Distances and times are for the car alone, no traffic and no snow. Allow well over the figures in winter.

In brief

Collect the car at Nagano Station, see Zenkō-ji and sleep in Hakuba. Day 2 follows Route 148 down the Hime River to Itoigawa for jade, black yakisoba and the Oyashirazu cliffs, then the coast to Unazuki Onsen for a ryokan dinner. Day 3 is Uozu and Toyama Bay sushi, and the car goes back at Toyama Station. About 230 km and 3h 45m of driving, one way, with winter tyres from December.

Why drive it, and why in winter

The train does this trip in pieces. Nagano to Hakuba is an Alpico bus (about 1h 10m, ¥3,500 in winter). Hakuba to Itoigawa is the single-car Ōito Line with a change at Minami-Otari, 1h 30m to 2h 10m. A car follows the same valley but lets you stop where the trains do not, and it ends at the Shinkansen in Toyama with no backtracking. Hakuba is the winter anchor: ten ski resorts on one pass, and Route 148 is the old Salt Road down to the sea.

Each day here leads with the food and ends with the night's stay: oyaki in Nagano, black squid-ink noodles in Itoigawa, a gorge-side kaiseki at Unazuki and Toyama Bay sushi. Season and roads covers the winter driving, which is the real practical question on this route. A shorter two-day version starts at Itoigawa (see day 2), and the Hakuba guide and Itoigawa guide go deeper on either end.

Day 1 · about 48 km · 40 min at the wheel

Nagano to Hakuba over the Olympic road

Zenkō-ji善光寺

Nagano · 2 km, 5 min from Nagano Station · grounds free, open at any hour

A temple that belongs to no single school: Tendai and Jōdo priests run it together, and by tradition it was founded in 644. The main hall (1707) is a National Treasure. The grounds cost nothing; the inner sanctuary and the Okaidan, a pitch-dark corridor under the altar, take a ¥800 ticket (¥1,500 for the set with the Sanmon gate, the sutra library and the museum). From December to February the inner sanctuary closes at 16:00.

Allow 1h 30m to 2h with the Okaidan and the Sanmon. Parking is in coin car parks around the gate (fees not checked). The Zenkō-ji guide has the dawn service and the ticket detail.

Oyaki and soba on Nakamise-dōri仲見世通り・おやき・そば

Lunch · the approach to Zenkō-ji · Nishinomon Yoshinoya brewery tour 8:30–17:00

Nakamise-dōri, the stone lane from the Niōmon to the Sanmon, is lined with soba shops, oyaki stalls and souvenirs. Oyaki are Nagano's stuffed dumplings, sold hot, so eat one on the walk and sit down for soba. Yawataya Isogorō sells shichimi spice at the gate, and Nishinomon Yoshinoya, a sake and miso brewer beside the Daihongan since 1637, runs a free tour and tasting. The driver should skip the tasting.

Happō village and Happō Onsen八方・八方温泉

Hakuba · Happō Bus Terminal · walk to the gondola and to dinner

Happō-One has 1,071 m of vertical, an 8 km longest run and the 1998 Olympic downhill; 2026–27 is the last winter for the old gondola. Goryu opens on 21 November, the high resorts in early December, Cortina and Norikura on 12 December and Iwatake on 18 December, so before those dates this is a village, a bath and a view of the range. Happō Onsen water is a simple spring at pH 11.2–11.3 and about 50°C, and several inns here bathe in it.

Dinner: Happō and Echoland restaurants book out in peak weeks and many small ones take cash only, so carry yen. The Clubhouse next to The Happo serves coffee from 07:00, lunch and a sports bar in the evening. A ski day is the natural extra day: the Hakuba Valley day pass is ¥11,100 for all 10 resorts, and a Happō-One day ticket is ¥9,800. The Hakuba ski guide has the rest.

More Hakuba choices. Hakuba Tokyu is closed from 16 November to 11 December 2026, so pick another before then (see Where to stay). Route 148, the Salt Road国道148号・塩の道

Hakuba to Michi-no-Eki Otari · 21 km, 18 min · then 25 km to Itoigawa

Route 148 runs 69.9 km from Ōmachi to Itoigawa and is also called the Salt Road (塩の道). Below Hakuba it follows the Hime River north through Otari and over the prefectural line. It is a single road, so weekends jam and any closure stops everything. The JR Ōito Line and a JR West bus share the valley, and the bus runs daily from 1 December to 31 March (not 28 to 31 December), a sign that the valley is kept open in winter.

