Itoigawa Station · 糸魚川駅 10 min read
In brief

Itoigawa Station sits on the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Nagano and Toyama. Every Hakutaka service stops, most journeys mean you don’t even check a timetable, just turn up. The scenic JR Ōito Line continues south to Hakuba and Matsumoto, and a coastal local line runs east to Nou Port for crab.

The shape of the journey

Three Shinkansen services pass through: Hakutaka stops at every station including Itoigawa, Kagayaki is the fastest but skips most stops (a few do call here, check the timetable), and Tsurugi is a Toyama–Tsuruga shuttle useful for short hops within Hokuriku. All three use the same E7/W7 12-car trains with ordinary, Green Car, and Gran Class seating.

By rail

Three lines into Itoigawa

The Shinkansen handles long distance; two local lines handle the scenic routes and the coastal hops.

Hokuriku Shinkansen北陸新幹線

Hakutaka · Kagayaki · Tsurugi

Hakutaka is the workhorse, every Hakutaka stops at Itoigawa, ~2h 10m from Tokyo, running every 30–60 minutes. Kagayaki is faster but most skip Itoigawa; only a handful call each day. Tsurugi shuttles between Toyama and Tsuruga.

All three use E7/W7 12-car sets, ordinary, Green Car, and Gran Class. Reserved seats add ~¥500 over unreserved.

JR Ōito Line, to Hakuba & Matsumoto大糸線

Scenic local · 3–4 trains/day

One of Japan’s most scenic local journeys. Runs south from Itoigawa through the mountains of the old Salt Road (Shio no Michi), crossing into Nagano and continuing to Matsumoto, deep river valleys, small rural stations, eventual views of the Japanese Alps.

Schedules are sparse, often only 3–4 trains a day run the full Itoigawa–Minami-Otari section. Plan timings carefully.

Rail passes

Which pass to buy

Recommended

Hokuriku Arch Pass

¥35,000 / 7 days

Tokyo → Itoigawa → Kanazawa → Kyoto → Osaka, plus Itoigawa → Minami-Otari on the JR Ōito Line. Significantly cheaper than the nationwide JR Pass for this corridor.

JR Pass (nationwide)

From ¥50,000 / 7 days

Best value if you’re touring multiple regions of Japan beyond Hokuriku. Itoigawa is fully covered as a Shinkansen stop, and the JR Ōito Line is included.

JR East, Nagano & Niigata

¥27,000 / 5 days

Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Jōetsu-Myōkō / Itoigawa. Worth it if you’re not going west of Itoigawa and also using Joetsu Shinkansen or Tōhoku trains.

Practical tips

Before you book

Five practical things first-time visitors usually wish they’d known.

  1. 01
Reserve in peak seasons. Cherry blossoms, Golden Week, Obon, New Year, and long weekends fill fast. Use a Midori no Madoguchi counter or reserve online via JR-East/West.
  2. 02
Don’t skip the KiHa 52. The preserved diesel train inside Itoigawa Station is worth the 5-minute detour even in transit.
  3. 03
Ōito Line is sparse. Local trains to/from Minami-Otari run only 3–4 times a day, plan timings carefully.
  4. 04
JR East/West border. Itoigawa sits on the boundary between JR East and JR West. Pass coverage isn’t affected, but reserved-seat and Green Car rules follow whichever operates your specific train.
  5. 05
Winter delays. The Shinkansen is reliable even in heavy snow, but the local Ōito Line and Nihonkai-Hisui Line can experience delays or closures in severe weather.
