Oct–NovA day out from Toyama by train: a Shinkansen hop to Nagano, a mountain railway to the onsen town of Yudanaka and one of the world's largest ropeway cabins up into October colour, with a bunch of Shine Muscat grapes to pick on the way home.
SORA terrace sits at the top of the Ryūō Ropeway, 1,770 m above Yamanouchi in northern Nagano, looking over the Northern Alps and, most afternoons, a sea of cloud. From Toyama it is a long but easy day by rail: Kagayaki to Nagano (46 min), Nagaden to Yudanaka (44 min), then Ryūō's free shuttle. Go in early to mid October for the colour; the ropeway stops for the year after 8 November.

The first shuttle leaves Yudanaka at 9:30, before the earliest train from Toyama can arrive, so plan on the 10:50 or later. If the ropeway stops for weather, the shuttle stops too. Shuttle times from Yudanaka: 9:30, 10:50, 12:30, 14:10, 15:30, 16:30.
Two Swiss-built cabins, among the largest in the world, each carry 166 people 2,293 m up the slope, climbing 790 m in about 10 minutes. The forest below turns from green to yellow and red as you climb.
Cars leave every 20 minutes, 9:00–18:00 from 28 September; last car up about 17:20.
A long timber deck over the Hokushin mountains and the Northern Alps, with Sado Island on the clearest days. Ryūō says a sea of cloud formed on about 60% of days in the 2024 season, most often in the late afternoon.
Beside it, the 14 m spiral staircase climbs into the sky like Jack's beanstalk. Each climb is a ¥500 photo fee for up to six people, 9:30–18:00. The SORA terrace café serves food until 17:00 and drinks until 17:30; the Cloud Herb Garden has over 150 herbs.
Pick one bunch of Shine Muscat, the big seedless green grape, for ¥1,800 and take it home. The season runs from mid September to about mid October, so an 11 October visit is near the end; phone ahead (0269-22-2530).
The tour-style lunch of matsutake rice and all-you-can-eat mushroom hotpot (¥1,980) is a pre-booked group meal; individuals can eat at the café counter downstairs.

About ¥24,000–¥27,000 without a rail pass, or ¥9,500–¥11,500 with the Arch Pass or JR Pass, which cover the Shinkansen. Coach tours from Toyama to the same two stops cost about ¥19,000 with lunch, so the train is worth it if you already hold a pass or want to go at your own pace.

Yes, in a long day by train. Take the Kagayaki from Toyama to Nagano (46 min), the Nagaden limited express to Yudanaka (44 min), then Ryūō's free shuttle bus (about 25 min) to the ropeway. Leaving Toyama at 8:29 gets you to the top before noon and home by 19:17.
The round trip is ¥2,500 on weekdays, ¥2,700 at weekends and ¥2,900 on peak days (10–12 October), children ¥1,300–¥1,700. The ropeway runs until 8 November 2026, 9:00–18:00, last car up about 17:20.
The top station is at 1,770 m. Colour starts in late September, peaks in early to mid October and lasts into early November on the lower slopes: birch and beech turn yellow, maples and wild vines red.
