In brief

Collect the car at Toyama Station, walk Iwase's merchant street, watch the red snow crab auction and eat at Kittokito Market in Shinminato, then see the Tateyama range from Amaharashi and sleep in Himi for kan-buri, the winter yellowtail. Day 2 is the Himi port, Banya-gai and Takaoka, then back to the station. About 87 km and 1h 55m of driving.

Why drive it, and why in winter

Every stop here has a train: the Port Line to Iwase, the tram to Shinminato, the JR Himi Line to Amaharashi and Himi. They are three different lines with long gaps between trains, so a day that takes in all of them is a car day. Add the order that the food runs in (an auction at 12:30, a kan-buri dinner, a port breakfast at 6:30) and the car stops being a convenience.

Winter is when Toyama Bay eats best. Kan-buri, the fat winter yellowtail, is fattest in December and January; red snow crab is on sale from September to about mid May; and on a clear cold morning the 3,000 m Tateyama range stands over the sea at Amaharashi. The coast is flat and ploughed, with none of the mountain-road risk of the Shirakawa-go trip. Plan day 1 for a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday: the crab auction does not run on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Iwase: the Kitamae-bune street岩瀬・北前船の廻船問屋街

7.8 km, 13 min from Toyama Station · allow 1 hour

Iwase was the port that sent rice and sake north and brought kelp home on the Kitamae-bune merchant ships, and the shipping agents' street still stands: long narrow plots, deep eaves, storehouses behind. Walking it takes 20–30 minutes. Baba House 旧馬場家住宅 costs ¥100 (9:00–17:00, last entry 16:30, cash only), and the Mori house is closed for earthquake repairs until at least fiscal 2027.

Saseki 沙石, the standing bar of the Masuizumi brewery, opens at 10:00 and closes on Tuesdays; a glass is ¥200–500. The driver should not taste (see Snow and roads), but a bottle of Masuizumi is a good thing to carry home. The lanes are narrow, so leave the car in a car park and walk. More in the Iwase guide.

The midday crab auction昼セリ見学

Kittokito Market, Shinminato · register 11:00–12:00, auction 12:30 · closed Wed and Sun

Shinminato holds a rare midday auction of red snow crab (beni-zuwai, sold locally as 高志の紅ガニ), and visitors watch from a gallery on the second floor. It costs ¥100; you book by phone, in Japanese, on 0766-84-1233 (ask your hotel or the hire desk to call), check in at the desk with the 昼セリ banner between 11:00 and 12:00, and the auction starts at 12:30 and lasts 5 to 20 minutes. No flash, no loud voices: these are real buyers. Viewing runs to about mid May 2027; it does not run on Wednesdays, Sundays or over New Year, nor in bad weather. The market posts at about 9:30 each morning whether it is on.

Before registering, walk next door to Kaiwo Maru Park. The four-masted sailing ship 海王丸 is in hull maintenance from 28 October to 14 November 2026, so it cannot be boarded until it reopens (boarding is ¥500 otherwise, closed Wednesdays), but the park is free and so is the walkway on the Shinminato Bridge beside it. Details in the Shinminato guide.

Lunch at Kittokito Market新湊きっときと市場

Lunch · 1 Kaiō-chō, Imizu · open daily 9:00–17:00 · parking for 470 cars

The harbour hall is a row of fishmongers and counters. The bowl to order is the Kōhaku-don 紅白丼, half red-crab meat and half shiroebi (white shrimp) sashimi, ¥3,800. The fishmonger Uoshin 魚新 sells boiled crab and, on auction days, serves it freshly boiled from about 13:30. White shrimp is landed from April to November, so in deep winter ask what the shrimp in your bowl are.

Hours vary by shop and the whole hall closes only on 1–3 January. For a cheaper plate there is the dockside canteen Kitokito Shokudo, from 07:30 and closed Wednesdays (ebi-ebi tendon about ¥1,600).

Amaharashi coast雨晴海岸

Amaharashi Station and Michi-no-Eki Amaharashi · free · be there by 15:30 in December

Across 60 km of bay, the snow-covered Tateyama range rises out of the sea behind Onnaiwa Rock, a pine-topped islet, and legend says the name 雨晴 (rain-clearing) comes from Minamoto no Yoshitsune sheltering from rain under a rock on this beach. The classic picture is sunrise on a clear December–February day, with the most snow on the mountains; the afternoon trip gives you the low light and the Onnaiwa silhouette near sunset. The light goes by about 16:30.

The small station has an observation deck and a live webcam, and the roadside station Michi-no-Eki Amaharashi has a seafood café and a picture window on the same view, a warm place to wait if the wind is up. Our Himi and Amaharashi guide has the rest.

Breakfast at the Himi port魚市場食堂

Breakfast · Uoichiba Shokudo, second floor of the fish-market building · from 06:30

Uoichiba Shokudo 魚市場食堂 is the port canteen of an old fish wholesaler: about 84 seats, fish landed that day, and a lunch menu that starts at 06:30. Reviewers name the Himi hama-don, a bowl of the morning's fish; in winter order buri, simmered with radish as buri-daikon.

The listed hours are 06:30–15:00 on weekdays and 06:30–15:30 at weekends, closed 1–3 January, from an undated listing, and the opening days may follow the port's market calendar, so check before you drive over. Ask for 氷見漁港 魚市場 if you take a taxi.