Michi-no-Eki Otari (小谷) at Kita-Otari is the break halfway. Season and roads covers snow, closures and what to do if the road is shut. The Hakuba access guide has the train and bus timetable for the same valley.

Fossa Magna Museumフォッサマグナミュージアム

Itoigawa · Miyama Park · about 10 min by car from the station · ¥700, check

Itoigawa was Japan's first UNESCO Global Geopark (2009), on the seam where eastern and western Japan meet. Six exhibition zones cover the jade pulled from nearby gorges, the geology of the Fossa Magna and fossils including the ammonite Nipponites, with English signs. It opens at 9:00 (last entry 16:30) and takes 60 to 90 minutes.

Winter: from December to February it closes on Mondays (and the day after a holiday), and from 28 December to 4 January. Our geopark guide gives ¥700; other listings give ¥500 to ¥700, so check at the door. The inland geosites, Kotakigawa Jade Gorge and Fossa Magna Park, are shut for the winter, so this is the geopark stop. The geopark guide has the rest.

Black yakisoba at Getsutoku Hanten月徳飯店・糸魚川ブラック焼きそば

Lunch · 2-5-18 Ōmachi, Itoigawa · a few minutes' walk from the station · about ¥900 a plate

Itoigawa Black Yakisoba is noodles dyed with squid ink, topped with an omelette and finished with a ketchup-mayo lattice. It was invented in the early 2010s at Getsutoku Hanten 月徳飯店, a Chinese restaurant run by its third-generation owner, and this is the original. A plate is about ¥900 and the gyoza are ¥100; in winter look for the monkfish chow mein.

It gets very busy at lunch, so be there at 11:00 or after 13:30. Phone or check the closed day the day before. Park by the station and walk.

Hisui Kaigan, the Jade Coastヒスイ海岸

Itoigawa · 5 min from the station · free · allow 30–60 min

A 4 km pebble beach where stones from the inland jadeite deposits wash down the river and out to sea. Collecting pebbles is allowed on the coast, which makes it one of the few places where you can legally take real jade home. The beach is at its best after stormy weather, when fresh stones are turned over; stay well back from the water in rough seas.

Damp stones show their colour far better than dry ones, so bring a small waterproof bag and rinse in the shallows. The Fossa Magna Museum identifies dry, clean stones under 15 cm on set weekend dates (lottery ticket at 9:00). The Jade Coast guide has the details.

Oyashirazu cliffs and Pier Park親不知ピアパーク

Itoigawa · Oyashirazu · free · set lunch about ¥1,500

Beyond the park, 15 km of sea cliffs once formed Japan's most feared coastal road: Oyashirazu-Kōshirazu means "not knowing your parents, not knowing your children", because Edo-period travellers crossed at low tide and lost family to the waves. Pier Park is a roadside stop at the foot of the cliffs, with a restaurant that has panoramic sea views and fresh seafood set lunches around ¥1,500.

It is an exceptional sunset spot, but in December and January the light fades around 16:30, so stop by 15:00 and keep driving. Winter sea can be violent here: watch the waves from the car park, not the rocks.

Unazuki Onsen in winter宇奈月温泉

Kurobe · mouth of the Kurobe Gorge · free outdoor footbath by the station

Every ryokan in town draws the same weakly alkaline spring from the Kuronagi source up the gorge, so the baths are gentle and many look over the Kurobe River. A kaiseki dinner here blends Toyama Bay seafood (buri in winter, shiroebi) with Kurobe mountain vegetables, river trout and a masuzushi starter.

The Kurobe Gorge Railway runs the full line to 30 November, makes a short run on 1 to 6 December, then closes for the winter, so December to April is a night for the baths and the dinner, not the trolley. There are winter tours on set days between 10 January and 28 February (see the Kurobe guide). Many inns and shops close on irregular days in winter, so check before you go; the tourist desk at Yumedokoro Unazuki is on 0765-62-1515.

Pick up and drop off

Collecting the car at Nagano Station

Book winter tyres with the car. Hire companies in Hokuriku know the season, but a car on summer tyres should not leave the lot in the snow months.

Where to collect

Toyota Rent a Car, Nissan Rent a Car and Times Car Rental are listed at or near Nagano Station. The Klook search below compares what is free for your dates. Returning the car at Toyama Station puts you on the Shinkansen without a transfer.

One-way, Nagano to Toyama: usually possible, with a drop-off fee because the car crosses prefecture lines. Ask at booking; the figure changes by company and season.

Ask for these

  • Studless winter tyres and, for two-wheel drive, chains. Hakuba needs them from December; some companies fit winter tyres as standard from mid December, others charge extra.
  • An ETC card. The Hokuriku Expressway between Oyashirazu and Unazuki charges a toll; Route 8 along the coast does not.
  • English satnav with a phone-number search; the inn and restaurant numbers are above.

