Tobira Onsen Myōjinkan扉温泉 明神館

The stay we would build a Nagano trip around, and one we have made ourselves. Stand chest-deep in Setsugekka, the open-sided standing bath over the ravine, with nothing in front of you but trees. Then choose dinner: Nature French cooked from the inn's own farm and the valley's vegetables, or seasonal Shinshū Japanese. Most rooms have their own onsen bath, and the free shuttle from Matsumoto Station means you don't need a car.

Iriyamabe valley, 35–45 min above Matsumoto

Tobira Onsen is a single-inn hot spring (一軒宿) at the head of the Susuki River, inside the Yatsugatake-Chūshin Kōgen Quasi-National Park, with the Utsukushigahara plateau above. The name comes from the Ama-no-Iwato myth: local tradition says the rock door the god Tajikarao flung from the heavens landed in these hills. The lords of Matsumoto Castle came up here to hunt with hawks and rest in the water.

A Relais & Châteaux member since 2008, the first Green Key certified property in Japan (2009), and in the 2026 MICHELIN hotel selection it moved up from "Selected" to One MICHELIN Key, one of 17 new One Key hotels in Japan that year. The Key is for the stay; the restaurants hold no MICHELIN star.

Tobira Farm, a few minutes down the valley

The inn grows its own low-pesticide vegetables at Tobira Farm, including the heritage Matsumoto Ippon-negi leek grown here since the Edo period, and composts the kitchen scraps back onto the fields. Both restaurants cook from it: about 80 traditional Shinshū vegetables pass through the Japanese kitchen alone.

Three baths, kept deliberately cool

An alkaline simple spring, served at 38–40 °C so you can stay in longer. Each bath has separate men's and women's sides.

There is no day bathing for non-guests. Most rooms have their own bath of the same onsen water, and the Natura treatment room (10:00–23:00) uses it too. If you're only passing, the public Hinoki no Yu day bath is 5 minutes' walk away (¥400).

A taxi from Matsumoto takes about 30 minutes and costs roughly ¥7,000. The JR Pass covers the Shinkansen, the Shinano and the Azusa. The Hokuriku Arch Pass covers the Shinkansen to Nagano and Nagano–Matsumoto on local trains; whether it covers the Shinano limited express isn't stated, so check at a JR ticket office. Arch Pass holders should come via Nagano, as Shinjuku–Matsumoto is outside the pass.

How do I get to Tobira Onsen Myōjinkan from Matsumoto Station?

Free hotel shuttle, booked in advance, from the East (Castle) Exit at 15:15 or 16:30; the ride takes 35–45 minutes. Returns leave the hotel at 9:30 and 11:00. A taxi takes about 30 minutes and costs roughly ¥7,000.

Can I get there from the Hokuriku Shinkansen?

Yes. Take the Shinkansen to Nagano (1h 20m from Tokyo), the Limited Express Shinano to Matsumoto (55 minutes), then the hotel shuttle. The JR Pass covers both trains. The Hokuriku Arch Pass covers Nagano–Matsumoto on local trains; check at a JR ticket office whether it covers the Shinano.

Does Myōjinkan have a MICHELIN star?

No. It has One MICHELIN Key (2026), MICHELIN's award for hotels. Its restaurants do not hold a MICHELIN star.

What is the standing bath?

Setsugekka (立ち湯「雪月花」) is a deep onsen pool you stand in up to your chest, open on the ravine side to the forest. There are separate men's and women's pools, open 24 hours except 12:30–13:30. The water is an alkaline simple spring kept at 38–40 °C.

Can I visit the baths without staying?

No, Myōjinkan does not offer day bathing. Hinoki no Yu, a public day bath about 5 minutes' walk away, costs ¥400.

French or Japanese dinner?

You choose one when you book; seats are first come, first served. Nature French Sai cooks macrobiotic-influenced French food from local vegetables; Shinshū Dining TOBIRA serves seasonal Japanese food built on fermentation and dashi. All meals are in the restaurants, not in your room.

How much does Myōjinkan cost?

About ¥66,000–¥206,000 per person per night with dinner and breakfast, two sharing, tax included, depending on room and season. Add the bathing tax and ¥200 Matsumoto accommodation tax per person per night.

Are children allowed?

Yes, with no age limit, in Japanese-style rooms. Seiryū-an and the Otaka wing's Western rooms are adults only. Pre-school children eat at the Japanese restaurant.
