 a person with two meals on a weekday; the temple's own list has the rest.