Licence

Taiwan: your licence plus an official Japanese translation (JAF issues them in Japan). Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium and Monaco follow the same rule.

Everyone else: an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, valid for one year from entry, plus your passport. Hong Kong and mainland China licences are not covered here: ask the hire company before you book.

Parking

Zenkō-ji uses coin car parks around the gate. The Uozu Buried Forest Museum has free parking for 100 cars. Ask each inn about parking and snow clearing when you book; Kai Toyama has no car park, so return the car first.

Season and roads

Snow tyres, Route 148 and short days

This is the snowiest of the road trips on this site, because the first night is in Hakuba and the second day follows a mountain valley. Six things to know before you book.

  1. 01
Winter tyres, and chains in the boot. Hire companies warn that a car without winter tyres can be refused in snowy areas under prefectural rules, and the Hakuba valley is one of them. Where expressways enforce chain restrictions, cars without chains cannot pass and NEXCO says winter tyres alone are not enough. Ask for studless tyres on all four wheels and chains for the drive wheels.
  2. 02
Route 148 is one road. It follows the Hime River for about 70 km and has no alternative. Heavy snowfall closed the section from the Iwatake junction to the Niigata border in January 2023, and Niigata prefecture's list of restricted sections near Itoigawa includes stretches of Route 148 for rockfall, landslide and avalanche. Check road information the evening before and the morning of day 2: JARTIC, the Nagano Ōmachi construction office and the Niigata Itoigawa regional office all post it.
  3. 03
If Route 148 is shut. Do not try the long way round. Return the car at Nagano and take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama (about 1h), then collect another car there. The Toyama Bay by car page covers the Toyama end of this trip, including Uozu and Unazuki Onsen, from Toyama Station.
  4. 04
Short days. The light fades around 16:30 to 17:00 in December and January. Do the long drives in the morning, be at Unazuki by 16:30 for the bath before dinner, and keep Oyashirazu for early afternoon.
  5. 05
Hakuba dates. Goryu opens on 21 November, the high resorts in early December, Cortina and Norikura on 12 December and Iwatake on 18 December. Hakuba Tokyu is closed from 16 November to 11 December 2026 and Courtyard from 16 to 20 November. Snow can be thin in early December: January and February are the safer months for skiing.
  6. 06
Gorge railway and closed days. The Kurobe Gorge Railway closes for the winter, so do not plan the trolley. The Fossa Magna Museum closes on Mondays from December to February, the Uozu Buried Forest Museum on Thursdays from 15 December, and the Uozu Aquarium on Mondays from 1 December to 15 March. Many Unazuki inns and shops close on irregular days.

FAQ

Driving questions, answered

Can I drive from Hakuba to Itoigawa in winter?

Usually yes. Route 148 follows the Hime River for about 70 km and a JR West bus uses the valley daily from 1 December to 31 March, but heavy snow has closed sections, as in January 2023, and rockfall and avalanche restrictions apply near Itoigawa. Fit studless tyres, carry chains and check road information the evening before and the morning of the drive.

Do I need snow tyres for Nagano, Hakuba and Toyama?

Yes, from December. Hire companies can refuse to rent a car without winter tyres to snowy areas, and where expressways enforce chain restrictions, cars without chains cannot pass and winter tyres alone are not enough. Ask for studless tyres and chains when you book; some companies fit winter tyres as standard from mid December and others charge extra.

How long does it take to drive from Nagano to Toyama on this route?

About 230 km and 3h 45m of driving over three days: roughly 48 km on day 1, 130 km on day 2 and 54 km on day 3. The times come from a routing engine with no traffic and no snow, so allow well over them in winter.

Is the Kurobe Gorge Railway running on this trip?

Not in winter. The full line runs to 30 November, makes a short run on 1 to 6 December, then closes for the winter and reopens in spring (20 April in 2026). From 10 January to 28 February 2027 there are tours on set weekend days; see the Kurobe guide. Unazuki Onsen itself stays open all winter.

Can I drop the car in Toyama if I collect it in Nagano?

Yes, as a one-way hire. Dropping a car in a different prefecture carries a fee that the booking page shows, so ask when you reserve; the figure changes by company and season.

Can I drive in Japan with a Taiwan licence?

Yes, with an official Japanese translation of the licence (JAF issues them in Japan). Licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium and Monaco follow the same rule. Visitors from other countries need an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, valid for one year from entry.
