In brief

Ueda is about 1h 30m from Tokyo on the Hakutaka or Asama (¥6,900 reserved), and Bessho Onsen is a further 30 minutes on the Ueda Electric Railway Bessho Line (¥590, about every 30 minutes). Bessho has three public baths at ¥300, the octagonal pagoda of Anraku-ji (a National Treasure, ¥300) and the hall of Kitamuki Kannon (founded 825, free). It works as a night, or as a long day from Tokyo with 4 to 5 hours in the village.

A castle town and a bathing village on one branch line

Ueda sits between Karuizawa and Nagano on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, 189 km from Tokyo. It is the castle town of the Sanada family and the junction for the Bessho Line, a short private railway into the hills. Bessho Onsen at the end of it is one of the oldest hot springs in Nagano, with a history that goes back before AD 825 and a mention in Sei Shōnagon’s Pillow Book. Its temples earned it the name Kamakura of Shinshū.

Japanese visitors know Bessho well, but Nagano Prefecture's 2019 survey of foreign guest nights did not put Ueda in the top ten municipalities, so the temples and baths are quiet. Below: Ueda first, then the village, the three baths with their closing days, two plans and the fares.

Ueda Castle上田城

12 min on foot from the Castle exit of Ueda Station · turret ¥300

Sanada Masayuki built the castle in 1583. His forces held it against Tokugawa armies in 1585 and again in 1600, and the second siege delayed Tokugawa Hidetada's march to Sekigahara. You can walk the moats and stone walls in the park; the rebuilt turret is open for ¥300 (¥500 with the city museum), 9:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30, closed Wednesdays, the day after a public holiday and at the new year. The Yagura-mon gate tower is also shut from mid-November to March. Sanada Shrine stands inside the grounds.

Before you go

Five things to know

Bessho is a village, not a resort. The planning is mostly timing.

  1. 01
Check the closing day. Ishiyu is shut on Tuesdays, Ōyu on Wednesdays and Daishiyu on Thursdays, so two of the three are always open.
  2. 02
Bring coins and a small towel. Each bath is ¥300 and the towels are sold at the desk. Wash before you get in, as everywhere.
  3. 03
Go early. The village is quietest before 10:00, and Anraku-ji closes at 17:00 (16:00 from November to February).
  4. 04
Check the last Bessho Line train before dinner or a late bath; the line runs about every 30 minutes by day.
  5. 05
Combine it with a stop either side. Karuizawa and Nagano are the bigger stops either side, so Tokyo, Karuizawa, Ueda, Nagano, Kanazawa is an easy line. See Between Tokyo and Kyoto.

FAQ

Bessho Onsen and Ueda, answered

Is Bessho Onsen worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a small hot-spring village with temples rather than a resort. It has three public baths at ¥300 each, the National Treasure octagonal pagoda at Anraku-ji (¥300), the 825 AD Kitamuki Kannon hall (free) and sweet shops between them. It is 30 minutes from Ueda on the Bessho Line.

How do I get from Tokyo to Bessho Onsen?

Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen (Hakutaka or Asama) from Tokyo to Ueda, about 1h 30m and ¥6,900 reserved (¥6,370 unreserved). Change to the Ueda Electric Railway Bessho Line for Bessho-Onsen Station: about 30 minutes, ¥590, roughly every 30 minutes. Door to door is about 2h 15m to 2h 30m.

How much do the public baths in Bessho Onsen cost?

Ōyu, Ishiyu and Daishiyu are ¥300 each for adults and ¥100 for children. Ōyu and Ishiyu open 6:30 to 21:30 and Daishiyu 6:00 to 21:00. Ishiyu is closed on Tuesdays, Ōyu on Wednesdays and Daishiyu on Thursdays. Two foot baths, Nanakuri and Ōyu Yakushi-no-yu, are free.

Can I visit Bessho Onsen as a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes, as a long day. Allow about 2h 15m each way, which leaves 4 to 5 hours: the Bessho Line out, Kitamuki Kannon, Jōraku-ji, Anraku-ji and one bath. Add Ueda Castle on the way back and it is a full day. One night in a ryokan is much easier and lets you bathe at 6:00 or 6:30.

What is Ueda famous for?

Ueda is the castle town of the Sanada family. Sanada Masayuki built Ueda Castle in 1583, and his forces held it against Tokugawa armies in 1585 and 1600. The castle park, the Yanagimachi old post-town street and the Bessho Line to the hot springs are the usual visit.

Which temple in Bessho Onsen is a National Treasure?

Anraku-ji, for its three-storey octagonal pagoda from the end of the Kamakura period, the only octagonal wooden pagoda in Japan. Entry is ¥300; it is open 8:00 to 17:00 from March to October and 8:00 to 16:00 from November to February, and about a 15-minute walk from the station.
