Four kinds of stay, one short region

Itoigawa has four types of accommodation, each suited to a different kind of trip: station-area business hotels for convenience; onsen ryokan inland for a full traditional experience with kaiseki dinner and a proper soak; coastal hotels for Sea of Japan sunset views; and ski lodges near Charmant Hiuchi for winter sports.

Below, every property we’d actually book ourselves, sorted by category, with a “where to stay for X” decision table further down if you’d rather skip to the picks.

Sasakura Onsen Ryūun-sō笹倉温泉 龍雲荘

5804 Ohira, Itoigawa-shi · 20 min by car from station

The single most highly-rated ryokan in Itoigawa, and the one locals quietly recommend. Ryūun-sō sits in the hills about 20 minutes inland, centred around a natural sodium-bicarbonate hot spring, a “cleansing bath” said to gently soften skin. The kaiseki cuisine uses local mountain vegetables, Sea of Japan seafood, and Niigata rice. Large windows face the mountains; the atmosphere is calm and refined.

Things worth knowing

Four practical points that save first-time visitors money or stress.

  1. 01
Book ahead in peak seasons. Ski season (Dec–Mar), cherry blossom week (late April), Golden Week (early May), and crab season (Oct–Dec) all see rooms sell out weeks or months in advance.
  2. 02
Day-use onsen. Most ryokan allow non-guests to use their baths during the day for ¥800–¥1,500, a great option if you can’t justify an overnight.
  3. 03
Car rental at the station. Toyota Rent-a-Car and Nippon Rent-a-Car both have desks at Itoigawa Station (Alps Exit). Inland ryokan are easiest to reach by car. Compare rates on Rakuten Travel.
  4. 04
Business hotels are usually last-minute friendly except on major Japanese holidays, handy if you’re planning flexibly.
