In brief

Karuizawa is 1h 6m from Tokyo on the fastest Asama, ¥6,130 reserved, and is the first stop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen after the Tokyo suburbs. A day covers Old Karuizawa Ginza and Kumoba Pond, or Hoshino with a ¥1,350 onsen. The ski resort opens on 31 October 2026, and colour at Kumoba Pond peaks from mid-October to early November.

A forest town an hour from Tokyo

Karuizawa (軽井沢) sits at about 1,000 m on the slopes of Mt Asama. It was a post town on the Nakasendō, and became a summer resort after the Canadian missionary Alexander Croft Shaw built a house here in 1886. Today it splits into three parts: Old Karuizawa (Kyu-Karuizawa) with the Ginza street and Kumoba Pond, the station area with the Prince Shopping Plaza, and Naka-Karuizawa, where the Hoshino resort sits 4 km west of Old Karuizawa. It is also the first stop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, so you can start a trip to Nagano and Kanazawa here or end one on the way back.

When to go

Autumn colour, snow and cycling

Karuizawa is cooler than Tokyo all year, which is its draw in summer.

  1. 01
Autumn colour. Kumoba Pond peaks from mid-October to early November, so a Tokyo day trip in the last week of October is the usual timing.
  2. 02
Skiing. Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort opens on 31 October 2026, the earliest in Nagano, on machine-made snow. Full-day lift ticket from ¥8,000, 14 courses, free for elementary-school children, and a mountain-top scenic lift from 19 December.
  3. 03
Summer and cycling. Cooler air and quiet forest roads; weekends are the busy days.
  4. 04
Onward to Kusatsu. The bus takes about 80 minutes and costs ¥2,240, via Shiraito Falls, so you can do the falls and a Kusatsu bath in one day.

FAQ

Karuizawa, answered

How long does it take to get from Tokyo to Karuizawa?

1h 6m on the fastest Asama Shinkansen from Tokyo Station, and the Hakutaka also stops there. A reserved seat is ¥6,130. The Kagayaki does not stop at Karuizawa. It is a realistic day trip, but one night lets you cycle and stay for the evening.

Is Karuizawa worth a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes, if you like forest, cycling and cooler air. A day covers Old Karuizawa Ginza, Kumoba Pond and Shiraito Falls, or Hoshino and its onsen. Autumn colour at Kumoba Pond peaks from mid-October to early November.

How do you get around Karuizawa?

By bicycle (about ¥1,000 to ¥1,500 a day to hire), the local Kusakaru Kotsu and Seibu buses, or taxi. A 1-day bus pass is ¥2,500 and a 2-day pass ¥3,600. The Shinano Railway links Karuizawa to Naka-Karuizawa in 5 minutes for ¥230.

How do you get from Karuizawa to Kusatsu Onsen?

By bus from Karuizawa Station: about 80 minutes and ¥2,240 one way, stopping at Shiraito Falls on the way. Buses run roughly every one to two hours, so check the timetable before you plan the day.

When does the Karuizawa Prince ski resort open in 2026-27?

On 31 October 2026, the earliest opening in Nagano Prefecture, using machine-made snow. A full-day lift ticket starts from ¥8,000 and elementary-school children ski free. The resort is part of the Prince complex south of the station.

Does the Hokuriku Arch Pass include Karuizawa?

Yes. Karuizawa is on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line between Tokyo and Nagano, so the ¥35,000 Hokuriku Arch Pass covers it. For a single Tokyo return trip, tickets (about ¥12,260 return) are cheaper.
