In brief

Togakushi (戸隠) sits at about 1,200 m, 59 min from Nagano Station by the reserved Alpico express (¥2,500, 1 April to 4 December 2026). Five shrines run along the mountain, and the innermost, Okusha, is a 2 km walk that ends in an avenue of 200+ cedars. Add soba in horseshoe bundles, a ninja museum (¥700, closed Wednesdays) and Kagami-ike's leaves in mid October. Okusha is closed beyond the Zuishinmon gate from early January to late April.

A shrine you walk to

Togakushi is a mountain-worship centre, and the shrine's own account puts its history at over 2,000 years. Most visitors come for the cedar avenue and the soba, and the ninja story that grew up in the same hills. It is the easiest half-day escape from Nagano city into the mountains. Below: the five shrines, the walk, the food and the bus.

Okusha and the cedar avenue奥社・杉並木

Okusha-iriguchi bus stop, then 2 km on foot, about 40 min each way

The innermost of the five shrines is reached on foot. Past the red thatched Zuishinmon gate, more than 200 cedars line about 500 m of path, about 400 years old and a natural monument since 1973. The last stretch to Okusha is steep stone steps, and Kuzuryūsha, the dragon shrine, stands beside it. From 7 January (in 2026) the path is closed beyond the gate until the snow melts in late April, because of avalanche and falling-debris risk.

The five shrines戸隠神社五社

Hōkōsha, Hinomikosha, Chūsha, Kuzuryūsha and Okusha

Togakushi Shrine is five shrines along the mountain. Hōkōsha (宝光社) comes first from Nagano, up more than 270 stone steps through old cedars. Hinomikosha (火之御子社) is a 15 min walk on and Chūsha (中社) another 15, the centre of the village with soba shops around it. A local shuttle (¥400, about hourly) or a 40 min walk takes you to the Okusha entrance. Nagano's tourist bureau suggests about 6 hours for all five from Nagano Station.

Togakushi soba戸隠そば

Soba shops around Chūsha and at the Okusha entrance

One of Japan's three great soba (日本三大そば). The flour is milled with the husk (挽きぐるみ), the dough rolled round with a single pin, and the noodles lifted onto a bamboo tray in bocchi-mori (ぼっち盛り), five or six horseshoe-shaped bundles. Togakushi's grated daikon is the condiment. Walking between Chūsha and the Okusha entrance, several shops sit on the way, so lunch fits the circuit.

Practical tips

Before you go

Small things that make the day easier.

  1. 01
Reserve the bus. Every seat on the sightseeing express is reserved, and booking opens a month ahead on highwaybus.com. Contactless Visa or cash only on board.
  2. 02
Bring warm layers. The village sits at about 1,200 m, noticeably cooler than Nagano city even in summer.
  3. 03
Check the season. Okusha is shut beyond the Zuishinmon gate from early January to late April; the ninja museum is shut from late November; the reserved bus stops after 4 December.
  4. 04
Eat before 14:00. Soba shops close early, and the last returns leave Okusha-iriguchi at 16:24 on the spring timetable.
  5. 05
Keep to the path. The shrine asks visitors to stay on the cedar avenue's marked paths to protect the roots.
FAQ

Togakushi questions, answered

Can I visit Togakushi as a day trip from Nagano?

Yes. The reserved Alpico sightseeing express from Nagano Station (stop 7, Zenkō-ji exit) reaches Okusha-iriguchi in 59 min and costs ¥2,500 one way. It runs 1 April to 4 December 2026 and every seat is reserved on highwaybus.com, up to a month ahead. Allow 5 to 6 hours for the shrines and lunch.

How long is the walk to Togakushi Okusha?

About 2 km from the Okusha-iriguchi stop, around 40 min each way. The red Zuishinmon gate comes first, then roughly 500 m of cedar avenue, then steep stone steps to the shrine.

Can you visit Togakushi in winter?

Partly. Okusha and Kuzuryūsha closed for the winter on 7 January in 2026 and reopen around late April, and nobody may go beyond the Zuishinmon gate in between. Chūsha and Hōkōsha stay open. The reserved express stops after 4 December, so you go by route bus 70 or by car.

When are the autumn leaves at Togakushi?

Kagami-ike and the highland usually peak in mid October and are good from early October to early November; the 2026 forecast is mid to late October. Cars are controlled on some autumn weekends, so the bus is easier.

What is Togakushi soba?

One of Japan's three great soba (with Iwate's wanko soba and Shimane's Izumo soba). The noodles are served on a round bamboo tray in five or six horseshoe-shaped bundles, bocchi-mori, made from flour milled with the husk and eaten with grated Togakushi daikon.

Is the ninja museum worth it?

For families, yes. One ¥700 ticket covers the folk museum, the ninja museum and the trick house; it is open 25 April to 23 November 2026, 9:00–17:00, closed Wednesdays. Children also like the separate Kids Ninja Village, from ¥650.
