In brief

The Gokaichō (御開帳) shows Zenkō-ji's Maedachi Honzon, the stand-in of its hidden Buddha, from 4 April to 19 June 2027 (77 days). A 10 m pillar, the ekō-bashira, is joined to the image by a cord, and touching it counts as touching the Buddha. The last one drew 6.36 million people, and on 3 to 5 May 2022 the pillar queue reached about 150 min. Go at dawn, after 17:00 or on a June weekday, and book Nagano beds now. Tokyo to Nagano is 1h 20m, ¥8,450 reserved.

Six years apart, seven by the old count

The Gokaichō falls in ox and sheep years. Counting inclusively, as Japan traditionally does, that is once every seven years; on the calendar it is six. The edition due in 2021 was held a year late, from 3 April to 29 June 2022, stretched to 88 days to spread the crowds. 2027 returns to the usual cycle and, at 77 days, is the second longest on record. Below: the dates, what you actually do there, the tickets, the queues and where to sleep.

Four things to do at the Gokaichō

01

The ekō-bashira pillar回向柱

In front of the main hall, free

A square wooden pillar (角塔婆) about 10 m high is raised before the main hall. A cord, the zen no tsuna (善の綱), joins it to the hand of the Maedachi Honzon inside, so a hand on the pillar is a hand on the Buddha. It is received on 28 March, a week before the opening. In 2022 it could be touched at any hour and was lit in the evening.

The Maedachi Honzon and the inner sanctuary前立本尊・内陣

Main hall, inner sanctuary ticket ¥800

The original, the Ikkō Sanzon Amida (一光三尊阿弥陀如来), is an absolute secret image (絶対秘仏) that nobody sees. The Maedachi Honzon is the stand-in made in its likeness. It comes out of storage only for the Gokaichō and is enshrined in the main hall on 3 April. In 2022 you reached it through the inner-sanctuary (内陣) queue, which needs the ¥800 ticket. The hall itself is a National Treasure, rebuilt in 1707.

A pitch-dark corridor runs beneath the hidden Buddha. Walk it with your right hand on the wall until you find the “key to paradise” (極楽の錠前), a metal latch under the image; touching it is said to bond you with the Buddha. It takes a few minutes in a normal week. In 2022 the wait peaked at about 100 min.

O-asaji and the rosary blessingお朝事・お数珠頂戴

Daily at sunrise, about an hour

The morning service runs every day of the year, from about 5:30 in summer to about 7:00 in winter; the temple posts monthly times on its schedule page. Before and after it, the chief priests of Daikanjin and Daihongan walk to the hall and touch the heads of kneeling visitors with a rosary (お数珠頂戴). The inner sanctuary opens an hour before the service. To be there at dawn, sleep on the approach.

Prices from 1 April 2026; preschool is free, and the grounds and outer hall cost nothing. The temple's Gokaichō site listed 2027 admission and hours as “coming soon” on 13 Oct 2026, so these are the normal prices and hours: inner sanctuary closes at 16:30 (April to October), Sanmon and Kyōzō 9:00–16:00. In 2022 the inner sanctuary was open from 4:30 or 5:00 to 17:00 and the Sanmon until 20:00; expect something similar.

Walk up and, if the queue has worn you out, take the bus down. Buses will be full at midday in spring 2027. If Nagano's hotels are full, Toyama is 45 min away and Kanazawa 1h 5m, both on the same Shinkansen.

Practical tips

Before you go

Small things that make the day easier.

  1. 01
Book the bed before the ticket. Rooms in Nagano and the 39 shukubō will go long before April. Free cancellation, where offered, costs nothing to hold.
  2. 02
Walk up, ride down. The 25–30 min walk along Chūō-dōri is the traditional approach and skips the bus queue at midday.
  3. 03
Do not expect the real Buddha. No one sees the original image. If a tour or listing promises the hidden Buddha, it means the Maedachi Honzon.
  4. 04
Use the dawn. The inner sanctuary opens an hour before O-asaji, and in 2022 the wait early on was a fraction of the afternoon's.
  5. 05
Pair it with Togakushi or Obuse. Both are a half day from Nagano: Togakushi's cedar avenue by reserved bus, Obuse's Hokusai museum by Nagaden.
FAQ

Gokaichō questions, answered

When is the Zenkō-ji Gokaichō in 2027?

4 April to 19 June 2027, 77 days. The Maedachi Honzon is enshrined on 3 April, the opening service is on 4 April and the closing service on 19 June; the image goes back on 20 June. The ekō-bashira pillar is received on 28 March.

Why is it called every seven years when 2027 is only five years after 2022?

The Gokaichō falls in ox and sheep years, which is six years apart on the calendar and seven by the traditional inclusive count. The one due in 2021 was held a year late, in 2022, because of COVID. 2027 puts it back on the usual cycle.

How much does the Gokaichō cost?

The grounds, the outer hall and the pillar are free. The inner sanctuary with the Okaidan is ¥800 and the set ticket for the inner sanctuary, Okaidan, Sanmon, Kyōzō and museum is ¥1,500 (prices from April 2026). The temple has not announced a separate Gokaichō price or 2027 hours.

How long is the queue to touch the pillar?

On the worst days of 2022, 3 to 5 May, queues reached up to 150 min for the pillar, 100 min for the inner-sanctuary image and 100 min for the Okaidan. Early morning and June weekdays were far quieter. Expect similar peaks in Golden Week 2027.

Can I stay in the temple?

Yes. Zenkō-ji has 39 shukubō (temple lodgings) on the approach, with vegetarian meals and a walk to the dawn service. Book through the Shukubō Association on 026-237-7676 (9:00–16:30), or directly: Renge-in opened its Gokaichō bookings on 28 September 2026. Many will be full early.

Can I see the real hidden Buddha at the Gokaichō?

No. The original Ikkō Sanzon Amida has never been shown, even at a Gokaichō. What you see is the Maedachi Honzon, the stand-in made in its likeness, and the pillar that is joined to it by a cord.
