In brief

Kamikōchi (上高地) is open from 17 April to 15 November 2026 and closed to visitors in winter. Private cars, rental cars and motorbikes cannot enter: park at Sawando or Hirayu, or arrive by Alpico bus, shuttle or taxi. From Matsumoto Station take the Alpico train to Shin-Shimashima (30 min, ¥710), then the bus (about 65 min, about ¥3,100; reserve). Entry is free. Allow a full day; the last shuttle back leaves at about 17:55.

A valley you walk, not drive

The Azusa River runs through a flat valley floor of larch and birch woods with the Hotaka range above it. There is no road for visitors, so everything is on foot from the bus terminal at the Kappa Bridge end. Matsumoto is the usual base and its page covers the town; this page is the valley, its season, the buses and the walks.

What to see

Five things to do in Kamikōchi

01

Kappa Bridge河童橋

About 5 min on foot from the Kamikōchi Bus Terminal

A narrow suspension footbridge across the Azusa River with the Hotaka range behind it: the valley's best-known view and the starting point of every walk. The bus terminal, cafés, hotels and the visitor centre are within a few minutes of it. Free.

Taishō Pond大正池

Taishō-ike bus stop, on the way into the valley (¥450 by bus to the terminal)

The pond appeared in 1915 when an eruption of Mt Yake dammed the Azusa River, and dead trees still stand in the water. Mist on the surface at dawn is what photographers come for. The walk to Kappa Bridge is 75–80 min (3.8–4.0 km), so many people leave the bus here and walk on.

Myōjin Pond明神池

Kappa Bridge to Myōjin: 50–60 min each way, 2.5–3 km

A small, clear pond beside the Okumiya of Hotaka Shrine, in larch and fir woods under the peaks. From Kappa Bridge it is 50–60 min each way on the flat riverside path, so about 2 h there and back with time at the pond. Beyond it the path continues to Tokusawa, another hour.

Autumn colour on the Azusa River梓川の紅葉

The valley floor between Kappa Bridge and Taishō Pond

October brings both the colour and the crowds. The paths run on both banks of the river and are flat, so you walk through the leaves rather than climb to them. On the way, the Weston monument is 20 min from Kappa Bridge and Tashiro Pond about 50 min, and Tashiro Pond to Taishō Pond is a further 25 min. The valley closes on 15 November, so late October is the last good week.

Kamikōchi Bus Terminal上高地バスターミナル

Every Alpico bus, shuttle and taxi ends here

The hub of the valley: buses from Shin-Shimashima and Matsumoto and the shuttles from Sawando and Hirayu all arrive here, and the last of them leave at about 17:55. Note where your return bus leaves from and the time of the last one as soon as you arrive. Kappa Bridge is about 5 min away.

Practical tips

Before you go

Small things that make the day easier.

  1. 01
Reserve the bus. Alpico gives reserved seats priority on the Shin-Shimashima bus, and summer and October weekends fill. Shuttles from Sawando and Hirayu need no booking.
  2. 02
Plan around the last bus. The last shuttle back to Sawando leaves at about 17:55 and to Hirayu at about 17:30. Be at the terminal by 17:30.
  3. 03
Share a taxi. From the upper Sawando zone a taxi to the bus terminal is ¥5,400 for up to six people. For four people that is ¥1,350 each, less than the ¥1,600 shuttle.
  4. 04
Dress for the altitude. The valley floor is 1,400–1,600 m, colder than Matsumoto (about 600 m), and the weather changes quickly.
  5. 05
Know the bear rules. Carry a bell on trails, stay in daylight and follow the visitor centre's notices. Details on the bears page.
  6. 06
Do not plan on winter. The road closes after 15 November 2026 and reopens in April; 2027 dates were not out on 27 Oct 2026.
FAQ

Kamikōchi questions, answered

When is Kamikōchi open in 2026 and 2027?

In 2026 the road opened on 17 April, the opening festival was 27 April and the closing ceremony is on 15 November. The valley is closed to visitors in winter. The 2027 dates had not been announced on 27 October 2026; expect mid April to mid November.

How do I get from Matsumoto to Kamikōchi?

Take the Alpico Kamikōchi Line from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima (30 min, ¥710), then the Alpico bus (about 65 min, about ¥3,100). Allow 1h 30m to 2 h in all and reserve the bus. There is also a direct Alpico bus from Matsumoto Bus Terminal; check its fare and times on alpico.co.jp.

Can I drive to Kamikōchi?

No. Private cars, rental cars and motorbikes cannot pass the Kama Tunnel. Park at Sawando (Matsumoto side) or Hirayu (Takayama side) and take the shuttle bus (Sawando ¥1,600 one way, ¥3,000 return) or a taxi.

Is Kamikōchi a day trip from Matsumoto?

Yes, if you start early. The journey is about two hours each way, so most people allow a full day and take the 17:55 bus back, or stay a night in the valley.

How far is Kappa Bridge from Taishō Pond and Myōjin Pond?

Kappa Bridge to Taishō Pond is 3.8–4.0 km, 75–80 min on foot. Kappa Bridge to Myōjin Pond is 2.5–3 km, 50–60 min each way. Both paths are flat.

Are there bears in Kamikōchi?

Yes. Bears live there while it is open. The risk is moderate on trails away from the busy boardwalks and low on the main Kappa Bridge walk in daytime. Carry a bell, stay in daylight and follow the visitor centre's notices; the bears page has the 2026 situation.