Unazuki Onsen in winter宇奈月温泉

Hot-spring town · the Kurobe Gorge railway is shut from 1 December to late April

The gorge railway closes for winter (1 December to 20 April in 2026), so this is a night for the baths and the dinner, not the trolley. A ryokan kaiseki blends Toyama Bay seafood, buri in winter, with Kurobe mountain vegetables and Kurobe River trout. The town has a free outdoor footbath by the station and a small beginner ski area, Unazuki Snow Park, a five-minute walk from the station (it opened on 5 January last season).

Winter tyres matter more up the valley than on the coast; confirm they are fitted before you leave Toyama. More in the Unazuki guide and the Kurobe guide.

Pick up and drop off

Collecting the car at Toyama Station

Book ahead for weekends in December and January, and tell the desk you are staying on the coast.

Where to collect

Hire companies listed near Toyama Station include Toyota Rent a Car, Nippon Rent A Car, Times Car Rental, Orix and Nissan. The Klook search below compares what is available for your dates.

Return: the trip ends where it began. Within Toyama Prefecture a one-way drop is usually free, but ask when you book; a drop at Kanazawa carries a fee that the booking page shows.

Ask for these

  • Winter tyres. Some hire companies fit them as standard from mid December to the third week of March; others charge extra. Ask for the dates.
  • English satnav with a phone-number or map-code search; the auction desk and the ryokan both have phone numbers.
  • An ETC card only if you plan to use an expressway; none is part of this trip.

Licence

Taiwan: your licence plus an official Japanese translation (JAF issues them in Japan). Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium and Monaco follow the same rule.

Everyone else: an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, valid for one year from entry, plus your passport. Hong Kong and mainland China licences are not covered here: ask the hire company before you book.

Tolls and parking

The legs are short local-road drives and no toll road is planned. Kittokito Market has parking for 470 cars, and the JAL City hotel charges ¥1,500 a night for its 18 spaces, so reserve one. We have no figures for the other car parks: ask your inn about its own.

Snow and roads

Driving here in winter

Snow falls from December to March, less on the coast than in the valleys. Six things to know before you go.

  1. 01
The coast is the easy part of Toyama in winter. This trip stays on the flat plain beside the bay. Snow falls from December to March and the main roads are ploughed, but you should still expect an icy morning or two, and slow, short days. Skip the Unazuki leg if a heavy-snow warning is out.
  2. 02
Winter tyres. Hire companies in Hokuriku know the season. Some fit winter tyres as standard from mid December to the third week of March; others charge extra or ask you to request them. Do not take a car on summer tyres in the snow months.
  3. 03
Short days. The light fades around 16:30 in December and January. Do Amaharashi by 15:30 on day 1 and be at the inn before dark.
  4. 04
The driver does not drink. Japan treats drink-driving very strictly, and a passenger who hands the driver a drink is also liable. The Masuizumi bar in Iwase, the sake at dinner and Unazuki's local beer are for the passengers; the driver can buy a bottle to take home.
  5. 05
Shape the week around the auction. The Shinminato crab auction does not run on Wednesdays and Sundays, and the sailing ship and the canal boat also close on Wednesdays. Day 1 works Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. The ship is in maintenance until 14 November 2026.
  6. 06
Check the mountains before you commit to a morning. The Tateyama view needs a clear cold morning, and cloud over the range is common. The webcam at Amaharashi Station shows the view live; look the night before and at 6:30, and swap the sunrise for a lie-in if it is grey.

FAQ

Driving questions, answered

When is the best time to drive Toyama Bay for food?

Late November to February. Himi's winter yellowtail (kan-buri, 寒ぶり) runs about November to February and is fattest in December and January, and Shinminato's red snow crab is in season from September to about mid May. The coast stays open all winter, and clear cold mornings give the best view of the Tateyama range from Amaharashi.

When does the Himi kan-buri season start in 2026?

The city announces the start of the season each year; in 2024 the announcement was made on 21 November. Expect late November and check the Himi tourism pages. Ryokan dinners for late December and early January sell out first.

Can I watch the Shinminato red crab auction?

Yes, on days it runs. It costs ¥100, you must book by phone in Japanese on 0766-84-1233 (ask your hotel to call), and you check in between 11:00 and 12:00 for the 12:30 auction. It does not run on Wednesdays, Sundays or over New Year, nor in bad weather. Viewing runs to about mid May 2027.

How far is the drive, and how long does it take?

About 87 km and 1h 55m of driving over two days, without stops: 45 km on day 1 and 41 km on day 2. The optional third day to Uozu and Unazuki Onsen adds about 53 km and 1 hour, and the drive back to Toyama Station another 52 km.

Can I return the car somewhere other than Toyama Station?

One-way hire within Toyama Prefecture usually carries no drop-off fee, but ask when you book, since it varies by company and season. A drop in another prefecture, such as Kanazawa, carries a fee that the booking page shows.

Can I drive in Japan with a Taiwan licence?

Yes, with an official Japanese translation of the licence (JAF issues them in Japan). Licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium and Monaco follow the same rule. Visitors from other countries need an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, valid for one year from entry.

Can I see the Tateyama mountains from Amaharashi in winter?

Yes, on clear cold mornings from December to February, when the snow cover on the range is at its deepest. Check the live webcam at Amaharashi Station before you drive out, because cloud over the mountains is common in winter.
